Meili slept well into the afternoon after journeying all night on the spirit beasts with Bai Zhi. Her body ached from the long ride and battling the assassins in the forest. As she awoke in her old chambers at the Yun clan estate, memories of training there since childhood filled her with nostalgia.
Over a late lunch with her juniors, Meili regaled them with stories of life in the imperial palace tending to Prince Zhiyuan. Their eyes grew wide as she described the grandeur of the palace and the various secret passages she had discovered.
"Sister Meili, what is the Imperial Academy like?" asked one of her juniors. "Have you attended classes there yet?"
Meili shook her head. "I have not had the opportunity. My duty has been focused on healing and protecting the 8th Prince. But if he enters the academy, I will go along to continue guiding him."
Her juniors frowned, disappointed at her answer. "How could you not visit the Imperial Academy yet?" exclaimed a usually reticent young man. "It is a center of learning and rivalry among the princes. The Junior Martial Club alone would provide entertainment for days! Not to mention access to rare cultivation resources."
"Please do not be jealous," chided an elder clan member. "Meili has been fulfilling a great duty to the empire. There will be time enough for visiting the academy if Prince Zhiyuan does enter."
Meili nodded in agreement, swallowing a bite of steamed dumpling. "Do not worry, juniors. If I find a chance, I will be sure to visit the academy and participate in club matches on behalf of our clan. But my duty to guide the prince must come before all else."
Her juniors grinned, visions of Meili dueling rivals in dazzling qi magic displays filling their imaginations. Asking eagerly about life at court, they giggled at Meili's stories of eunuchs tripping over each other and concubines bickering over shoes. For a few hours, Meili enjoyed the levity of being among kin again before her quest continued.
Though reluctant to leave, Meili knew she must return to the palace soon. The Yun clan had entrusted her with a great duty, and the threat of the Heiye Sanren loomed ever closer. Still, in this place of comfort and childhood memory, Meili found solace and strength to continue on the path before her. The future of the empire remained uncertain, but for now she allowed herself to simply be at home.
After lunch, Meili and Bai Zhi went to their old training ground. "We have a long journey ahead, sister," said Bai Zhi. "We should practice our skills to stay sharp in case the Heiye Sanren attack."
Meili agreed. As children, she and Bai Zhi had often dueled at this spot, competing to best each other. Though now allies, their rivalry still simmered beneath the surface.
They began going through forms, channeling and guiding their qi. Meili focused her energy into her yanxian sword while Bai Zhi transformed her silk fan into a weapon, lashing out with blades of wind. As their practice intensified, their qi magic grew increasingly dramatic.
Meili swung her sword, unleashing an arc of flame that scorched the ground. Bai Zhi responded with a cyclone of water to quench the fire, creating a cloud of steam.
"Your fire magic has improved, but water still conquers flame," taunted Bai Zhi.
Meili glowered. "We shall see." She slammed her sword down, shaking the earth and toppling Bai Zhi off-balance. But Bai Zhi merely floated up on a gust of wind, hovering out of reach.
Their duel escalated, flashing between the elements. Icicles and lightning bolts collided, explosions of soil and stone erupting around them. The clan members around the training ground gazed in awe at the dangerous yet dazzling display.
Finally, their qi magic depleted, Meili and Bai Zhi descended, landing lightly in the ruins of the scorched and furrowed ground. They looked at the devastation around them and laughed, suddenly feeling again like mischievous children. Their duel had cleared the tension that always lingered when they met, allowing them to once more be dear friends with a bond deeper than rivalry.
"I see the 8th Prince has brought out new depths of flame in you, sister," said Bai Zhi, nudging Meili with her elbow suggestively.
Meili blushed. "Do not tease me so. My duty is to guide him to fulfill the prophecy, nothing more." Yet even as she said it, Meili felt a fluttering in her chest at the thought of Prince Zhiyuan, and she knew Bai Zhi sensed it.
Bai Zhi smiled knowingly. "We shall see, sister. Destiny and the affairs of the heart often entwine in unexpected ways."
Though Meili protested, she feared her friend's words might prove true. Her quest was to shape a ruler, yet her fondness for Prince Zhiyuan continued growing in a way beyond duty. She could only hope such feelings did not distract her from the path laid out by prophecy. For now, she chose to say no more, finding solace in the temporary respite of home as her quest loomed once again soon.
As evening fell, Bai Zhi approached Meili with a sly grin. "Sister, I have news. The Grand Master has ordered me to accompany you to the imperial palace."
Meili's eyes widened in surprise. "What? Why did he not tell me himself?"
Bai Zhi shrugged. "He thought I should be the one to inform you, to see your reaction." Her grin broadened as Meili frowned. Their Grand Master enjoyed orchestrating situations to provoke rivalry between his disciples.
Meili sighed. As much as she cared for Bai Zhi, the thought of her friend and rival interfering at the palace gave her a headache. Still, she had no choice but to accept the Grand Master's orders.
They walked through the village market, browsing wares and chatting with locals. Meili purchased combs, hairpins and silk to maintain her guise as a palace maid and personal physician to Prince Zhiyuan. Her thoughts drifted to the 8th Prince. Though she would see him again the day after tomorrow, it felt like far too long. She chided herself for such foolishness. Her purpose was to guide him, not pine for the moments they were apart!
Yet the more she denied her fondness for Prince Zhiyuan, the more it seemed to grow. His mischievous eyes had stirred something in her that no amount of logic could quell. But such feelings threatened the detached impartiality required of her quest. Meili could only hope keeping Bai Zhi close at the palace might help distract her from these traitorous thoughts of the prince that even now made her heart race.
"You seem distracted, sister," remarked Bai Zhi, breaking into Meili's reverie. "Are you that displeased with my accompanying you?" She pouted in an exaggerated fashion.
Meili laughed. "Of course not. I am merely tired after today's journey and duel. Your company will be most welcome at the palace." She hesitated before confiding in a hushed tone, "But I fear the eunuchs and consorts may not survive your sharp tongue when provoked!"
Bai Zhi grinned mischievously. "Then they had best be on their guard. And you as well, sister, lest your secrets be revealed before these feelings you deny prove impossible to ignore!"
Meili blushed, eyes widening. Bai Zhi's perception was far too keen for her liking. She could only imagine the chaos that might unfold with Bai Zhi present to witness her interactions with Prince Zhiyuan firsthand. The journey back to the palace promised to be even more perilous with her friend in tow, ready to expose whatever truths Meili was not yet prepared to admit.
That evening, Meili briefed Bai Zhi on the current situation. "Prince Zhiyuan's power grows daily, yet he shows little interest in political affairs or claiming his right as the prophesied ruler. We must find a way to convince him to vie for the Crown Prince's position, at least nominally, without revealing anything of the prophecy or us."
Bai Zhi nodded. "He need not strive outright to become crown prince, but must appear a viable candidate to threaten those currently in power and keep the throne within reach."
Meili agreed this was key. Still, she felt troubled at the thought of manipulating Prince Zhiyuan for their ends without his knowledge or consent. Were they not dooming him to a destiny he may not choose by shaping events to place him on the throne?
Bai Zhi saw her friend's hesitation and frowned. "You allow feelings to cloud your judgment, sister. We act to serve the greater good of the empire. There is no room for sentiment."
"I know," said Meili with a sigh. "Yet it is difficult when the course we guide him toward may lead to danger and sorrow."
"You speak as though you care for his happiness more than the fate of our kingdom." Bai Zhi's tone was stern. "The prophecy is clear. Prince Zhiyuan alone can lead our people from darkness. Your duty is to prepare him for that role, no matter the cost."
Meili bowed her head, chastened by the truth in Bai Zhi's words. Her purpose was not to shield Prince Zhiyuan from suffering but ensure he became able to bear the weight of destiny. Still, her heart ached at the thought of him struggling through the treacherous political arena with dangers unseen and powers beyond his current knowledge or control.
Bai Zhi's expression softened. "I understand your pity for him, sister. But you must not let emotion override what you know must be done. Guide the prince toward his rightful place, and have faith, he will rise to each challenge as it arrives. His actions may not always please you, but you serve the kingdom's interests above all else."
Meili took a deep breath and centered herself. Bai Zhi spoke the truth, however difficult it was to accept. She had pledged to fulfill her quest, no matter the sacrifice required. Prince Zhiyuan's destiny was not meant to be an easy one, and she could not protect him from every hardship to come. She could only continue preparing him in secret to become the leader his people so desperately needed.
Her path was not her own, but in service to something greater - the light prophesied that Prince Zhiyuan might bring to the empire. Meili knew whatever she must face to make that light a reality, she would find the strength to endure and continue guiding him toward a destiny only they were privy to. The empire's hope remained fragile, but through her, Prince Zhiyuan would be ready when fate revealed all.
