I woke up blinking rapidly, trying to ease my eyes into the sudden assault. I heard a sound, and I shot up, catching one of the maids ringing out a rag and looking at me, shocked.
"Oh y- your highness, you're awake," She said, dropping the rag back into the bucket and bowing at me. I looked at the maid and didn't think I had ever seen this maid before in my past life, but to be fair, the staff didn't pay me any mind.
"Who are you?" I asked, and the young woman flinched.
"W- well, your highness, my name is Edith. I am one of the new maids assigned to the palace," Edith said, still bowed at me.
"Edith, can you tell me how old I am?" I asked.
"Well, you just turned 20," She said, still bowed. Okay, so this is when my tyranny started. I started treating the staff terribly, ignoring my responsibilities, partying all night alone, and treating my father- wait, my father. He should still be alive. I was going to ask Edith more questions, but she still bowed, shaking slightly. Was she scared of me?
"Uh, Edith, you can stop bowing." As requested, Edith rose, but she kept her head down. "Edith, you can relax. I am not going to eat you. Can you tell me what you were doing?" I asked.
"W- well, I came in to check in on you because you missed a couple of your meals, and you were shaking and sweating like you were ill, so I went to ask the head maid for some medicine to treat you, and she told me to leave you because you were probably faking it," Edith said pressing her finger together. The head maid told that to her? What the hell? How hated was I? I looked at Edith, and she seemed pretty young. She had brown hair tied back in a tight bun, partly covered by a black and white frilly headwrap that matched her uniform. I didn't see much of her face, but I could see the freckles spread across.
"And?" I urged her to continue.
"Oh! Y- yes, I uh decided to take care of you anyway because I couldn't leave you here," Edith said.
"Well, thank you, Edith," I said, and she looked at me like I was on fire.
"Y- your welcome, your highness. Would you like breakfast? I am sure you might be hungry since you have been asleep for two whole days," Edith said. I have been asleep for two days!
"Wait, Edith, did anyone visit me while I was ill?" I asked.
"Um, well, I'm sorry, but it was just me," Edith said. Unbelievable, I had been bed written for two days, and the only person that came to see me was a new maid. Why haven't I noticed it before? The people that I thought cared about me never cared. I rubbed my temples, letting out a small sigh. I slowly opened my eyes, realizing that Edith still hadn't left and she was looking at me. She seems she was more concerned than scared now. I guess I should be a bit relieved.
"Edith, how old are you?" I asked, and she almost dropped the bucket in her arms, causing a bit of water to spill out.
"W- w- well, I am 19, sir," She is only 19! Why she looks much younger? "Should I fetch your breakfast, your highness?" She asked, pulling me from my thoughts.
"Y- Yes, Edith, thank you," I said, and she faltered a bit before rushing out the door. Once Edith was gone, I shifted back until my back was pressed against the cold wood of the headboard. I tilted back my head, letting out another sigh. I can't believe it. What did I do it get this kind of gift?
"Oh, thank god you are alive," I heard. I straightened my head and saw the magical woman sitting at the edge of my bed, looking at me. She looked different today. Her hair was tied back into a high ponytail, and she wore a bulky hooded cloak. It made it look like she was not wearing any pants. I looked at her feet, and she was wearing some weird-looking shoes.
"What are you wearing?" I blurted out, feeling instant regret. She looked at me before looking down at her attire, letting out a small laugh.
"Well, since this wasn't invented in a while, I am wearing a hoodie, shorts, and sneakers," she said, floating to my side and showing off her outfit. She lifted her sweater showing me her black shorts, before crossing her legs in the air.
"What happened to me?" I asked.
"Well, while we were in limbo, I forgot that your memories haven't returned yet, and your mind was still kinda buffering. So when we arrived at my room in limbo, your memories returned like a truck, and the fact that your body was not fully in that space, the pain was more unbearable," She said. Well, that explains a lot. Even though I don't understand it fully, it is still better than the alternative. I got up and realized I was still in the pants the woman offered me.
"Do you want these back?" I asked, and she turned to me, only shrugging.
"No, those were men's joggers anyway," she said.
"Joggers?" I asked. What kind of world was this girl in?
"Yea, they are like lounge pants but more comfortable," She said.
"I suppose," I said, walking over to my closet, pulling out my training clothes I barely touched, and tossing them on my bed. I looked around my room and felt the disgust settle in my chest.
"Are you alright?" She asked.
Am I alright? I looked at my hand, and my hand was smooth. I knew that I would have to recreate my whole image; I just hoped it would not be this challenging. I am not going to give up hope this time. You want a tyrant Angela? Well, not this time.
My wife and friend betrayed me and let them turn me into a tyrant just to be stabbed in the back. I got a second chance at life this time, and I will not waste it. This time I will make sure I don't turn into the tyrant they want me to be and Be a fair ruler. That won't be hard, right?
