“You’re hearing us out?” Flynn asked.
“Maybe,” Harmey said, and then looked at Death then smiled.
“Still a pick-me.” Death said.
“You didn’t tell me your name was Calixo,” I said.
“Wow! You’re accepting it now? As the last death witch? That’s amusing. What a large milestone!” Harmey teased.
“You know how to perform a transportation spell?” Death asks, breaking the playful atmosphere.
“Of course, I am a life witch,” Harmey answered. “Why?”
“How do you undo things like that?”
“You just have to transport it back to where it came from.”
“What if it isn’t around here? Another planet for example.”
“Do you have an idea how far away it is from here and what it looks like?”
“Yes.”
“The same with how you perform a transportation spell on nearby things, you just have to envision the place you want to transport it to while casting the spell.”
“I see.”
“Why? Has something happened? It’s unusual enough to ask for a life witch in the upper but the question increases the mystery.”
“No, nothing happened.”
“You’d bother yourselves like this for nothing? With your personality, Death, I highly doubt.” Harmey shifted her attention to Flynn. “If you don’t want to tell me, I don’t mind. It’s your business after all. Say, Flynn, you never told us why you left the university.”
“There’s a school around here?” I asked out of amusement. The lower is deprived of all these. Death is right, I’d have more resources up there.
“You don’t know? When were you born? Yesterday?” Harmey said.
“I am not going to tell my reason to anyone, ma’am,” Flynn said then turned. “I’ll wait in the village, it seems that I am no longer needed here.” He said then walked out.
“You teach? I didn’t know.” Death said to Harmey.
“How would you? You’re down here.” Harmey said then sighed.
“Would it be possible for me to enroll in your university?” I asked. Their attention shifted on me and I became aware of my surroundings. I look bare, naive. Asphalt followed Flynn out there so it's just us three here.
“No, you’re not going up there, kid.” Death said.
“Why are you depriving a witchlet of her right to learn?” She looked at me and then smiled. “Of course-” She was still speaking when Death pulled me away from Harmey.
“What are you doing? We are here to get you back.” Death said. She’s upset, I can feel it with how hard she held my arm.
“It came from you, Death. The resources here are scarce. If I can get more resources there, it would be better.” I said.
“And how are you planning to go there? Crossing Discedite is hard enough but keeping your disguise as a witch is harder. You don’t even possess any kind of magic. They have assessments, kid, not only will you fail that, but you’ll also let everyone know that you’re human. You know the consequences of revealing your identity around here.” She let go of my arm and stared at me. “You’re smart but you’re just a kid. Stop throwing yourself out there because even the smallest kind of attention could get you killed.” She sighed and looked at Flynn’s and Asphalt’s direction. They are playing around with a ball of yarn that they must have found on the corner. We are at the very edge of the village near the rock. It’s dusty here and very quiet since not many witches go here because of the fear they have of the things in the barrier. Now and then, there’d be a toddler running towards our direction but a witch or a warlock would be quick enough to keep them away from this place. A mile away from us is a tall tower that could be the tower of the erraticons monitoring the barrier that they made. “Dismiss the topic with Harmey kid, and bid your goodbyes. We’ll be waiting for you nearby.” Death said then left. I’ve been with Death for so long and I’ve always thought that her actions are ingenuine. If anything, she’s looking after herself instead of me since she’s the one who took me here. It’s against their law to mingle with a human, much less to take care of one. But right here, I can see that she’s genuinely worried about me and not herself. It is easier to just throw me to the upper and let myself know without creating any leads for her. She could cut the ties quietly and let me deal on my own. But she did not. It is not because of guilt of bringing me here, maybe a part of it but if that’s the case, she would have thought of the situation twice since it is tempting to get rid of the guilt. I don’t deserve Death, no, I don’t
I walked back to Harmey and she looked at me as if expecting my return. “You said I can get enrolled in the university?” I asked. She didn’t know that I’m human but she must have an idea that I am not like other witches here.
“Yes. I can get you in but on one condition.”
“What is it?”
“Bring Flynn back to the university. If you’re able to do that, then I’ll get you in as if you’re one of the upper. I could slip in your application. However, that’s all I can do. How you’ll manage to stay there is up to you.”
“I could always refuse?”
“I am no bad witch here, witchlet. I am giving you a choice, not an order.” She said then glanced behind me. “It seems that they are waiting for you back there. You better get going. I’d be waiting for your answer.” She smiled then stepped back and dissolved into the darkness.
