A Dance Of Shadow And Fate

The Threads That Bind - 2

The Threads That Bind - 2

Jul 21, 2023

The next day, Meili rosed early to observe her juniors training. Their youthful energy and enthusiasm reminded her of simpler times before destiny intervened. As she watched them practicing martial forms and channeling their qi, pride in her clan swelled within her.

The Yun clan was an ancient lineage of cultivators devoted to justice and protecting the empire. For generations, they had identified children with high spiritual potential and taken them in as disciples, raising and training them in secret at their secluded mountain estate outside the village.

Meili recalled first arriving at the estate as a young girl, amazed by the exotic plants and animals, the elder cultivators floating serenely in meditation. The vigorous training had been grueling, but she discovered a talent for qi magic and the sword. When the clan elders told her that they envision her destiny and that she would guide the one destined to defeat darkness, Meili accepted her quest without hesitation.

Now as she observed her juniors, Meili saw in them the same promise and determination to master the mystic arts. "One day, you too will accomplish great things," she told them. "Perhaps not a quest like mine, but in service to our clan and people. Develop your skills, follow the guidance of your elders, and remain vigilant against corruption."

The disciples clamored eagerly with questions about her quest. Meili smiled but said only it was too soon for them to know its details. They had much training yet before such knowledge would be entrusted to them.

When their lesson concluded, Meili walked with her juniors through the village and sprawling estate that had long been her only home. Disciples skilled in qi fusion had cultivated a harmony between nature and structure. Ancient trees towered over paths and gardens, their branches intertwining to form a living canopy. The healers' quarters were filled with fragrant herbs, and beast pens housed spirit creatures that would one day become mounts or familiars of those worthy of it.

Meili found solace in the timeless beauty and simplicity of the estates that had shaped her purpose. The outside world seemed a distant dream. She thought of Prince Zhiyuan and her duty to guide him through the treacherous maze of palace politics toward a destiny he did not yet comprehend. Though uncertain, she had faith in the wisdom of her clan and continued her own training to stay strong against the dark forces threatening all she held dear.

Someday, these devoted juniors following in her path might contribute to the light promised to come. But for now, they remained here, preparing, while she walked alone to stand by Prince Zhiyuan's side and continue the quest destiny bound them to see through until the end, no matter the sacrifice.

As evening fell, Bai Zhi hurried to find Meili. "Sister, we must leave for the palace now. The Grand Master has summoned us."

Meili frowned, wondering at the urgency. They went to the Grand Master, who wasted no time on pleasantries. "You believe Prince Zhiyuan was poisoned for six years under the care of Imperial Physician Cheng. Have you uncovered who might be behind such treachery?"

Meili hesitated. "I spoke with the Empress and found her manner strangely threatening. After I left the palace, assassins accosted me, though Bai Zhi helped me defeat them." She paused. "Could it be possible the Empress herself was involved?"

The Grand Master shook his head. "Unlikely. She has no motive to poison her stepson when her own son is already crown prince, whatever her other flaws." He stroked his beard thoughtfully. "More probable are those who stand to gain from Prince Zhiyuan's death or incapacitation. Crown Prince Yong, comes first to mind. Maybe ha wants to eliminate as many threats to his position as he can."

Bai Zhi looked startled. "You suspect Crown Prince Yong?"

"We cannot rule out any suspect in a plot that has spanned most of Prince Zhiyuan's life," said the Grand Master gravely. "Be on higher alert. Trust no one at the palace, speak carefully, and watch for further attempts on his life. His destiny is too important to fall to such cowardly treachery."

He turned to Bai Zhi. "No need for a spiritual beast. Your skills have progressed enough to journey by your own power. It won't be as fast but it will be more discreet and if you leave now, you will be there at dawn. Go swiftly and be vigilant." Bai Zhi bowed, accepting this sign of her progress with a mix of pride and nervousness.

The Grand Master regarded Meili. "Guide the 8th Prince as you have these past months. Make ready his body and spirit. His path is fraught with peril, but you must forge ahead without faltering. The prophecy depends on you."

Meili bowed low. "Yes, Grand Master. I will not fail in my duty."

They bid farewell to the estate under a sky shimmering with stars. Bai Zhi transported them upon the wind toward the palace to resume their clandestine roles - one a maid and healer, the other arriving soon to request a position. But their true purpose remained, guiding Prince Zhiyuan to fulfill a destiny greater than anyone suspecting his fragile mortality might dream.

Morning had just risen when Meili and Bai Zhi arrived outside the palace walls. Meili's thoughts were in turmoil, anxious at seeing Prince Zhiyuan again after their argument over contending for the crown prince title. She knew her duty but feared she had provoked his anger by insisting on a path he was reluctant to walk.

Bai Zhi saw her friend's distress and placed a comforting hand on her arm. "Do not worry, sister. The prince's anger will fade once he sees you again. Your quest is greater than a single disagreement."

Meili sighed. "I know. Yet I dread how he will receive me. His loneliness and bitterness run deep. Pushing him too hard could drive him further from the throne he is meant to claim."

"Have faith," said Bai Zhi. "You have already done much to heal his spirit. Keep following your heart, and he will come to see the wisdom in your guidance." She smiled playfully. "Besides, I suspect he finds your beauty and wit hard to refuse!"

Meili blushed at Bai Zhi's teasing implication. "Do not jest so. I am here as his protector and guide, nothing more." But her heart fluttered at the thought of Prince Zhiyuan's tender glances and touch. She feared her fondness for him was growing into something beyond her quest's demands.

Bai Zhi's laugh tinkled like chimes in the breeze. "We shall see, sister. For now, go to him. I have arrangements to make before I join you in his quarters without rousing suspicion." Her expression turned grave. "Be on your guard. The girl you told me about, Lin. Her disappearance troubles me, as does this urgency from the Grand Master. There are hidden dangers yet lurking."

Meili nodded, allowing her friend's warning to strengthen her resolve. She made her way into the palace as the first glow of sunrise peeked above the horizon. Her path was winding but clear - she must continue guiding Prince Zhiyuan's steps toward the throne, no matter the obstacles or her own tender feelings threatening to lead her astray. His destiny was her calling, and she would not fail.

Walking towards Zhiyuan's quarter, Meili found Eunuch Jiang bustling about with preparations for the summer festival. "The celebration is in around a week," he informed her brightly. "Prince Zhiyuan's powers have returned just in time for him to make a grand showing!"

Though Meili smiled at the eunuch's enthusiasm, her heart grew heavy. The festival and contending for political power were the furthest things from Prince Zhiyuan's desires. She feared pushing him into the viper's nest of the imperial court before he was ready. But time was running out if he was to claim the throne as prophesied.

Meili went to Prince Zhiyuan's chambers, finding him gazing pensively out the window. At her entrance, he turned, an unreadable expression flitting across his features. "You have returned," he said simply. "Did you visit with the Buddhist nuns who raised you?"

"Yes, Your Highness." Meili bowed her head, hating to deceive him but unable to reveal the truth.

"And what did you do in my absence?" she asked, eyeing him carefully. His tone and manner seemed detached, as though holding her at a distance. She wondered if he was still angry over their disagreement or merely being cautious with his heart.

Prince Zhiyuan shrugged. "Little of consequence. Lady Xia insisted on keeping me company, prattling endlessly as always." A flicker of annoyance crossed his face before he smoothed it away. But Meili glimpsed hints of amusement beneath his impatience he seemed reluctant to acknowledge.

An awkward silence fell between them, fraught with the unsaid. Meili sensed Prince Zhiyuan's eyes follow her as she moved about the chamber, a dangerous kind of awareness passing in the space of a heartbeat. Her own traitorous heart raced at his nearness and the memory of his tender touch. But she schooled herself with the reminder that she was here for a purpose beyond her own fragile feelings.

Meili cleared her throat, grasping for pragmatism. "Then all is in readiness for the festival, Your Highness?"

Prince Zhiyuan frowned, annoyance returning. "Must we revisit that troublesome topic again? I have no wish to be paraded about like some show pony." He sighed, softening as Meili waited patiently for him to continue. "Yet I suppose refusing my mother's pleas would only cause further sorrow. I will demonstrate my renewed 'gift' for the court's amusement if I must."

Meili smiled sadly, seeing the turmoil he sought to conceal. "Your mother cares only for your happiness and well-being, my prince. As do I."

Prince Zhiyuan gazed at her, a tender longing in his eyes that stole her breath away. But he simply nodded in acknowledgment of her words before turning to stare out the window once more.

Meili left him to his thoughts, her own mind a jumble of emotions. Her duty was clear, yet her heart threatened to entangle where it did not belong. Their journey was only beginning, but already fraught with subtle tension pulling her between purpose and a perilous passion. She could only continue guiding Prince Zhiyuan's steps forward and pray she did not lose her way. The road ahead remained long, the future uncertain, but at that moment, she chose to hope.
