I’ve only seen Scarlett cry a few times.
The first time was obviously after her parents died.
I didn’t know Scarlett then, I only knew what happened because I followed some ghouls that night. They escaped their cages and that set the rest of us into a frenzy. Mostly because the house I grew up in took care of the ghouls, per Master’s orders.
I never knew the full extent of a ghoul’s hunger until that night. I knew that they had less control over it than us, Reapers did, but I didn’t know how rabid they got when they did get the tiniest drop of blood.
They had enough brainpower to stage an ambush on an oncoming car. They circled it like vultures until on one bend, they made themselves known. It caused the car to flip over, the man in the driver’s seat flew out the windshield before the car landed upside down in a ditch near the road.
The ghouls approached the passenger’s door and yanked it clean off the hinges. A second later one of them was dragging a woman by the scalp over near where the man fell. Then they lay a feast on them.
I thought about taking advantage of them while they were distracted but then I saw a form crawling out of one of the backseat doors. I decided I was curious enough to stay behind the tree line.
Call it morbid curiosity or whatever, but I just wanted to know what this human thought they were going to do with ghouls, especially when I realized that the human was a girl. Probably around the age of five from the looks of it.
The show was boring until the ghouls realized that they missed one.
The girl scrambled back into the car for some reason I couldn’t imagine. When she crawled out again, she came face to face with one of the ghouls. She tried to run but the ghoul caught her by the neck and brought her to the rest of the group.
Realizing that the inevitable was going to happen, I stepped forward planning on advancing on them. But I stopped when I saw a sharp piece of glass in her hand.
What was she going to do with-?
My thought got cut short by the piercing scream the ghoul let out.
I can’t believe it. The girl stabbed the ghoul in the neck.
I was shocked, stunned even.
The ghoul dropped her but she didn’t get far. Another ghoul trapped her from behind with his arms. She bucked against him and must have hit him somewhere, because she was able to get free.
At this point her back was facing me, her body retreating to the woods where I was.
The ghoul she stabbed did a sneak attack from behind. They both landed with a thud that was muffled by the snow. Blood leaked from her head, and I realized that she hit her head on a rock that jutted out from the snow.
I thought that was it, that they were going to feed from her then and she’d die. But then she shocked me once again.
I heard her bones snapping, and saw silver fur sprouting from her skin. The ghoul on top of her lept from on top of her, backing away.
He didn’t get far. The wolf that now took the girl’s place was growling, advancing on him slowly like a predator. One of the other ghouls raced forward but couldn’t get a good grip on her, causing his nails to skate across her back leaving claw marks in her thick fur.
She recovered quickly though. She whipped around on the ghoul and attacked.
Her jaws sunk into the ghoul’s neck while her claws were holding him down. Finally with one swift motion, she ripped the ghoul’s head clean off. The head landed near another ghoul.
Quick as lightning she attacked the others. All resulting in their limbs being ripped off.
The ghoul that got stabbed was still behind her, forgotten. He pulls out a wicked dagger, sharpened to perfection. It gleams a shiny black with silver swirling around the blade.
But it's not silver, no that doesn’t actually work on wolven. The blade is made out of onyx and mercury. Both are deadly to the wolven.
Crap, now I really do have to step in because of the bull truce between us and her kind. The truce states that any death to either by the other results in a civil war and we don’t want that.
Then again I did intentionally let her rip most of the ghouls' heads. But that was different. She’s just a scared little girl and these are bloodthirsty, crazed maniacs.
Though, I will say that she does not seem like a scared little girl when she’s in her wolven form.
I shadow stepped up behind the last ghoul putting him in a choke hold. This caught him off guard making him go motionless for a second. That's when he really went berserk.
He was thrashing and kicking out at me trying to get me to drop him. I just held on harder. A growl sounded from in front of us.
Guess we got the attention of the young wolven.
She prowled forward, her head held high, blood dripping from those deadly jaws. I felt a spark of fear for a millisecond, but that quickly turned into morbid excitement. It didn’t matter that she was probably going to try to attack me too.
The only thing that really got my attention was the fact that this girl’s wolven form was beautiful. I’ve never been in such awe of one of her kind.
Her eyes were the palest shade of green, almost a gray color, as they assessed the fact that now she had two opponents. She let out a deep snarl when she realized who I was holding.
The ghoul that initially tried to kill her. She basically forgot about me.
Just as she got close enough to swipe her claws at the ghoul, he spun his body, putting me between him and the wolven.
I thought that for sure she was going to strike anyway. I didn’t realize I was holding my breath until I felt her muzzle nudge me in my side. It was as if she was trying to tell me to get out of the way so she could take what she really wanted.
Surprised, I dropped the ghoul and stepped to the side, giving her an opening. She walked past me only stopping for a second to lick my hand. Such a strange creature she is.
I smiled, feeling this weird urge to protect her. Wanting this scumbag that was in front of us, dead more than ever.
He looked at me with betrayal in his black eyes.
“Traitorrrr.” He seethed.
“I was never obligated to help you in the first place.” I whispered back.
The wolven stalked forward and swiped at his chest. Skin and muscle tore very easily and soon we had an eyeful of blood and other bodily fluids. She stalked up to him until she was standing over him. Just as she clamped her jaws around his neck, something gleaned from underneath her before her cry came out.
That bastard stabbed her.
The ghoul pushed her off causing her to soar over the ground, landing with a whimper. I looked behind me and saw that she landed a few paces away in the snow.
I let out a snarl when I looked back down at him. He had a triumphant grin plastered on his face, making me want to tear off his flesh.
Lightning quick I caught him in his blood neck in a death grip. He tried to slash me with his dagger but I dodged each swipe. I then grabbed his wrist and wrenched it back. He yelped and dropped the dagger.
I leaned down right next to his ear and made a deadly promise.
“You will die tonight and it will be the most gruesome death of all.”
He blanched off the little color he had, looking at white as the snow. “Shhhe has bonded with youuu.” His voice slithered.
What…?
“Too bad shhhe’ll be dead soooon.” He let out a horrible cackle.
I saw red.
The next thing I knew, I put a hand on his shoulder and used the hand on his throat to rip it off. I dropped both his body and head in a bloody heap.
Taking one final look at this sick bastard and turned around to the wolven. I saw that she was still breathing, thanks to her chest moving up and down but it was rising and falling too quickly.
I shadow stepped up to her and saw that the ghoul made an X mark on her.
Dammit! That mark ment that she would be hunted more of my kind. Only the worst of criminals got this mark, it signified that the person who had the mark would be hunted and killed in the worst way. For some reason I couldn’t let this young wolven die like that.
Hell, I couldn’t let her die now from mercury and onyx poisoning.
Thinking quickly I dragged my nails across the skin of my wrist and held it down to her mouth letting the drops of red go down her throat.
We have been taught that the blood of our kind can heal any wound. Of course, we’ve only tried it with humans but humans and wolven are similar in genetics. So this just might work…?
The wolven’s eyes snapped open, but they looked different. The whites of her eyes turned into the color of blood, her iris’ bleeding all of its color until it was white as the snow, her pupils were dilated, leaving only a thin ring of white around it.
She started shifting into her human form, her body shrinking until it was the size of a dainty little girl. So different from when in her wolven form. Her eyes closed again as she curled into a ball, trying to keep out the cold. I watched astonished as a strip of her hair started turning white.
Good gods, what have I done?
Because she wasn’t only a wolven, she was an alpha.
She would grow to lead a pack, possibly to attack my kind.
I tried to muster a hinge of guilt but I only found relief that she was okay. I was having such a weird reaction around her.
I wanted to help but if anyone knew of the treason I had just committed, we’d both be dead. So I did the only thing that I could do, I called the police and left an anonymous tip that a car crashed with only one survivor.
Realizing what a hassle the dead bodies would cause I dragged each body and decapitated head to the tree line. Then I sat there and watched over the young wolven until I heard sirens, then I hid deeper in the woods but made sure I could watch and hear what was happening.
When I saw the paramedics reach the young wolven and try to wake her, I held my breath again and prayed that she was going to be okay. But when she awoke and learned about what happened she started crying.
My heart broke for this young orphaned wolven.
