Adult Swim is the most rebellious cable channel of all time. Yeah, if you're 7 or something. First debuting on September 2 of 2001, Adult Swim has been a favorite of tired parents since its first episode of Home Movies. The infamous sign-off bump, played after Cartoon Network shuts down for the night, has scared children and adults alike. Most of the people who watched AS, whether at 8 or 18, know the sound that sent shivers down all of Gen Z's backs... But what are those sounds? Well, these are the sounds! From the Creepypasta Wiki:
THE SOUND OF THE DAWN "Resonating metal, followed by a rumble, followed by scraping metal, and other rumbles. End bumper".
Now, from how tame it sounded, you may wonder why it is no longer used, and why it was so traumatizing. Well, this is why. If you time how long it takes to get to the actual AS channel, you would know it only runs for 9 seconds. Since it ends at that point, many thought that was where the audio ended. But no, it ran for way longer than that. And now, onto why it was removed.
THE DAWN IS GONE Usually, a CN employee would enter the control room left by an AS crewmember and take over for the day. But one day, this wasn't so. I couldn't find the date of when this happened, but I'll just refer to it as The Day. So again, you're probably wondering what the hell happened for TDIYE to be removed, right? Well, the reason why is the usual CN guy who was supposed to come in and turn off the bumper, for some reason, did not start the day schedule. And so, no one turned off the bump, and the full horror of the bump was able to be heard by everyone who was up at that time, adults and children alike. And this is what they heard...
"The metal continued to resonate, and the scraping continued. Slowly, an uncontrollable sobbing came clearer. Not one person was crying, but a multitude of people were screaming and yelling. As the metal scraped, the screaming grew louder. Soon, you could hear the slicing of flesh, the grinding of bones, the gushing of blood, and the guttural death rattles of people dying.".
Now you know why it was removed. I can't even imagine how horrific that must have been for the people who heard it. I mean, imagine being a sleeping child and waking up to what sounds like a barbaric massacre! Millions of people around the world were phoning Cartoon Network, begging for it to be turned off. So, when I tell you that it was reinstated, you must be wondering: How the fish sticks was this still on AS after this? Well, it's simple! They changed the bumper.
A NEW DAWN I couldn't find anything saying how exactly they changed it, but I do know that instead of saying Enemy, it said Frenemy. And before it was played, a black screen was shown, and in white text, there was a message that said; "We've been trying to be more positive lately.". So, yes! It was reinstated a few years after, and "The Dawn Is Your Frenemy" has been on the air ever since. But, there are two more questions that many have asked about this... One, how did Cartoon Network cover this up? There are many theories, but the most popular (and likely) one is they just refused to discuss it, and the dumbest one is they did subliminal hypnosis for the viewers over the next few weeks so they would forget. The second one is; Where the hell did they get such horrific audio? Well, that question has yet to be answered, both by AS and CN.
I had a dumb idea for a bumper the other day... A pretty lady comes on screen, saying "Oh, hey! Are your parents in the room?", because kids try to stay up watching it. Then she goes on about secrets your parents never told you, like Santa and The Tooth Fairy aren't real, and then she is still talking, but she trails off, and the audio gets progressively lower, until when they turn the volume up a bunch, she says really loudly, 'Did you catch all that?", so it wakes up the parents. But apparently, Monty Python has already done that! Beat me to it by like, fifty-four years...
