Maybe Someday by Nithan Sage
Chapter 7
Blue Diary
By the time I turned ten, I had figured Lizzy Annet out. So when she handed me the gift wrapped in pastel wrapping paper I already knew what was inside.
It couldn’t be a book. She hated the notion of reading. Which I didn’t know until I gifted her a copy of Emma for her birthday.
It had to be something in blue. It was her favorite color. Not the blue of the sky or the sea but the pale blue of her eyes.
It would definitely have some sea creatures. It was her recent obsession.
And something she liked.
A coloring book. She had gifted me a coloring book.
I eyed her as I removed the tape holding the wrapping together. She inched closer, looking as if she wasn’t the one who had given it to me. A mischievous little smile adorned her face.
With one more tug the paper came off.
“A diary?”
She smiled wide, and everyone could see the missing tooth in the front. “I made it! Open.”
Tentatively I opened the diary. The pages crinkled in touch. Colored in different shades of blue watercolor; it looked like the ocean with different sea creatures wearing a birthday hat on each page.
But it had only twelve pages.
“I will make you more pages next year so that you can write all your piano music here!”
