The morning sun shone brightly through the open windows of Prince Zhiyuan's chambers, heralding the start of a new day filled with promise. For the first time in over six years, Zhiyuan awoke without the shadowy veil of illness and fatigue clouding his spirit. His powers and vitality had returned thanks to Meili's timely healing, and the world seemed alive with possibilities awaiting him.
A swift knock at the door startled Zhiyuan from his musings. He bid the visitor enter, and in strode the imperial physician, Cheng, with a look of utter bewilderment upon his face.
"Your Highness, is it true?" Cheng gasped. "Has your health been fully restored? I heard reports you have recovered your qi magic as well. How is this possible?"
Meili shot Zhiyuan a meaningful look from across the room, and he understood her silent urging. He must continue the ruse a while longer.
"It is true, physician Cheng," Zhiyuan replied with a gracious nod. "Thanks to your devoted treatments and tonics over the years, the shadowy malady that afflicted me has finally been purged. I awoke yesterday healed and whole once more. You have my deepest thanks for your service."
Cheng's eyes widened further at this pronouncement. "But your Highness, I did not treat you yesterday. How did this miracle come to pass?"
"The will of heaven works in strange ways," Zhiyuan said mysteriously. Meili had to stifle a snort at his exaggerated sageliness. "I have no explanation beyond divine providence for this sudden restoration of health and power."
"You have been in my care for over half a decade, and yet you heal in but one day? There are forces at work here I do not comprehend." Cheng shook his head, his pride visibly stung by the realization his tonics had likely been ineffectual at best. But greed swiftly overcame any injury to his vanity.
"Well, your highness, as your condition seems much improved, I shall take this as a sign my services are no longer required," Cheng said with an oily smile. "You have made an old physician very happy in succeeding at long last to heal you. I take my leave." He exited with a bow, retreating from this defeat while likely hoping for rewards still.
Meili burst into giggles as soon as Cheng departed, and Zhiyuan swiftly followed suit, the pair collapsing into laughter together without restraint.
"The look upon his face when you told him you were healed!" Meili gasped, wiping tears of mirth from her eyes. "All his years of useless tonics and treatments amounted to nothing. I fear we have ruined the poor man's reputation!"
"His greed and ineptitude were no secret," Zhiyuan replied. "Thanks to you, I will not require his bumbling services again. You have given me back health and freedom both, Meili. Whatever comes, I face the future unfettered and standing by your side."
Meili's smile softened, joy and affection mingling behind her eyes as she gazed at Zhiyuan. The tasks and trials ahead paled for the moment as a new day dawned around them, brilliant with promise of a shared path they would now walk together into light.
Meili's expression turned serious once more. "Your Highness, you must keep the source of your healing a secret - do not speak of the golden elixir to anyone. If asked, say only that you were treated with herbal remedies. There are those who would seek to discover how your powers were restored for their own gain."
Zhiyuan nodded gravely. "You have my silence. I will attribute my recovery to your skill with medicinal herbs alone."
"Good. Now, your Highness, we must discuss your path ahead. You have many half-brothers, including Crown Prince Yong and others still at the Imperial Academy. But with your gift, with some training at the Academy, you could outshine them all and reclaim your position as the emperor's 'Golden Prince'. Perhaps even contend for the crown prince title, if you prove yourself worthy."
Zhiyuan scowled, anger flashing in his eyes at Meili's audacity in speaking so frankly of such lofty ambitions. "You go too far, Meili! I have no designs on power or position. I wish only to live freely and be left in peace."
Meili met his ire with a calm, steady gaze. "Peace may not be yours for the taking, your highness. Like it or not, you were born to a throne and a crown, and there are those who would see you claim your birthright - or else move against you as a threat. You cannot ignore destiny because you wish it so."
"You speak of destiny, but you know nothing of what I have endured!" Zhiyuan erupted, pent-up anguish and resentment pouring out in a torrent. "Six years lost in shadow, cut off from all I held dear while poison ate away my life and power. Now freed, you would have me walk back into the viper's pit with open eyes?"
Meili stood silent, waiting for his anger to spend itself while her heart ached at the pain and betrayal behind his outburst. At last, Zhiyuan spoke again, his tone quiet but laced with determination.
"I will not be a pawn in political games or vie for a throne I care not to claim. Let Yong have his crown and welcome to it. I wish only to live and learn in peace. The emperor cares naught for me, as I for him, and I owe the empire no debt or duty."
Meili sighed, seeing the futility of arguing with his stance today. She had planted a seed; it must be given time to take root and grow. "As you wish, your highness. I only hope those who move in shadow grant you the peace you seek."
Her ominous warning delivered, Meili took her leave. Zhiyuan gazed after her, torn between anger at her presumption and the understanding that as always, her wisdom rang with truth. The path ahead loomed treacherous, peace hanging by a fragile thread. Resigned, he steeled himself to walk it carrying little more than hope that for today, at least, the storm would hold off a while longer.
A little bit later, Meili made her way through the opulent halls of the imperial palace with a sense of foreboding. She had been summoned by decree of Empress Li herself, who wished to "thank her" for restoring Prince Zhiyuan to health. But Meili suspected thanks were not the only reason behind this sudden interest in her humble self.
Upon entering the empress' chambers, Meili bowed low with hands folded. "Your imperial majesty. How may I serve?'
Empress Li waved a bejeweled hand, bidding Meili rise. "At ease, child. I merely wished to express my gratitude for your role in nursing my dear Zhiyuan back to health. I have heard of your skill with herbal remedies and healing arts. Tell me, from where did you attain such knowledge?'
Meili's discomfort grew under the empress' piercing gaze and subtle interrogation. But she kept her tone light, hoping to escape this encounter unscathed.
"Your praise is too generous, empress. I was orphaned as a child and raised by Buddhist nuns, who taught me the healing properties of plants and herbs. I employ only simple remedies and cures to relieve symptoms of illness and restore balance. Prince Zhiyuan's recovery was the will of heaven, not any great skill on my part."
Empress Li gave a silvery laugh. "So modest, and such an interesting tale! An orphan girl taught healing by nuns, now risen to serve in our great palace. The gods do weave intriguing destinies." Her eyes glinted with shrewd calculation that set Meili on edge.
"Zhiyuan was as my own son when he was small, before that shadow fell over him," Empress Li continued. "Such a bright, mischievous boy, always underfoot. Though we lost him for a time, thanks to you his light has returned. For that, child, I am grateful."
Meili bowed again to hide her frown, uncertain of the empress' sincerity or motives. Her fond reminiscence of Zhiyuan seemed at odds with her failure to visit him even once during his long illness. Whatever her game, Meili must step lightly to avoid becoming a pawn.
"Your praise is undeserved but appreciated, empress. I live to serve the imperial family and Imperial court."
Empress Li waved a dismissive hand once more. "You may go. But know your service to our house is noted, child, and will not be forgotten. We take care of our own."
Meili felt a chill at the veiled promise - or threat - in those parting words. She beat a hasty retreat from the empress' presence, disturbed by this encounter and fearing the political games afoot threatened to draw in all within their reach.
Though relieved to escape for now, Meili knew with grim certainty this audience was but the first of many storms on the horizon. The path ahead loomed treacherous indeed, and peace remained elusive as shadows gathered around the throne. Her quest had only just begun.
Meili returned to Prince Zhiyuan's chambers still distracted by her strange encounters, only to find him conversing with Lady Xia and Consort Ruolan, his gentle mother. Consort Ruolan greeted Meili with an affectionate smile.
"Meili, child, you have served our house well these past days in restoring my dear son to health. I insist you return home to your village for a few days of rest."
Meili stared in surprise, uncertain how to refuse without appearing rude or raising suspicion. Her clan estate was days from here, not some village. But she could hardly reveal the truth!
Seeing Meili's hesitation, Consort Ruolan pressed on. "Come now, child, do not be stubborn. Two days of leave will not diminish my son's care, and you deserve reward for your service. Please, accept this small kindness - unless there are no loved ones left to visit...?"
"No, your grace, I have kin yet living, I just did not wish to leave my duty," Meili replied hastily. A few days away might aid her quest, if she could slip off to consult her clan. "You honor me too greatly, but I accept your generous offer of leave."
Consort Ruolan clasped Meili's hands in delight. "Wonderful! You must send my thanks to the lady who recommended your skills. I have been so grateful to find a girl as gifted with healing as the rumors suggest."
Meili's smile froze in place. What lady? She hurriedly improvised a response, hoping her ignorance on the matter did not show.
"Your grace is too kind. I will convey your message to...that noblewoman upon my return home." Whatever ruse her clan had spun to install her here, she now owed them thanks for unwittingly providing an excuse to depart!
Taking leave of Zhiyuan and the others, Meili quit the palace to traverse the forest paths that would lead eventually to her true clan estate. Only when concealed by the wood did she breathe a sigh, releasing the laughter she had contained for Consort Ruolan's sake. What tale had they told to see her placed in the palace? It mattered not. After facing Zhiyuan's temper and the empress' sinister interest today, a chance to escape intrigues even briefly was most welcome.
Under moonlight filtering through the treetops, Meili ran with all haste. Two days would pass swiftly, but for now, the quest could wait. Home was calling her back, and she yearned for the comfort of her clan and restoration of spirit only to be found walking those familiar woodland trails that had always before seemed so tedious. Tonight they were her escape, and freedom sang in her veins for the joy of this brief homecoming. The palace and path ahead could be confronted soon enough. For this moment Meili had found her peace, fleeting yet no less sweet. The empire and all its shadowed threats seemed but a world away.
Meili raced through the forest, her heart pounding with exertion and no small amount of panic. How was she to reach her clan estate days from here within the two days of leave Consort Ruolan had granted? Her dilemma proved short-lived, however, as Meili sensed a presence dogging her steps, unfriendly eyes peering from the shadows. She was being followed.
Meili tensed, preparing to defend herself with qi as three assailants emerged from the trees, daggers glinting in the moonlight. She opened her mouth to demand what they wanted - but before a single word could be uttered, a familiar figure dropped down before her in a flash of crimson silk.
