I can’t believe Giacomo’s gotten the one thing in the whole UNIVERSE he shouldn't have. Man, it’s going to be a disaster.
Everyone in our friend group had already realized that Marco had a crush on Giacomo way before he actually told us. I haven’t known him for a long time, but it was pretty clear, to be honest…
I saw the same things that made Giacomo figure out the whole stuff. I just would’ve never thought that he could actually do it. Giacomo really sucks at understanding even the most basic things - I mean, one time it took an entire HOUR to teach him a stupid game where one person asks you a question and you have to answer as if you were the person to your right. Imagine if he was capable of realizing that somebody was in love with him!
Well, this time he fucked as all. I hope so bad that he believed me when I told him he was imagining it all this morning.
He’s definitely not able to manage such a complex thing. It’s not about intelligence - maybe just a bit… - but maturity. He would literally destroy Marco without even noticing it. Marco doesn’t deserve it. Everything came so unexpectedly and I don’t even know what to do. I mean, should I warn him? Should I tell him that Giacomo asked me that?
Maybe I should talk to Sophie first, since she knows him better than me. Sophie is my girlfriend and she’s known Marco since she was, like, five years old. She’s also much smarter than me so she’s going to suggest to me the right thing to do, I’m sure. I’m calling her anyway since we barely spoke on the phone today.
I call her around 4 pm and she answers after a few rings.
“Hey.”
I like her voice even through the phone.
“Hey. You okay?”
“I’m desperately trying to choose what I’m wearing this evening. I'll let you imagine my mood.”
We both laugh. She keeps telling me that she has nothing to wear while her wardrobe is literally exploding.
“I miss you” I say. I kind of didn’t want to say it but words get off my mouth so naturally when I talk to Sophie.
“Tom, we met yesterday.”
“Yeah, but I’m used to seeing you, like, every day. Can we meet tomorrow?”
I feel that she’s smiling even if I don’t see her.
“Sure.”
Sophie is not, you know, that kind of person who shows her affection clearly, especially when we’re not alone. I like this. It makes me feel so special when she dedicates one of her rare moments of tenderness to me.
“I also wanted to tell you something” I say after a few seconds.
“Oh, did something happen?”
“Well, it did, actually. You can’t imagine it.”
“What? You finally told your mom that you’re engaged?”
“New year. I promise.”
“Mh. We’ll see. So, what happened? Something bad?”
“Erm, yes? I mean, not bad for us. It’s not even bad, it’s…”
“Tom, TELL ME.”
“O-okay. Giacomo asked me if Marco has a crush on him.”
Little pause. She must be surprised just like me when Giacomo asked me that question.
“No. No. No. Please, tell me you’re joking…”
“You wish. I met Giacomo, Mattia, Pietro and Nathan this morning. We had a quick soccer match and then Giacomo came to me and asked me with such a funeral face…”
“And what did you tell him?!”
“I denied. I told him that he’s clearly not his type and stuff like that. He told me that, you know, it would be weird for him.”
“How selfish. It would be hard for Marco. The thing doesn’t affect Giacomo at all. Did he even look like he was worried about him?”
“Not… not really much. He was like ‘oh, good, I can act normally’ when I told him he was wrong. I said he should be acting as usual in both cases, since we’re talking about Marco. You know.”
“Yeah, got it. Another heartbreak and we’re going to lose him.”
“How tragic!”
“You know that, Marco’s the most sensitive human in the whole universe. He acts like everything’s okay but we’ve been with him when he broke up with that jerk. And we’ve been there when he had… those moments, you get it? He must forget Giacomo immediately.”
She told me about that period of Marco’s life. Still can’t believe how people can be so uncaring. I understand that she’s afraid it might happen again, but unfortunately it’s not that easy to get someone out of your head - especially when you’re actually friends.
“What can we do then? Tell him? Do you think it could help?”
She takes a few seconds to reflect.
“It’s better for him to know it. If he knows that Giacomo has a suspicion, he’ll be more careful. I mean, he literally sucks at hiding that he fancies him. Do not tell him today anyway, he needs some rest. I will tell him.” she says.
“Got it. Still can’t imagine how he actually figured it out.”
“SAME. We underrated him, apparently. Keep me informed if there’s any news. See you tomorrow.”
“Sure. Can’t wait for it!”
