His footsteps were careless walking on the water-filled bridge. The rain had soaked all his clothes and consequently his body. It was a quiet evening, the lights of the two cities joined by the bridge along with the moon revealing more to the bare eye than anyone would expect at the time. He held the umbrella in his hands, dragging it across the floor, completely oblivious to the rain pelting his head and clothes. He breathed with his mouth open, filling his face with warm breath.

''It all ends here!" he thought, laughing almost insanely at the idea of how cliché this was going to be on these days.

After a few minutes, he stopped walking abruptly and shortened his stride, staring at the city lights and the sea water below him. He let the bag fall from his shoulder and climbed up to the edge of the bridge. He felt the wind hit his face and for a few seconds he smiled with his eyes closed. He let go of the railings and let his body drift with the wind.

What do people think when they do something like that? What goes through their minds when the wind hits their face? And they know that it won't happen again? Maybe no one cares enough to stop them. Which in Dan's case was not the case.

He was hanging with his right arm outstretched upward. At the last moment, he felt a hand grab him with such force that perhaps one of his bones sewed. At that moment his cell phone that had just been in his sweatshirt pocket was sinking into the water beneath him.

''Dan!" said the man who had just rescued the boy. He grabbed Dan's forearm with both hands, and the next moment, he was almost magically on the bridge, staring at the man who had pulled him off, as if he couldn't believe what had just happened.

''What are you doing here?'' asked a startled Dan, taking a few steps back. He stumbled over the bag he had left there a moment ago, falling to the wet asphalt.

''No, you tell me!" the man replied.

His nostrils were flared as if he were about to lunge in anger at Dan.

"Mr. River, why?" his eyes looked as if they were about to fill up with tears, but they were dry at the same time.

''Why did you do that?!" he made a stop to swallow angrily and continued yelling at the man.

''It isn't supposed to be like this, life isn't like this, nobody cares enough to save anyone! so why?!"

He stood up in front of the stocky man whose long, grey-black hair was caught in a small bun. Dan looked like he could be his son, even though he was kind of gaunt at the time.

''Dan, please sit down and talk to me, I have something important to ask you! Calm down!" replied River, dumbfounded by Dan's outburst of emotion, being used to him being quiet and almost cynical.

He then made a move to hug him and Dan didn't react. He accepted the hug and stood staring blankly into space. His dry eyes filled with a few tears which quickly disappeared under his chin.

''Mr. River, it's too late."

He pushed him away and began to run toward the end of the bridge. The lights of the city and the cars looked like blurry colors of shaken photographs in his eyes, while a constant buzzing sound filled his ears.

Until a loud braking sound broke the white noise of the rumble. The wet road drenched his back with water, but why was the water so hot? Why were his eyes fixed on the sky?

''Not like this, I don't wanna die like this, not now!" he said and the last thing he 'felt' was the warm hands of a man. His eyes began to blur leaving one last image in his mind. A red traffic light and a shadow of a man grabbing his head.
