Lil' Miss Steel (Novels)

Selling Souls - Part 2

Selling Souls - Part 2

Jul 20, 2023

A heavy metal door swings open with a groan, and the band enters the base. As Chester leans back on the couch and stretches his limbs, Cutie attempts three times to get her chunky body up with him. "Alright, I'll pick you up, you fat dog." The stubby puppy plops on the teen's chest to nap, but the sound of elegant music awakens her. All teens turn to the sound of Amy playing twice as fast on her keytar. Every note of the song she played in practice is hit perfectly, despite being double speed. Her eyes flash a faint yellow color as she finishes, but it goes unnoticed.

Vee claps with a big smile and asks, "Wow! Where did that come from?" "Don't know," Amy says, "I just felt like playing. It was like I wasn't even telling my fingers to do it. They just...did." The teen looks at her fingers and clenches them into a fist. "I'll show those Tripknot losers who's the real trash!" With Cutie still on his chest, Chester leans his head up and says, "Ooh, Amy's acting intense, and I like it!" *BEEP! BEEP!* Red lights blink in sync with the alarm. Lajon clicks his old computer mouse and opens an app on the base PC's massive screen. "Break in at the music store," he says. Vee grabs her uniform from a crate and runs to her cubicle bedroom to change. "I'm on it!"

________________________________________________________________

In the moonlit streets of Arizona, a music store holds uninvited guests. "Guys, watch this!" shouts a voice heard inside. *SMASH!* "Nice one! Smash those basses next!" Masked teens in matching gothic attire destroy the store's instruments. Each mask appears grotesque and gorey, one identical to Tripknot's lead singer. "Craig, break somethin'!" The lone boy turns his head left and right in a paranoid state and says, "Corey, I don't think we should be doing th-" Suddenly Corey chokes his friend's wrist. "Call me Smile when I wear the mask! And we can do whatever we want! Break stuff! NOW!!" A girl's voice startles them all. "Why don't I break you instead?"

The bulky Mick carries a bongo drum in one hand as he reunites with his bandmates. With crossed arms, Smile turns his hideous mask's nose up at the girl. "Lil' Miss Steel? Heard about ya. Ain't no way we're letting a girl take us to jail." Vee's hidden eyes widen upon staring at the vocalist. That mask! Tripknot!? "You're not letting me do anything," she says, "You can't just break into a store and destroy stuff." The lead singer laughs. "What are you, the fun police? Show her some fun, boys!"

First to charge, Mick swings the bongo drum over head like a hammer. With one arm raised, Lil' Miss Steel blocks and destroys the percussive instrument. She then launches her right fist into the bulky punk's gut, however, he barely steps back. While Vee is surprised, Joey twirls a corded microphone and lassos it around the metal girl. "I can do that too!" she says. Arms bound to her side, Vee pulls out her grappling hook from her belt pouch and fires. The masked Joey finds himself even more bound than her and hits the floor.

With ease the teen hero snaps the cord just in time to catch Smile's punch, then another. Hands locked, both push against each other with surprisingly even might. Holding tightly to her enemy's hands, Vee leans back and hurls him overhead against the store wall. Why are they so strong? she ponders. However, not much time is given to think. With great strength, the mighty Mick slams a tuba over the hero's head with a low brass note.

Unable to see, Lil' Miss Steel feels around with her arms. Those arms are caught by Smile and Joey, who hurl the girl across the store. Vee crashes into a drumset with a percussive impact. *Badum! Ting!* Cymbals scatter around the store, and Tripknot decides to leave. Lagging behind, Craig looks back at the half metal hero for a second. His grotesque mask tilts down before chasing his bandmates. Finally, Vee manages to yank off the tuba from her head, finding no one else in the ruined store. "What just happened?"

As the secret daughter of two superheroes, Vee's life is more miserable than you might expect. Her parents are never home, leading her to resent them and dream of moving far away from Arizona. When he's actually home for once, her father forces the superhero life upon her, but Vee just wants to hit the bigtime in her friends' Nu Metal band. However, when a drastic event happens in the sixteen year old's life, she may be forced to learn how to use the steel skin powers inherited from her mother. Lil' Miss Steel's journey is just beginning.

Lil' Miss Steel serves as a celebration of early 2000s American culture in the form of a character driven story! Weekly releases on Tapas grant the feeling of watching a Saturday morning action cartoon. Though this novel is a full length reading experience, cartoonish artworks of every character appear as banners at the start and end of each chapter. This helps readers with less imagination to picture how their favorite characters look and adds an extra flair to the presentation.
