"Shop, A Pop Opera" was released for Adult Swim by Jack Stauber, on March 8th. It has been loved by Adult Swimmers and Jack Stauber fans ever since its' release. But, what the hell is it about? With strangely named yet catchy songs like "Coffee" and "Cheese", many fans have yet to know the true meaning. So, let's get into the meaning of all the songs.
WHAT IS THE POP OPERA? The tracklist consists of eight tracks, with the names: Shop, Milk, Bread, Paper Towels, Oatmeal, Coffee, Cheese, and Finale. These songs consist of sentimental and melancholy songs like Milk, or bouncy and seemingly happy songs like Coffee. But looking closer at the lyrics, the soundtrack uses a shopping list as a metaphor for life and death.
THE SONG MEANINGS Milk is about looking back on life before death, Bread is about letting expensive belongings rule who you are as a person. Paper Towels is about the fact that messes are infinite, and once you make one, it stays on Earth forever. Oatmeal is about realizing that having a specific routine isn't healthy, and anything can ruin it. Coffee is about a slow descent into an addiction to caffeine, but still questioning if it will destroy his life or not. Cheese is about the five stages of grief while referencing all the previous songs, and Finale is about realizing that the protagonist (Referred to as Jeff by the fans) should live his life to the fullest, and not obsess over the topics from the previous songs.
