The crown prince's throne was precarious, set upon by rivals and evildoers seeking its claim as their own. Meili must ensure Zhiyuan became every bit their match and more, proving his gifts and worth deserved that highest seat of power. Her light would guide him up from the shadows' grasp into his destined glory, no matter the peril. The dawn's sweet victory was hard-won but drew ever closer, a golden sun ascending in her heart.
Still puzzled by Lin's continued absence, Meili sought out Eunuch Jiang to inquire about the maidservant's whereabouts. To her surprise, the eunuch informed her that Lin had left the palace that very morning.
"Left the palace? But why, and without notice?" Meili asked in dismay.
Eunuch Jiang shrugged his plump shoulders. "I know not the reason, only that she requested and was granted leave from her duties here. Perhaps the girl grew homesick or found a promising match. Servants come and go often."
Meili frowned, disturbed by this news. For Lin to disappear so abruptly after years attending Zhiyuan seemed strange. But with no cause to suspect the maidservant of ill intent or wrongdoing, she could not give voice to her misgivings.
Rounding a corner, Meili came upon Lady Xia walking with her maidservant, Liang, in the palace gardens. At seeing Meili, Lady Xia brightened and sent Liang off before approaching her eagerly.
"Meili, I am glad to have met you. I have been so anxious for news of His Highness since visiting yesterday. How does he fare today? Has his strength continued to improve?" Lady Xia questioned, kind eyes full of concern.
Meili was touched by the girl's genuine care and worry for Zhiyuan's wellbeing. Lady Xia had shown him devoted attention these many years despite his vexing moods and poor health. Her heart went out to this lonely soul who so longed for affection but had fixed her hopes upon one who might never return her tender feelings in kind.
"His Highness is recovering apace and seemed in good spirits this morning," Meili replied gently. "Your treats and attentions have been a boon during his convalescence."
Lady Xia brightened at hearing this small praise. "I am glad to provide whatever solace and comfort I may. Please tell His Highness I hope his health continues to improve, and convey my well wishes for his happiness always." With a smile and bow, she took her leave, trailed by the ever-attentive Liang.
Meili watched the pair go, heart swelling with pity for Lady Xia's plight. The girl deserved a love that would receive her sweet devotion in kind and make it the center of a golden world. Yet still she lingered, loyal to a heart that might never turn her way. The costs of caring for one who could not care for another equally were high, a loving heart left exposed and fragile walking such an uncertain path.
Zhiyuan seemed not to see the treasure before him in this gentle soul. Meili resolved at that moment to make him do so before it was too late, to open his eyes to one who could prove a guiding light on his own journey out of shadow into dawn. Her quest was his healing in full, of body, heart, and spirit. And healing the spirit meant learning to love where love took root.
Unable to visit Prince Zhiyuan after their argument, Meili wandered the palace halls restlessly. She knew she should give him space until his temper cooled, but staying away felt unbearable. Lost in troubled thoughts, she collided abruptly with another girl, sending them both tumbling.
"A thousand pardons!" Meili exclaimed, mortified at her clumsiness. She scrambled to help the girl up, noting her fine silk robes and jade hairpin - signs of nobility. This must be one of the princesses, she realized with dread. Meili braced for a tempest of rebukes.
Instead, the girl burst into laughter. "No need for apologies," she said, eyes dancing. "I was lost in my own little world too, I'm afraid." She smiled, brushing off her robes. "I don't believe we've met. I am Mei'er, 19th princess of the imperial court. And you are...?"
Meili hesitated, uncertain whether to reveal her true identity. But the princess' friendly demeanor drew her instinctively to honesty. "I am called Meili. I...attend upon Prince Zhiyuan, Your Highness."
Princess Mei'er's smile broadened knowingly. "Ah, so you must be the one I've heard whispers of, who healed my dear half-brother of his strange affliction." Her eyes glinted with curiosity. "What magic did you work to cure a malady that has plagued him for years?"
Meili flushed, realizing her role was not as secret as she had hoped. "I employed an elixir of special herbs and remedies, Your Highness. Nothing more."
The princess considered her for a moment, as if deciding whether or not to believe this dubious claim. But her expression softened again into a smile. "Please, call me Mei'er. Any friend of my brother is a friend of mine." She leaned closer, lowering her voice conspiratorially. "To be honest, I worry for Zhiyuan and am relieved to know he has you looking after him. Court life can be...perilous. I wish we had more time together, but I am kept busy with lessons."
Meili saw a glimmer of longing and wisdom in Mei'er's eyes beyond her years. Her heart warmed to this kindred spirit who also cared for Zhiyuan's wellbeing. "I would be honored to call you friend, Mei'er. And I promise to do all I can to guide and protect Prince Zhiyuan."
Mei'er's smile held a hint of mischief. "In that case, I look forward to getting to know you better, Meili. I have a feeling the two of us will get into a fair bit of trouble together." Her laughter trailed behind her as she headed down the corridor, leaving Meili with renewed purpose and an unexpected new friend.
As night fell, Meili returned hesitantly to Zhiyuan's chambers. Their earlier argument still lingered awkwardly between them, but she had to give him the final dose of the elixir to complete his healing.
Zhiyuan looked up in surprise at her entrance. "Meili...I did not expect you to come." He frowned, appearing uncertain of what else to say.
Meili bowed her head. "I have brought your final treatment, my prince. Please, may we put our disagreement behind us so I can finish what I came here to do?"
Zhiyuan studied her for a long moment, then nodded. "You may approach."
Meili came forward and administered the last of the golden elixir. An uneasy silence followed as it took effect. At last, Zhiyuan met her gaze. "You should have told me the truth sooner about my condition. But I was a fool to lose my temper. You have saved my life, and for that you have my gratitude."
Warmth blossomed in Meili's chest at his words. "I only wish for your health and happiness, my prince. There are still dangers lurking, and I hope you will allow me to continue guiding you."
Zhiyuan gave a dry laugh. "At this point, I do not think I could stop you, even if I wished it. You are too stubborn by half, Meili." But his tone held admiration rather than annoyance.
Meili could not help teasing, "A trait we seem to share, my lord." Her heart lifted to see his answering smile. The awkwardness between them was fading.
They began to speak of the sinister forces that could have poisoned Zhiyuan for so long and who might wish him dead. Rival princes? Corrupt ministers? Meili insisted they would discover the truth. Zhiyuan's color had returned, his eyes bright with life once more. On an impulse, he used his qi to make a flower blossom and dance through the air.
Meili laughed in delight. "Your gift has come back stronger than ever!" Zhiyuan grinned, sending more flowers floating around them.
One brushed Meili's cheek, and on instinct, Zhiyuan reached out to tuck her hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered, stroking her skin. Meili's breath caught at his touch, her heart racing.
Zhiyuan's gaze turned tender. "Meili, I..."
But hurried footsteps sounded outside. They moved apart as Eunuch Jiang entered, bowing excitedly. "Your Highness, forgive my intrusion! Your honored mother the Consort sends word she will visit shortly. She wishes to discuss your return to court."
Zhiyuan nodded, smiling at the eunuch's enthusiasm. As Jiang left to prepare for Consort Ruolan's arrival, Zhiyuan turned back to Meili. He took her hand, studying the slender fingers that had worked such magic to save him.
"It seems we must continue this discussion another time. But thank you, again, Meili...for healing me in more ways than one." He gently pressed her hand to his lips before releasing her.
Meili floated from his presence in a happy daze, her heart full. The awkwardness was gone, replaced by a tender bond she felt down to her soul. Her quest was nearly finished, but she knew now without doubt - she would not be leaving Zhiyuan's side. Their journey together into light and life was only just beginning.
