After dinner, they all went to sleep, ready for the busy day ahead.
When everyone got their tasks for the day the next morning, Miles could easily see that there weren't as many, but it made sense, since they were much more time consuming. Luckily, he was doing most of them with Laura, so that was always something. But he was in a hurry, so he needed to start immediately.
Most of the tasks had something to do with the tables and chairs. He was supposed to take the chairs and tables out of the basement and put them in the ballroom. It seemed pretty easy until he saw how many there were. He went down to the basement with the other servants that were supposed to do it with him, and when he got there, he was surprised with the amount of chairs and tables. The basement was dark, but there was light enough to see everything clearly enough. There was a bit of spider web here and there, and it was huge, but there wasn’t nearly as far to the roof as there was in the ballroom.
One whole half of the basement was consumed by purely chairs and tables. He wasn’t even wrong when he thought ‘Bro, the space that only the chairs take up is at least the size of the room we sleep in!’
The others didn’t seem too surprised though. They just took a deep breath and began, and it seemed like they had some kind of system.
The chairs were stacked on top of each other all the way to the roof, so six people had bought a tall ladder each. The ones who bought the ladders put them down with the 1st and 2nd being a little less than 1 m apart, and between the 2nd and 3rd being much further and the cycle continuing like that. They climbed all the way to the top with another person only a few steps behind them. It continued like that all the way to the bottom. Then, the two people from the top of the ladders closest to each other would take the first few chairs and help each other hand them down to the next person, again and again and again until they reached the bottom. Then someone would take at least two of them and go to the ballroom. It seemed like they had done this many times before.
Of course, the ones that took the tables did it very differently. Since the tables were much bigger and heavier, they split into pairs. They’d then take a table, put it upside down on another table, and carry one end each and help each other lift it to the ballroom. They had developed some nice and easy techniques over the years. Miles then realised that he had been standing there for way too long and started helping the others.
When the clock hit about 10 in the morning, they cleaned up the ladders and got to their other tasks. Luckily for Miles, this was a nice one: he was going to the market with Collones and other servants, including Laura. Now that he thought about it, he hadn’t been to the market since he got there- he hadn’t even been outside of Johan and Collones’ property. Well, At least he got to try it now, right?
He walked out to the entrance like it said on the list, and he was met with… Carriages? ‘Carriage? Who still used carriages? Oh, yeah, I’m in a different world, they probably don’t know about cars yet,’ Miles thought, walking over to the two carriages, where Collones and the others were standing.
The ones they were standing beside looked different from the others. The other ones seemed a bit wider, they didn’t have a roof nor any seats, only one in the front for the person driving it, and they looked more like squares. They were dark brown with big wheels and had four horses in front of each one.
The two that they, at least from what Miles knows, were supposed to sit in looked more round, they had a roof, windows with blinds and seats. These two also looked a lot more decorated than the other ones. They were a mix of black and red with gold details everywhere and like the other carriages, they had four horses in front of them each.
Weirdly enough, opposite of what he had seen with the horses pulling the carriages in his world when he was on vacation, these ones looked healthy. They didn’t look dangerously thin, there was even a person going around and feeding them and they all seemed happy. At least they seemed happy from what he knew, he wasn’t a horse whisperer.
Miles arrived at where the others were standing, they said hello, exchanged their names, and thereafter Collones named some of the rules for when they were at the market. Put simply, the rules were: Don’t go anywhere alone, always go in groups, because you might get lost. Remember where they parked the carriages. Make sure to be back by the carriages by ‘Do’ Fo’. And lastly, if something happens, go back to the carriage.
After Collones explained the rules, they started to get seated in the two carriages. Before Miles stepped into the carriage, he asked Collones what ‘Do’ Fo’ meant, and she simply explained that ‘Do’ Fo’ means, that when he put the bottom of his little finger on the horizon line with a stretched arm, he should be able to fit four finger between the horizon line and the bottom of the sun.
Even though Miles was still pretty confused, he just nodded as if he understood and went into the carriage. He didn’t like asking questions, since he felt like he would be considered annoying.
