“Enough.” Boomed from somewhere behind us. “Dex, let go of the preppy,” the voice demanded.
The boy on top of me - Dex, hesitated for a moment and then I felt the weight lift from on top of me, finally releasing me from the floor and the endless torment of that night.
“But she hit me.” Dex said back to the other person as if trying to get the other person to understand why he was pinning me down. “I just wanted her to understand her place.”
“And what made her hit you in the first place?” Replied the other person. The silence from Dex must have given him an answer. “You're not in this school for more than an hour and you’ve already had your first fight. With this dumb girl no less.” He tsked under his breath before adding to me, “No offense sweetheart.”
“All I was doing was being charming-” his words got cut off when he realized that I stumbled back onto my feet.
I faced the two, the black spots finally clearing completely. I looked at Dex first, “Twinzies.” I said, noting the fact that we both probably have a broken nose before looking towards the other person.
Who, I learned, was about a inch or two taller than me with hair that was black but faded into hair as white as snow at the ends. He had clear blue eyes, his eyebrows as black as the start of his hair before it turned into white. The boy was wearing blue jeans and a plain white shirt that was not as fitted at Dex’s but it still revealed the lean muscle underneath. He had on a bright red baseball cap reversed so it was sitting on his head backwards. He had the confidence of the alpha wolf looking down on his lackeys. And I’m betting Dex over here is one of said lackeys seeing as his immediate response to Red Cap’s command.
My eyes found Red Cap’s and our gazes locked. He looked at me as if I was prey to be hunted and eaten. I straightened my spine and mirrored his expression. Surprisement flickered in his eyes before disappearing. I guess he was never questioned as the big bad leader of the Unwanted. Heh, never say never.
“Why’d you attack my boy?” He asked, not very loud but then again it didn’t need to be since it was assertive enough to be heard over a crowd.
“Ha, I attacked him?” I asked. When no one responded I went on. “Last time I checked I wasn’t the one that backed someone up against the wall and was about to violate said person. But noooo, blame the person that just defended herself. But just to let you know, I was the one to deliver the first punch and I totally kicked his butt.” I added, looking at Dex. His ears turned a shade crimson. I smiled before turning my attention back to the big, bad, mister alpha wolf.
He looked at me with a blank expression and bored eyes. If it wasn’t for the little tilt of his head you would’ve thought he didn’t give a crap about anything that's happening right now. “I see. Now tell me, preppy, didn’t I just witness him on top of you and about to smear you?” Dex gave a sneer smile at that comment but I didn’t back down.
“You are correct, but you also witnessed him tackling me from behind, which was a pretty cowardly move,” I said looking at Dex. “Guess you didn’t have the guts to fight me face to face seeing as last time you did you got your bum handed to you.” I said, still looking at Dex. Most of my hair had fallen free from its bun so I just took it out, completely forgetting the white streak that winked at them from behind my black hair. I could tell when they saw the white strip, Dex went pale and Red Cap tilted his head again to the side.
“Nice hair choice.” Red Cap said,
“I could say the same to you, but mine came naturally unlike yours.” I said, getting my hair back out of my face. Red Cap’s lips twitched into an almost small grin, while Dex’s face got even paler.
“You're funny. Name’s, Elijah Connell. This is Dexter although I'm pretty sure you guys have met before. Just a hunch. And your name is…?” Red Cap - Elijah, said.
“Hmph, your last name means strong wolf in Irish. Are you part Irish?” I ask, completely dodging the name question.
“I’ll answer that question when you answer mine first.”
“What if I don’t want to?”
“Then I won’t answer the many questions you might have.”
“Who said I have a lot of questions? I only asked one.”
“Just because you only asked one doesn’t mean you only have one in that pretty head of yours.”
I snorted. “Real charming, complimenting a girl you called dumb a little bit ago.”
“I apologized for that already.”
“No you didn’t. You just said ‘no offense, sweetheart’.”
“Oh, so then I didn’t? Well then, I’m so very sorry about this whole predicament and calling you dumb. I promise Dex won’t lay a hand on you one more time.”
“You also called me a preppy.”
“So?”
“That’s offensive to the actual preppies in this school.”
“Well then tell me your name so that I can call you by your name?”
“Why do you need to know that though? It’s not like we’ll be talking after this conversation.” I said with a shrug.
“Oh, so you don’t want to talk to me once we’re done talking here? That’s so sad, I don’t know what I’ll ever do without you.” Elijah said, mocking being stabbed in the chest. Dex snickered and I snorted.
“Anyone ever told you, you’re charming?” I asked, and he nodded in response. “Well then they were lying. You're not at all.”
“But didn’t you say I was charming a bit ago? Are you saying you were lying when you said that?”
“Ever heard of sarcasm? Well, the first lesson of sarcasm is knowing when you have received it.”
“Oh, so you're a teacher? I couldn’t tell, what with, how short you are.”
“Hmph, you sure do have a sour mouth.”
“I could say the same thing about you but the difference is that mine doesn’t taste sour.” Dex snickered.
“Who said mine tastes sour?”
“Well I don’t really believe anything until I see it or in this case…taste it.” He said with a smirk.
“How about a rain check on that, Romeo.” I said, looking at a clock on one of the hallway walls.“Fine. I’ll tell you my name but only because lunch is about to end and well this conversation has been interesting.” I took a deep breath before continuing. “Scarlett. My name is Scarlett.”
“What about your last name?”
“Ah, ah, ah, you just asked for my name. You never specified what part of my name you wanted.”
“Well…Scarlett, it was nice meeting you and I hope you’ll give me and my group another chance to make up for what took place a few minutes ago.” He said, looking at Dex, who had turned completely crimson. He looks embarrassed, or maybe he’s scared for what punishment he’ll receive.
“Well, see you around then Elijah.” I said, turning my gaze towards Dex. “And you too.” I looked back at Elijah to find he was looking at me curiously. I winked at him and turned around to head to the bathroom to fix my face.
“See you very soon, Scar.” Elijah said to my back, but I pretended not to hear him. If only he saw my scars he would realize how ironic that nickname is.
