He hit the call button after a few moments of hesitation and waited for a familiar voice to sound on the other line. Not even three rings later, they picked up.
“Onyx?”
“Day,” he sighed out. “What are you doing?”
“Oh, I was just studying for my AP exam,” Day answered. “Are you okay? Do you need something?”
“Is it bad if I just wanted to talk?” Onyx asked, his voice so faint it might as well have been a whisper. “Can I come over right now? I won’t bother you if you’re still studying.”
There was nothing but silence for a few moments before Day asked again, “is something wrong?”
“No, Day. I just want someone to talk to.”
“Your girlfriend—”
“I don’t want to talk with her right now. She’s been in a pissy mood ever since she learned I met you.”
“But you want to talk with me?”
“Never mind,” Onyx sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Fuck it. I’ll talk to you soon. Bye—”
“Wait!” Day called out before he could hang up. “Yeah… Yeah, you can come over. I was just surprised and, holy shit, Onyx, can you blame me?”
Onyx gave a half-hearted shrug. “I guess I can’t.”
“Do you need a ride?”
“Nah,” Onyx answered, throwing his bag over his shoulder and already beginning his walk there. “I’ll walk. I’m close enough.”
“It’s almost twelve o’clock at night—”
“I can handle myself. I’m not some fucking twelve-year-old girl so stop treating me like one.”
“Whatever. Just talk with me until you get here just in case.”
“Sure,” Onyx agreed if only because he could use the company on an otherwise lonely and admittedly disquieting walk. “Fine.”
For the next ten minutes, the two of them practically talked about nothing which Onyx hadn’t even known to be possible beforehand. They jumped from topic to topic that mostly consisted of random, pointless shit. They talked about television shows, some new game that was coming out, movies that would be playing that summer, and then, Day brought up a question that had Onyx a mixture of confused and intrigued.
“Do you ever think about the fact that no matter where you are in the world, everyone looks up at the same moon?”
“No,” Onyx scoffed. “I don’t tend to spend my time thinking up random shit like that.”
“But it’s cool, isn’t it? Everyone’s connected in their own way.”
“Sure,” he allowed, letting his eyes roam over the house that stunned him as much as it did the first time he’d seen it. “I’m outside. I don’t have to sneak in or some shit, right?”
“Not exactly.” Onyx heard movement on the other line. “My dad’s here though so you should probably be quiet. He’s serious about his sleep.”
He hummed in acknowledgment, hung up the phone, and waited patiently on the porch until the door swung open and Day revealed himself on the other side.
The raven-haired male sent him a smile. “Hey.”
Onyx only rolled his eyes as he followed him inside. “As if you weren’t just talking to me on the phone.”
“It’s a habit,” Day excused. He nodded at his feet. “Take your shoes off.”
“I know.”
“I’m just making sure. If you track dirt throughout the house and my dad sees it, he will literally kill me.”
Onyx glanced around said house as he followed Day to his room. The place was just as striking as he remembered except without the natural daylight lighting the house up, it was more eerily so. Walking through the place felt more like a maze than anything and Onyx found himself getting more and more impressed as he trailed throughout it.
He almost didn’t even notice as Day abruptly stopped before his room door and had to correct himself before he could crash into the man. He trailed after Day into his bedroom that had a different feel than the rest of the house. His room felt so much more homely and cozy because it didn’t seem so perfect. Day’s bed was unmade, there were a few clothes scattered here and there on the floor, and his room was filled with all kinds of things that were random to Onyx, but probably held some sort of deep meaning to Day.
