I slid the door open to an empty classroom. Finally, I arrive on time—back to my old routine. I can’t believe so much has happened in a span of a week. My discovery. Sleepless nights. Another accident. And in the middle of it all, Seo JaeHoon.
His letter has mentioned that he means no harm. He won't share my secret. There is no guarantee that he'll do as he says, but I guess I've been looking for an easy way out of my predicament. I choose to believe his words.
The letter ends with an invitation to hang out with him. He has given options like going to the park, a PC cafe, or the amusement park.
It might be better if I don't accept it, but when else can I try out things like this?
The curious side of me has won. I'm going to meet him in the theaters this Saturday. It's probably the safest choice in the list, and it's something I'm really interested in.
Just one time. I’ll just hang out with him just once, I remind myself as I sit at my desk.
However, my desk isn’t in the way I left it. Several items have been neatly placed on my desk: a bottle of banana milk, a can of orange juice, a box of mango smoothie, and a paper bag from a nearby pharmacy. In front of them, a pile of light blue sticky notes is carefully attached on the table. A drawing of Bonobono, hands raised as if cheering, informs me of the sender of these gifts. I pluck the notes and read them one by one.
[Hello, MinSeok.]
[I heard of your accident yesterday. I’m sorry I couldn’t be of help. If only we were assigned in the same class…]
[I brought you some drinks to keep you energized throughout the day. Don’t skip lunch later!]
[Oh, and I went to the pharmacy to get you some things, but I didn’t know what you might need.]
[Good luck today! And if you need any help, just let me know...]
[... not just today; If you need help, I’ll be there. - Lee YooJin]
The last page ends with a phone number and a hand-drawn logo of the Kokoa app. I wonder why Lee YooJin worries about me too much. Maybe, it’s really just his personality. If I am someone else, he'll probably do the same.
I remember our last conversation early this week.
"You don’t have to be afraid".
I still don’t understand what he means by it, but I agree with him. I have been so afraid of Seo JaeHoon, and maybe there’s nothing to be afraid of, after all.
Noise and chatter fill the classroom as my classmates arrive. They all do the same thing when they enter the door—glance at me like I’m someone who has risen from the dead.
And suddenly, a loud gasp startles the peaceful morning.
"Whoah! Shim MinSeok!"
The owner of the voice scrambles to the seat in front of me, grasping the backrest to face me.
"Are you ok now?"
Yoon SuBin stares at me with puppy dog eyes. I can’t believe someone could be this energetic in the morning.
"Y-yes."
"Doesn’t your leg hurt anymore?" He twists his body to look at the side of my thigh.
"It’s ok now."
"But JaeHoon said you could hardly walk yesterday."
"Uh, yes, but uhhhh… my uncle said it was just due to the shock of my fall."
"So you’re completely ok now?"
I nod.
"That’s a relief. Oh!" SuBin's eyes wander to the items on my desk. "Whoah! Angel Bonobono!" he exclaims.
"Huh?"
"That’s the popular Angel Bonobono!"
"Angel Bonobono?"
"It’s what the other kids call it. I didn't know you're friends with Lee YooJin."
"Uhm… N-not really," I really can't say we are.
"Eh? Impossible! If you receive a drawing of a BonoBono, YooJin considers you his special friend!"
He clears his throat before he continues, "And as you know, he’s like a guardian angel. That's why everyone calls it Angel Bonobono."
SuBin's info makes me wonder. Why would YooJin consider me his special friend?
"MinSeok, I thought you were just a quiet student. But here you are, friends with the most popular students in school."
I want to interrupt him. I’m not really JaeHoon’s, YooJin’s, or anyone’s friend. But it’s hard when the person is Yoon SuBin. It’s difficult to find an opening. It’s like he’s rapping right now.
"Of course, I am just like you. I’m JaeHoon’s friend. And I’m friends with YooJin, too. We’re both class presidents and class presidents must stick together. I’m even friends with the class president of 2-B. So..."
SuBin moves closer. His hands move quick, grabbing my hands and trapping them between his. My heart skips a beat. My reflexes are fast, but this energetic boy is faster. If JaeHoon has not told me SuBin isn’t a Perceiver, I'm probably in a state of panic by now.
"... I think we should be friends as well!" He smiles from ear to ear.
"H-huh?" It’s all I can muster. I still am in shock of him grabbing my hands.
"Is this annoying guy bothering you?" a figure speaks behind SuBin.
SuBin lets go of my hand and faces JaeHoon. "MinSeok and I are friends now. We’re all friends now."
JaeHoon tilts his head to me and raises an eyebrow.
"Right, Minseok?" SuBin goes back to me.
How could I say no? I just nod in response.
"Ah! I forgot!" SuBin suddenly stands up. "I need to collect the homework notebooks from the teacher’s office. I’ll be back!" And just like that, SuBin disappears from the classroom.
JaeHoon moves closer.
"Are you ok?"
"Y-yeah, my wound isn’t that—"
"No, I meant, with SuBin… I saw him holding your hand."
"Ah. I-I guess…" My eyes stray to the floor. Reading his letter, believing he doesn’t have bad intentions for me, and chatting him up last night does not magically remove the awkwardness I feel for JaeHoon.
He just nods and makes his way to his seat. I guess he feels the awkwardness, too.
Despite that, seeing him this morning makes me realize… that I am actually looking forward to this Saturday.
A secret that can never be revealed. A secret discovered by a touch of his skin. A secret that will bring them together.
.....
High school student Shim MinSeok has a secret he must hide at all cost; he’s a Myriad, a person with a multicolored soul and, to the rest of the world, a potential criminal. In fear of revealing himself, he keeps his distance from other people. After all, he doesn’t know who is and isn’t a Perceiver, someone who can see other’s souls through touch.
When a small accident leads to being discovered by his popular classmate Seo JaeHoon, his true nature is now one step away from being common knowledge in the entire school.
Will this be the end of MInSeok’s 'normal' life? Or with the handsome JaeHoon in the picture, will this be the beginning of something else?
