If you’re looking for a story with really cool magic and sick fantasy mythology then you’ve come to the right place! Okay fine, it doesn’t start off that way.
I’m Jack, half elf half human. Yes, you heard that right, this is the story of how I met a prince, a little whiny at first (ow! Well you were!).
We didn't start off as close as we are now. But let’s get into the story.
A little warning, whatever elves you’ve seen in movies and books, calm, level-minded, these are the polar opposites. Selfish, hot-tempered, and not nice! Now that we’ve got that out of the way.
They grabbed my arm. (The elvish guards) “Come on! I was just playing it was hot! Haven’t you ever had a snowball fight before? Oh right, I forgot, this is the place where the fun gets sucked out of you.”
“Watch your tongue!”
I had finally had enough of the elves at this point. I was about to go ask Felix if I could live with him. I figured he would say no but was optimistic. Felix had a dislike for the elves as well.
I went to the punishment room, they might as well make that my bedroom, I’m always being put in there for everything. Their belief.
It's always Jack's fault.
Why’d all the kids have to be perfect angels?
“No! Please, I’ll be good! I promise not to have any fun ever again!” I struggled uselessly against the guards.
“It’s for your own good! It’ll show you to be more careful with your magic!”
I was chained.
This was the first time I had used my powers in a long time. But I didn’t say that.
I had no idea how long I’d been in there, an hour, a month… a year? Every now and then they would give me some berries.
“Jack?!” Felix opened the trap door.
“Hm?” I sat up. My stomach was in knots. I was so weak the chains became heavy when I stood up.
Felix unlocked the chains.
“How long?” I asked as Felix helped me out of the chamber.
“A week…Jack, what did you do?” He asked calmly.
“Had a snow day. It was really hot! It was only in the treehouse. It didn’t affect anyone else I swear! It was probably Sam’s goody to shoes mom.”
“Jack!” Felix laughed
“What?! It’s true! What am I doing here Felix?! I wanted to learn rune magic! Why can’t I just go back home? And she teach me?! That’s how it was supposed to be!“
“You know why Jack.” He said gently.
“I would kill for one of her ham sandwiches right now!” I sniffed.
“Well, I have her recipe… how bout I make us some huh?”
“Yeah…”
The she I was referring to was my grandma, I’d stayed with her for a while until I came here. I may have been attacked by a crazy monster while there… They decided this was the best place for me. (They’d reconsider if they saw these guys)
My friends were waiting for me at Felix’s. “Dude! We were so worried! I think that’s a record even for you. I’m sorry Jack… I told her not to tell!” See?! I knew it was her!
“Y-yeah…” I gave a small laugh. “I-it’s okay”
“How bout ham sandwiches for everyone?!”
“Oh yeah!” Lillie said.
“I can’t. My mom wants me back… I’m sorry.” Sam said.
“You have got to try one next time! It’s so good!”
“I will, bye!”
“Why didn’t you invite us to the snow day, huh?”
“I’d gotten in trouble at the school, they kicked me out so I went to the tree house.”
“You told them about the dream didn’t you?”
“Yeah.”
“What dream?” Felix asked,
“I wasn’t sure if I should tell you, it was about the place getting attacked.”
“How long have you been having it?”
“A week, but I didn’t know what it was. The first few days it was all blurry and weird, some of it was from the enemy's point of view…. Which I found really weird.”
“Hmm.” Felix thought for a moment.
We didn’t speak for the rest of dinner. I was starting to nod, I found that I don’t sleep well when I am trapped.
“Could I stay here tonight?”
“You can stay here every night.”
“What? Really?!”
“Yeah, Tricorne's room is just how he left it. I’m sure he wouldn’t mind you staying there to keep his stuff safe.
“You’re the best!” I hugged him.
A few weeks pass. I had the dream a couple of times, I wasn’t sure about it until late one night
I woke up to people screaming he realized I’d fallen asleep in the giant oak tree I went to a lot.
What was I doing here again? Then I remembered the conversation with the elders the night before. The most embarrassing moment of my life. Word of advice never tell your dreams to an important elf councel, you'll save yourself a lot of embarrassment
Clang! Shink!
I was brought out of my thoughts by swords clashing below. To my horror, (but not surprise.) my dream came true…
The one I warned everyone about.
I tucked closer into the branches to stay out of sight. Ignoring the tiny stabbing branches now in my arms.
I let out a silent sob as one by one the elves were taken down. And these were the warriors who spent their time training day and night. (Hey I may have hated it there but I'm not heartless.)
I shifted, my feet were falling asleep. So far no one knew I was there.
A woman called one of the guards. “Gather the women and children, follow me.”
The man mumbled something I couldn’t make out.
Shouts of the attack came from the village. The humans were winning by a long shot. (I knew it was them because the elves were reserved for war)
They must have brought a whole army.
But why though? we haven’t done anything wrong, They seem to have come out of nowhere.
I ducked as two sets of footsteps crunched under the fallen leaves.
“Shouldn’t we stop now? We’ve got the leader! Why can’t we just leave them!” A small voice said from below. (Aka the prince!)
“Rais,” A deeper voice said, “if you don’t wish to fight just stay here. Alright?”
I had heard that tone many times before. Disappointment.
“Fine! At least I don’t have innocent blood on my hands!” The smaller voice said once his father was out of earshot. He sat down under my tree
With all the attention on the village I decided to take my chance, the boy was obviously on my side. I didn't think he would tell anyone if I was seen.
I landed almost silently on the ground. The boy shuffled with something.
Thwaang!
An arrow whizzed past my head. I turned in the boy's direction.
“Sorry! Thought you might be one of those flying creatures, that breathe fire.”
“A dragon?” I laughed at his description. “I wish” I sighed.
They heard voices. I tilted my head.
“Run!” The boy said.
“HEY! IN HERE!” I shouted. Trying to distract them from the elf king. I took off.
