Everlasting Soul

Mana and Magic

Mana and Magic

Aug 08, 2023

About 2 years have passed since my reincarnation.
My legs, waist, and arms were starting to become strong enough for me to walk on my own feet.
And slowly but surely, I was beginning to learn this world's language.
Having been a baby I have considered what I should really do starting to this point.
What do I want to do?
Should I become a benevolent king of some kingdom?
Or should I become a renowned adventurer?
There were many things to consider.
Mage, scholar, writer, warrior, and any other possible result of what I wanted to do.
As a 2-year-old there was little to nothing that I can do, the most that I can do was sleep all day on my futon as the cold wind brush against my nose.
Realizing I can do anything later when I grow up, I decided to just read and learn from books.
Therefore, having to learn how this world works may give me benefits, better than having to laze around and stare at the sky with a dumb look.
There were only a few books in the house.
I didn't know but somehow, I feel that books may be expensive in this world seeing only 3 to 5 books were only present in the house.
It could be the reason why this world was so undeveloped.
Even though I didn't have any time to learn the words of this world, I could easily understand each letter and meaning from the sentences.
It'll be easy if I could memorize enough vocabulary, making it beneficial to speak fluently.
Having to understand the words and sentences, I easily got the hang of it seeing as I can now utter words such as, "Life and love"
Maybe it had something to do with how younger bodies memorize really well compared to adult bodies.
Nevertheless, I enjoyed reading while passing the time with only books surrounding me.
The 5 books in the house.
"A Fish in the Sea"
A story about a fish lost from its group, struggling to survive as it encountered numerous predators trying to take its life.
"The World of Verldura"
This a book that contains the names and realms of the inhabitants of this world.
"The Dangerous Thren Woods"
A book guide about the dangerous region known as Thren Woods, and ways to handle the monsters living inside of the dark forest.
"Guide for Mages"
A guidebook for mages, that explains how to use magic spells, from advanced rank to master rank.
"The Legend of Yggdrasil"
The story is about the world tree that supports the lives of the inhabitants of this world.
Except for the other 2 novels, the other 3 remaining books let me learn a lot about many things.
Especially the Guide for Mages.
Reading through it I learned a few basics.
First of all, from the book, "Guide for Mages"
Magic users can be classified into three categories.
The first category is an enhancer type of mages, this is the type of mages who can do close combat by enhancing their body with their mana.
The second Category is a Conjurer type of mage, this is the type of mage who needs a specific distance to conjure their elemental spells from a safe space.
The third Category is the mix of both an enhancer and a conjurer mage, this is the type of mage who can do close-quarter combat, while also casting elemental spells to improve or assist their combat power when in battle, a Converger.
There are various functions for magic, but according to the guidebook it was initially developed for war.
Still having to see my mom use it on a stove, I wonder what happened to the power used for war.
To use magic, you must have mana.
Contrariwise, if you have mana, you can use magic.
There are two ways to use mana and magic.
The first one is to use the ones in your body, and the second one is to use something that contains mana.
Thinking of a good example, it's probably something similar to pushing a cart with your weight.
A long time ago, people used only their mana for magic; and as generations passed, magic started to pick up its pace and was studied by multiple scholars, resulting in an increased fire power and increased mana consumption.
Thus, mages from the past always needed something to fill the requirement that they're lacking for an increase of strength for their spells.
There are also two ways of casting magic.
The first is to tell a specific chant to activate a spell.
And the second is to activate it by imagining complex formulas for a specific spell.
Back in the past having to activate magic through formula was the normal way, but as time passed casting by chants from mouth became the mainstream as its easier and faster to do.
The reason for the formula being the best to go with in the past was because after successfully having to use the spell you wouldn't really need to make another one making it useable for repeat attacks.
Though one day a magician successfully shortened the chanting procedure for incantations making it easier for mages to activate it.
The simplest incantation took about 2 seconds to chant, while stronger attacks needed 10 seconds to chant.
In this world, a person's mana isn't set by the time of their birth but can be exponentially increased by exhausting your mana reserves.
It's similar to growing out your muscles, by breaking the muscle fibers and being partnered by rest it becomes stronger making you stronger.
Basically, everyone can become a strong mage as long as one doesn't laze on training.
So, what about me then?
Apparently, aside from the fact that you can increase your mana capacity, it is also hereditary.
One example is the nobles.
The lords' ancestors participated in wars in the past, and by giving birth to heirs their mana pool capacity upon birth was already large, then partnered with hard work results in monsters that can overthrow a war with only their presence.
Having seen my mother and father use mana meant that there was a probable chance that I also have a decent mana pool capacity.
In any case, I began trying to cast the simplest magic.
The guidebook contained only the chant-like method for activating magic, and since it's easier to perform chant than magic formulas, I started my incantation.
It seems having to use simpler spells meant having to spell out only a few seconds of chanting.
While on the other hand having a more complicated spell required long chanting
In fact, some even required to be activated with magical formulas alongside its chanting method.
Nonetheless, there's another method of activating magic spells, this method provides more battle-ready spells as it didn't require any incantations or magical formulas.
But based on the book it is only used by powerfully skilled mages.
"Elemental assimilation"
Elemental assimilation, or being one with the elements; or something like that.
This method didn't require any chanting and magical formula, instead, you needed to influence the elemental spell yourself.
More like being a catalyst for your connection and nature.
Enough about that.
Holding the guidebook in my left none dominant hand, and stretching my right hand, I read out the words.
"Guide thee thine water clear and flow, bestow the protection as nature flows, WATER BALL"
I felt a precise sensation of heat and water gathering in my right hand.
My blood feels like it's surging from my veins to my hands, as if being squeezed out by an unknown force, and soon after a sphere of water the size of a bowl appeared in front of my hand.
!!
The moment I saw the sphere of water floating around, the water bullet disappeared.
Checking the book again.
There it said as long as you succeeded the spell should be shot out, but instead of how it should be, it disappeared instead.
Maybe because I disturbed my focus that it failed midway?
Ok!
One more time.
"Concentrate…Concentrate"
The feeling of my body heating up, the feeling of my blood squeezing out, and finally the feeling of water surging out.
Once again, raising my right hand and recalling the feeling I had before, I tried visualizing the image of the water sphere that appeared earlier.
Concentrate.
I don't know much about mana, but reading the guide I was sure I can't do this multiple times.
Concentrate and be successful.
Deep breaths.
Water, Water, Bullet, Bullet, Bullet.
Hah, concentrate one more time.
Once again, the sphere of water appeared in front of my right hand.
"Eh?"
*Drip*
But I didn't even start chanting yet, how could something appear already?
How did?
I just felt the sensation and recalled it using my mind.
Could it be, that I didn't need to chant and just recall the feeling of casting the spell?
Wait, but doesn't that make incantations and magical formulas worthless?
What I did was Elemental Assimilation, right?
