I walked into the restaurant Aaron works in with Kelvin, every eye in the restaurant was on us as we walked. This was because, we had our face covered with masks giving us the appearance of thieves. We sat down at a table by the window, a female waiter approached us. “What will you two gentlemen want,” she said. “We’ll like to be served by Aaron,” I replied. The waiter squinted and walked away returning few minutes later, “Aaron is in the toilet,” She said “Just tell me what you want and I’ll bring it to you.” “Where’s the toilet?” “Its at the back,” she pointed to a direction.Me and Kelvin got up and started walking towards the direction she pointed. “What are they looking for?” a middle aged woman behind us naked the waiter. “They're looking for Mr Aaron, ”the waiter replied. “And you told them?! What if they wanted to harm him?!” The older woman replied her, she sounded troubled. “Excuse me sir! The toilet is for staff only,” the waiter exclaimed. We paid no attention to her, we walked right into the toilet and locked the door. We sat on the wash hand basin and waited. Some minutes passed before Aaron walked out of one of the toilet, seeing us he dropped the towel in his hand and threw his hands into the air. The expression on his face was as if he saw two dead men, adding to the fact that Kelvin was pointing a gun at him. “Please don’t hurt me,” Aaron cried. “Where is Susan?” I asked. Kelvin cocked the gun in his palm. “This again? I don’t know where she is! Leave me alone already!” Aaron screamed. Kelvin pressed a finger on the trigger of the gun releasing a bullet that struck Aaron right on the laps. Aaron fell to the ground screaming in pain as he gripped his leg. Kelvin cocked the gun again pointing it straight at Aaron, he looked indifferent. I wanted to stop Kelvin, but I couldn’t because threatening Aaron was the only way we could squeeze the truth out of him. Aaronwas bright red with veins stretching all round his face as he whimpered. “Its been days since your relative went missing, you seem very relaxed about it. Why? Because you know where she is, Where is she?!” I yelled. “If you don’t say where she is, I will shoot you! In your other leg then your two arm, then I will leave you to bleed to death.” The look in Kelvin’s eye as he spoke showed that he wasn’t bluffing. He was like a cornered cat ready to attack as his last resort.
“I will... I will tell you.. please don’t shoot,” litres of sweat streamed down Aaron's face as he talked, “I buried her!” Aaron's last word struck a chord in Kelvin’s head. He pulled the trigger, as if I knew what was going to happen,I pushed Kelvin’s hand shifting the trajectory of the bullet. The bullet grazed Aaron’s ear before it hit the wall. “What did she do to you?! Why! Why! Why! What has she ever done to you or anyone?!” Tears dropped from Kelvin’s eye as he spoke, his hands was shaking as he pointed the gun back at Aaron. “If you kill this man right now with that gun, you will go to jail and we will never find Susan,” I lowered the gun with my palm as I spoke, “Look at him, he looks miserable already. Don’t ruin your life because of this man, he is not worth it.”My words had just little effect on Kelvin, he was still furious but his gun is now lowered. Two gunshots is enough to create panic in an area, I didn’t know when but I was sure that the police was upon us. I walked to Aaron, lowered myself and placed my hand on his thigh. “Where did you bury Susan?” I looked him I the eye as I asked, I didn’t want to ask him why he did that to Susan, because the more time that passes means more danger for Susan. “Number 26 deep Avenue, that is where I live. And I buried Susan in my backyard.” Aaron murmured. “Let’s go,” I beckoned on Kelvin, he followed me, we left the restaurant and called a taxi. Inside the taxi, my concern for Kelvin grew, he was burning up inside. I knew very well that for us to find Kelvin, we need to remain calm so as to think clearly. Kelvin already lost his calm completely.
The taxi stopped us in front of a brown bungalow, “this is 26,” the taxi driver said as he stretched out his hand to me to collect his pay. I paid the taxi driver and disembarked the taxi with the two shovel we bought on the way. The sun was setting, darkness was beginning to creep in slowly. The gate of the compound was open, we pushed it and strolled in. Walking into the backyard I noticed something Kelvin didn’t notice, even though it was obvious. Kelvin took one shovel from me and started digging the ground. The soil was a mixture of loam and clay, as Kelvin dug it seemed as if the soil had more clay in it. Nevertheless, digging the ground was very hard because we were in the last days of the dry season, so there water hasn’t touched the soil for months.
I dropped the shovel I was holding, then I walked to the entrance of the bungalow. I turned the door knob, the door creaked open. I walked into the house, the sitting room had a tiger skin hanging on the wall. There was droppings of rat faeces all over the floor even on the tattered brown couch that looked like it was going to bebroken by the slightest breeze. There was a wooden table by the window and a wooden chair by it. From that window I could see Kelvin digging the ground. ‘Susan went missing two days ago, if Aaron did bury Susan here there should be some rough patches somewhere. But the ground was smooth when we got here, there was no sign that anyone tilled the ground. So it is either Aaron didn’t bury Susan or he gave us the wrong address.’ I threw the mug on the table up and it landed on my palm, ‘What if he smoothened the ground? Then he did a really good job. Did he through the trouble of kidnapping Susan just to bury her alive? Why?’ I got up from my seat and walked to the tiger skin hanging on the wall, I ran my fingers through it.
None of this was making sense, the only thing I was sure of was, if Aaron did bury Susan then she’d be dead by now. I had to make a choice, either I join Kelvin and keep digging and eventually dig out Susan’s dead body, or I find Aaron and threaten him once more. I walked into every room in the bungalow, they were all empty except one room that had a picture hanging on the wall and a metallic bed on the floor. The picture was in black and white, I took the picture from the wall and sat on the bed.In the picture was a man woman, ‘there are no clothes here!’ The thought struck through my head like lightning. ‘There is nobody living here, Aaron lied to us!’ I walked back into the sitting room, I already had all the answers I need. Looking out the window, Kelvin was still digging, he already dug three different holes, each about four feet in. I took out my phone, the time was five minutes past eight. Darkness already encroached, the full moon gave a little illumination to the night. ‘I can’t tell Kelvin, he might kill Moses this time.” I thought to myself. Kelvin was already a danger to others and himself. I looked out the window again, Kelvin wiped the sweat off his face with the back of his palm. I had to make a decision fast, it’s either I tell Kelvin what I discovered or I don’t.
