Master was furious.
Once I got back, I was bombarded with complaints about not bringing any ghouls back alive. Because I technically did bring them back.
If their heads were what they meant.
Apparently the situation was so out of control that the keeper of the house had to contact the Master about it. I really understand the big deal, they were just a bunch of ghouls that we could easily replace.
When Master showed up, that was when I really got in trouble. Because I was “too young” to be gathering a bunch of ghouls. Even though I had already been alive for almost a century and finally finished my culling. Reaching my last growth spurt and growing into what my body would be like for the rest of eternity.
That is if the Master didn’t kill me tonight.
“What made you act so rashley?!” Master roared down at me from where I was kneeled down.
I stayed silent looking down at his feet.
“Answer me when I’m speaking to you, youngling!” He grabbed my chin in a harsh grip, jerking my head up until all I could do was look him in the eyes.
“I acted impulsively. I am truly sorry and I will never do it again.” I totally wasn’t sorry.
He must have seen that in my eyes because he removed his hand from my chin, only to grab my throat. In a swift motion, he dragged my body up until I was dangling in the air in front of him. From this point of view, I had to look down to see him but it was obvious who was looking down at who. And it definitely wasn’t me.
“You will speak the truth when you are speaking to me.” He seethed, ice dripping from his steely voice.
If I could talk at all, I wanted to point out.
But his grip never loosened so I had to figure out how to talk without help from him.
“No…one…was ready…so…that…left only…me…” I wheezed out from around his tight grip on my throat.
Master still looked furious but he let go of me, causing me to drop to the ground. I tried to land on my feet but my knees buckled from under me, bringing me all the way down.
As I was trying to get air back into my lungs, Master’s gaze went from me to the housekeeper. “Is this true?” He asked. It was more of a demand than a question.
The housekeeper looked terrified but managed to nod.
Master went off the rails then.
He shadow stepped up to the old looking woman. Before anyone could react, he plunged his fist through her chest and ripped out a bloody heart. The housekeeper dropped, now and forever dead.
He held out the bleeding heart and turned, looking at each of the Reapers in the room. “This,” He motioned to the heart. “is what happens when you are unprepared. When you send out a youngling to do the dirty work for you.”
I really hated that name, youngling. It makes me sound weak, when in fact I most certainly am not.
Master turned back to me with a curious look on his face. “What happened to the ghouls anyway?”
Crap. I can’t rat out that young wolven to Master. He’ll tear her apart if he finds out she broke the law and murdered his ghouls. Then again, why do I care for that girl?
“They got feisty and made me kill them.” I say. Dumbfounded by how confident I sound.
He looks at me for a while trying to figure out if I’m telling the truth. Then he bursts out laughing.
What in the ever living hell?
When he’s over his laughing fit, he wipes a tear from his eye and asks, “You kill all of them?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Wow. I’ve never been so impressed in a millenia.” He smiles at me as if he’s proud.
I smile back, trying to make this as convincing as possible.
Until Merek speaks up.
“Actually, if I may interrupt our high eminence, he did not kill all of them.”
Master turns from me to Merek who is kneeling but looking Master dead in his eyes. “Do pray tell, Merek.”
Merek takes that as an invitation. “Well, the ghouls attacked a car that had a family inside. They killed all the passengers except the daughter who turns out to be a wolven. Anyway, she ripped all of them to shreds until there was one that had an onyx and mercury blade. As you know, that is a deadly weapon to a wolven. But he,” Merek pointed to me. “stopped the ghoul when the wolven was stabbed.” He pauses to smirk at me with triumph. “Then he fed the wolven his blood before calling the police and cleaning up the mess.”
It goes deadly silent. I stare swords at Merek, promising that he will die. Then the Master whirled on me. I tensed up waiting for him to land a blow that would most likely kill me. But when I opened my eyes, I saw that Master made no move on me, but he was staring at me in shock and horror.
“Why..?” He doesn’t finish but understanding dawns on him. “What have you done?” His voice is a whisper filled with terror.
I looked at him in confusion.
Damn Merek starts talking again. “Before the ghoul died, he said that the wolven bonded with him. I believe that is why he did what he did.”
There goes the word again.
“What the hell does that mean?” I ask, starting to get a little scared myself.
Everyone looks appalled except for Merek. No, he has the smuggest smile I’ve ever seen. And that’s before he opens his big mouth again.
“It means that your life is binded with hers now. So whatever happens to her happens to you and the other way around.”
“But that’s impossible.” I say, horror finally making its appearance in me.
“Oh, but apparently it's not. Because that is what's happening to you. Not only that, but you gave her your blood too. Meaning we don’t know what she is to become or what kind of danger we are now in because of you.”
The Master is on his knees now, still staring in open horror at me.
“We must find that girl.” Master murmurs so low that only I can hear him. In a louder voice he says, “We must find that wolven and figure out what the hell she has done to my son.”
