Zhiyuan sighed as his mother prattled on enthusiastically about his plans to attend the upcoming summer festival. "You must demonstrate your returned powers for all to see, especially the Empress Li and the Crown Prince! Even though your gift remains developing compared to those attending the Imperial Academy, your recovery will be seen as a miracle and sure to elevate your status..."
Consort Ruolan seemed not to notice Zhiyuan's lack of excitement at being put on display. He had promised her he would make an appearance at the summer festival to please her, back when his health permitted little else. But now with strength restored, being paraded about to vie for position and favor held no appeal. His powers returning was miracle enough without turning it into a political display.
"Mother, must we discuss this now?" Zhiyuan interjected wearily. "I have only just recovered myself. Allow me to regain my strength before petitioning me to entertain the entire court."
Consort Ruolan looked crestfallen at his lack of enthusiasm. "But my son, this opportunity will not come again! You have been from view too long. To show yourself in full health and with powers restored will change everything - no longer will you be seen as the forgotten son of a lowly concubine. You could gain the Empress' notice, even the Crown Prince's favor!"
"I have no desire to vie for position or compete with those vain peacocks attending the Academy," Zhiyuan said bluntly. "Their mastery of qi means little; it is how one uses power that matters, not a display of skill for skill's sake."
Consort Ruolan sighed in exasperation at her son's stubborn refusal to seize a chance at advancement for once. But upon seeing the weary set of his shoulders, her heart softened. She grasped his hands tenderly.
"My dearest son, for so long you have been lost to me, and I only just found you again. I will ask no more of you now, save that you continue regaining your health and strength. We have time enough ahead for all else."
Zhiyuan looked at his mother in gratitude, bringing her hands to his lips for a kiss. Her love and faith in him were more than he deserved, and he cherished them all the more for their rareness.
"Thank you, Mother. I promise we will have time enough for all else and more. But for now, simply having you near is blessing enough."
Consort Ruolan embraced her son fiercely, overjoyed at hearing affection in his tone for the first time in what seemed an age. Zhiyuan returned her embrace without hesitation, and for a tender moment, all was right again in her little corner of the world. The long-awaited dawn had broken at last, restoring what the shadows had long concealed: her son, her heart, her home.
Meili arrived to find Zhiyuan embracing his mother, Consort Ruolan, and breathed a sigh of relief that her disappearance that morning had caused no ill effect. But upon hearing Consort Ruolan mention engagements, her relief turned to dismay.
"Now that you are restored to health, we must consider your future and who might make a suitable wife," Consort Ruolan was saying enthusiastically. "Lady Xia has shown you great devotion these past years. And her family's status is noble enough to elevate your own, were you to choose her..."
Zhiyuan grimaced, extracting himself from his mother's embrace. "Must we speak of this now? I have only just turned seventeen, there is time enough for such matters later."
Consort Ruolan looked up, noticing Meili's arrival with a smile. "Ah, here is the girl to whom I owe your recovery! Meili, I cannot thank you enough for the service you have provided my son. Were it not for your skills, I fear I never would have found him whole again."
Meili bowed hastily. "You exaggerate my abilities, Your Highness. I am just a servant."
"Nonsense, your wisdom and care far surpass your years and station," Consort Ruolan insisted warmly. Turning back to Zhiyuan, she added, "At least promise me you will consider Lady Xia's merits before dismissing the thought of marriage entirely. I see the way she dotes on you, and such devotion deserves rewarding."
Zhiyuan sighed, giving his mother a pleading look. "I will consider whatever you ask, if only we may speak of it another time. For now, I wish to rest from discussions of duty and devote a day to peace."
Consort Ruolan conceded, sympathy softening her gaze. She had pushed enough for today. Patting her son's cheek, she said, "Very well, I shall leave you to your rest and attend to other matters. We have much to speak of in the days to come...but all else can wait for now." With a smile and wave to Meili, the Consort swept from the room in a rustle of silk.
Silence fell between Meili and Zhiyuan, broken only by a faint sigh from them both. So much had passed since morning, so many revelations to absorb. Yet still the path remained obscured, its end and purpose veiled save for the tender yearning growing within with each glance and touch, a mystery guiding them both step by step into the golden dawn.
Meili took a breath before speaking, anxious at revealing the truth at last. "Your Highness, tonight I shall administer the final dose of the elixir provided for your treatment. Once taken, you will be restored to full health and strength."
Zhiyuan studied her intently. "So you have claimed before, yet still you evade telling me of this mysterious cure's origins. I would know the truth now - where did you come to acquire an elixir with such power after all else failed?"
Meili hesitated before plunging ahead. "The elixir formula was provided specifically to heal you, Your Highness. Just after my arrival, I discovered that for the past several years, you did not suffer from normal illness but rather the effect of a potent poison administered over time in small doses to keep its effects subtle. The elixir was the only antidote, meant to purge you of its foul influence entirely."
Zhiyuan stared at her in shock and growing anger. "Poison? You claim I was being poisoned all these years, and yet chose to hide this until now?"
"I feared revealing the truth too soon would place your recovery at risk. My role has been only to heal you, not determine how such shadow came to fall in the first place," Meili said anxiously.
"Not determine how—?" Zhiyuan began hotly before breaking off with an exasperated sigh. He turned away from her, gripping the windowsill. "Leave me. I shall summon you again when ready to receive this final dose and be rid of your presence."
Meili stood frozen for a moment, dismayed at his dismissal. She had feared anger but not resistance to accepting the elixir at last. "Your Highness, we have come too far for you to turn from health now. Tonight I shall return, and you will take the final draught to fulfill my quest's purpose as promised."
He did not acknowledge her firm pronouncement. Meili sighed and bowed before retreating from the room, door closing behind her with an ominous sense of finality. Her revelation had been too much for him to absorb so soon, yet time was running short. The shadow's hold was breaking, but until the last chains fell away, its remnants might still find a way to regain their grasp. She must not fail, no matter his refusal. Her quest's end lay within their reach; all that remained was for Zhiyuan to take the final step into dawn's sweet light.
Meili made her way to the hollow tree in the palace gardens, hoping to find guidance on her quest's next steps. To her relief, a letter from the Grand Master awaited her within. She unrolled the scroll with haste, reading:
Little Flower,
The shadows poison afflicting your charge will soon be banished, thanks to your courage and care. But other perils await in the aftermath, and your quest is not yet finished. Imperial courts are dens of vipers, and you must help the prince navigate their coils to have any hope of gaining the throne.
Attend him at the Imperial Academy to aid his mastery of both qi and political skill. Monitor the threats around him, ever watchful for those who would do him harm. Your training as a Guardian shall serve you well in the battles to come, which will be many. But have faith - when the cause is just, light always overcomes the dark.
The crown prince's position is tenuous, and several hope to claim his title for their own. You must make the prince their equal and more, showing his worth and gifts deserving of the throne. This will not be an easy path, but you were chosen because you have the strength and heart to prevail against all shadows.
Stay vigilant, Little Flower, and let your light guide the way. Victory shall be hard-won but bring a golden dawn.
We stand with you as always in this fight.
Grand Master.
Meili released a breath, heart lifting at this message of hope and purpose to see her through the difficult days ahead. The Grand Master was right - her quest was far from over, and the battles to come at court and Academy would require all her wits and training to navigate. But with secret allies there to aid her cause, and Zhiyuan himself restored to take his rightful place, she need not walk alone.
