Mode stood there looking at Calleigh for a minute with his arms crossed across his chest. The sudden sound of his voice in the quiet alley made Calleigh jump, nearly hitting her head on the wooden crate she'd been looking behind. "Not barely," Calleigh said as she stood and faced Mode. "It's just I'm not sure how far down the alleyway everything took place." She looked him right in the eyes with her hands on her hips. Mode just slightly shook his head, "I believe Officer since this was the direction I had walked from before our ill-fated encounter, we were a little closer to the middle of the alley. Your purse snatcher never made it to this end of the alley." Calleigh nodded her head, "Well I guess walking down a little further may yield better results then."
She turned and began walking down the alley with Mode just behind her. "This seems more the place or about the time frame before I was waylaid," Mode mused. He had simply begun to recognize the area since he had been able to see just fine in the dark the previous night. Calleigh nodded and began looking around a couple of the trash bins and Mode began looking on the other side of the alley. Suddenly in the waning light Calleigh caught a glimpse of something reflecting light just near Mode's foot and without warning she darted over and picked it up and realized that it was her badge. "I found it!" Calleigh exclaimed in triumph standing up right next to Mode, taking him by surprise. Even though he'd known she had come over he hadn't expected her to be so close. Unfortunately for him, having not fed as he needed, the delightful aroma that permeated from her was incredibly strong and took him by surprise causing him to quickly cover his nose and mouth with one hand and look away from her. "I'm glad that you found it. Perhaps now we can get out of this alley. The smell isn't exactly appealing." Mode hoped that his attempt to play off the potent smell of the alley would be enough to hide that he'd been disturbed by her presence.
Calliegh, being unaware of the effect that she'd had, simply replied, "Oh yeah I think I have everything I need now. Thank you for your help Mr. Operandi. I have to go anyway. I'm almost late for the evening patrol. If I’d shown up without this I would have been fired on the spot." Calliegh sheepishly looked past the badge to her foot. “Actually, if they’d found out I’d made such a big mistake to begin with I would have been fired even faster...if that were possible. We aren't supposed to have our badges with us off duty.” She looked back at Mode with pleading eyes, “Please don’t say anything to anyone Mr. Opperandi I can’t afford to lose this job.” Mode, with his hand still covering his nose and mouth simply replied, “You owe me one then I believe if it’s this important Officer.” “Of course I do Mr. Operandi, thank you!” Calleigh’s eyes sparkled back at him and with that Calliegh hurried down the alley in the opposite direction of which they'd entered the alley as it was closer to the precinct. "No problem," Mode replied." Once she had left his sight Mode leaned back against the wall of the alley until he'd composed himself then began his way back to his home near the bookshop.
Since that time Mode hadn't had a good chance to feed and the rabbit blood was only getting him so far which was how he'd found himself in this current situation. In the same alley where it had all started.
"What have you done Mr. Operandi?" Calleigh's voice came out in a quiver as the small gas powered light atop her gun showed her the scene before her of the man with blood dripping from his mouth and the woman with bite marks and blood running down her neck from them. Mode slowly held one hand up with the palm open to show that it was empty and continued to steady the limp woman in the other arm. "She's not dead, Officer. In fact she'll be fine and won't remember that any of this happened come tomorrow." "What are you!?" Calleigh asked, her voice still aquiver from the scene before her. Mode sighed, "I'm a dhampir, but I'm three quarters vampire instead of half. Unfortunately, it's been quite a while since my last drink of human blood." Calleigh struggled to hold her gun steady, "So you're a monster."
