A Dance Of Shadow And Fate

A Touch of Gold - 2

A Touch of Gold - 2

Jul 15, 2023

The sound of footsteps broke their reverie as Jiang returned, knocking at the door. Meili snatched her hand back in chagrin as Zhiyuan called for the eunuch to enter. Flustered, she rose and busied herself pouring the prince a fresh pot of tea, struggling to still the butterflies now taking flight within at the awakening tenderness growing between them, one touch and glance at a time. The path was far but golden, worth persisting for until dawn's first breath and the night's long vigil gave way at last.

Night fell, cloaking the palace in shadow. Meili waited until all was silent before venturing from her own small chamber with the second dose of the golden elixir. Her heart pounded as she made her way to Zhiyuan's quarters, afraid of being caught but more fearful still of failing to administer this next draught on time. Their progress was too fragile to lapse now.

Rounding a corner, Meili collided with a figure in the darkness and stifled a cry of alarm. "Be at ease, it is only I," said a familiar voice. Lin, Zhiyuan's maidservant, stepped into a pool of moonlight.

Meili breathed a sigh of relief upon recognizing the older girl. "Lin, you startled me. I did not expect to meet anyone at this hour." She studied the maidservant, struck again by her mysterious air and the sense of secrets behind her wry smile.

Lin inclined her head. "Nor I you. What calls you to His Highness' chambers so late?"

"I...have simply come to check on his wellbeing and see to any final needs before retiring myself," Meili stammered, clutching the elixir flask behind her back.

Lin nodded, seeming unsurprised. "Of course. Our prince is fortunate in your... devotion." Her knowing look caused Meili to blush, as if her hidden heart and purpose had been laid bare. "It appears your service gives you joy, so I shall not keep you from him any longer." The maidservant drifted past without another word, disappearing down the darkened corridor like a wraith.

Meili stared after Lin in consternation, shaken by the encounter. She had thought the girl an ally but now wondered at her motives and how much she suspected. Resolving to be warier around Zhiyuan's cryptic maidservant, Meili hurried on to his chamber before losing more time.

Slipping inside, she found Zhiyuan asleep on the bed, his chest rising and falling with each breath. Her heart swelled at seeing him so at peace, the lines of pain and worry erased from his features. She stood watching him for a moment, caught in the beauty of simply beholding him unawares.

Remembering herself, Meili uncorked the flask and measured out a dose of the golden elixir. Gently rousing Zhiyuan, she brought it to his lips. "Drink, my prince," she whispered. "Your healing journey continues."

Zhiyuan complied without question, drowsy eyes locking with hers. Meili's breath caught at the warmth and trust she glimpsed within their amber depths. Her quest's purpose and path had never seemed so clear as in this unguarded moment, walking through the valley of shadows toward the dawn.

Zhiyuan finished the draught and sank back onto the cushions with a sigh. "Stay..." he murmured, already slipping into slumber once more. Heart swelling, Meili sat at his bedside in silent watch until the pale light of morning filtered through the curtains, keeping her patient company through the hours of night. The darkness held no fear, her guiding light led on. And his tender plea echoed still, a sweet refrain: Stay...

Morning sun filtered through the gauzy curtains, rousing Meili from where she had drifted to sleep at Zhiyuan's bedside. She blinked awake in chagrin, stiff from spending the night in a chair. Her patient still slumbered, lips curved in a shadow of a smile as if pleasant dreams held him in their thrall.

Meili's heart swelled at seeing Zhiyuan so unguarded and at peace. This was how she wished him to be always - carefree, unburdened, his light shining through. Her quest to heal him seemed more urgent and necessary than ever in this tender moment. She whispered a prayer to any who might hear: let him be spared further darkness or despair.

A sound in the outer chamber caught Meili's attention. She rose, wincing at the creaks in her bones, and went to investigate. To her surprise, she found Lin and two other servants preparing Zhiyuan's morning meal. The mysterious maidservant glanced up at Meili's entrance, eyes betraying nothing of their strange encounter the previous night.

"You have risen early to attend His Highness today," Lin remarked. The other servants glanced between them, sensing an undercurrent but saying nothing.

Meili nodded cautiously. "There were... matters requiring my attention through the night. I wished to ensure all was in order upon his waking."

Lin's gaze sharpened, seeing through to the hidden truth: Meili's secret ministrations and silent vigil keeping darkness at bay. Yet the maidservant's expression remained inscrutable. She turned away, directing the other servants to their tasks without another word.

Puzzled and uneasy, Meili returned to Zhiyuan's chamber. His eyes fluttered open at the sound of her approach, gaze focusing on her with a dreamy smile. "You stayed," he murmured, echoing his tender plea from the night before.

Meili flushed under the warmth of his regard. "I did, my prince. I am here always, your faithful servant." Her playful choice of address brought a glint of humor to his eyes. How she delighted in each glimpse of his returning light.

Zhiyuan sat up with a yawn, running a hand through sleep-mussed hair. Meili turned away, suddenly shy in the intimate familiarity of sharing these morning moments. Her role was as his healer, not allowing such untoward fondness to slip in.

"Come, walk with me," Zhiyuan said, recovering himself. At her questioning look, he added, "My restless limbs grow tired of this chamber. A turn around the courtyard would do me good. Will you join me, or has your devotion come to an end now that your patient rises cheerfully?" His teasing tone brought a smile to her lips.

"I shall walk with you, my prince, as far and as long as you desire," Meili replied playfully. Zhiyuan's eyes gleamed with pleasure at her ready acceptance of his mood. Her heart swelled to see him thus, each trace of shadow fleeing before the sun. The dawn had come at last, her guiding light led on.

Meili walked with Zhiyuan in the palace gardens, thrilled to see him stepping eagerly forward instead of the slow, labored gait of days past. He paused before a flowering bush, studying it with intent. To her surprise, he held out a hand and summoned a blossom into his palm using qi magic, petals glowing gold with energy.

Meili gasped. After years bereft of his gifts, Zhiyuan had called upon his powers once more. Her quest to heal him was succeeding beyond all hope.

Hearing her shock, Zhiyuan turned with a grin of triumph. But upon seeing the tender joy and pride in her eyes, his smile softened into something more intimate. Meili's breath caught at the warmth of his gaze, her heart fluttering within its cage.

The sound of wailing broke their reverie as Eunuch Jiang came barreling up the path. "Your Highness, I have heard the most welcome news - you have recovered your qi at last!" Spotting the flower still glowing in Zhiyuan's hand, the eunuch dissolved into noisy tears of delight.

Zhiyuan sighed at the interruption, closing his hand to extinguish the blossom's light. "Yes, Jiang, it appears your incessant badgering and herbal concoctions have had some effect in restoring my diminished qi." His dry tone brought a laugh to Meili's lips. "Now cease your intolerable weeping before you wake the entire palace!"

Jiang hurried to muffle his sobs behind voluminous sleeves. "Forgive me, Your Highness. I am overcome to see you thus, it has been so many years...but I shall not disturb you further." Still sniffling, the eunuch tottered off down another path.

"Heaven help me, the price of my gift's return will be enduring that fool's theatrics from now on," Zhiyuan muttered, though his eyes twinkled with humor. Meili laughed again, the sound sweet music to his ears. How he had missed provoking such delight in another.

Their mirth was cut short by a shriek nearby. Lady Xia came rushing towards them, Liang chasing after. "Your Highness, did I just see...was that magic you performed?" Lady Xia gasped. Her maidservant stared in awe, forgotten sweets tumbling from her gaping mouth.

Zhiyuan sighed again at having his recovery discovered by yet another interloper. Meili glimpsed a flash of impatience in his eyes at Lady Xia's overeager concern and felt an unexpected pang. She chided herself for such untoward possessiveness over one not meant to be hers. Her role was to heal him, not claim him.

"Yes, Lady Xia, my powers appear to have returned at last," Zhiyuan replied. "Do excuse us, we were just taking some air." Not waiting for a response, he grasped Meili's hand and led her off down another garden path without a backward glance.

Meili walked at his side in a daze, acutely aware of her hand still enveloped in his firm grip. Zhiyuan glanced down at her, eyes bright with humor and something more tender that caused her breath to catch anew in her chest. This was no longer the path of one guiding light alone but two, together finding their way through shadow into joy's sweet dawn. The night's long vigil was ending; the golden day begun.
