Writing Music

Aug 27, 2023

It was late at night and Satoru was still in the studio writing music. They had a new album that was due to come out within the month. All the instrumentals were complete, all that had to be done were the lyrics and vocals.

But for some reason, Satoru just couldn’t come up with anything that matched the tone of their songs.

He held his paper close to his face and just stared blankly at it. Nothing was coming to mind. This never usually happened to him, normally the words would just be flowing from his brain and onto the paper like it was magic, but this time around nothing was happening.

Miyuki had told him that it was most likely a slump, but Satoru didn’t want to believe that. He knew he had a few mental issues, but it never bothered him when it came to creating music.

It bothered him now that it was becoming an issue. He just wanted to get it done, but still nothing happened. He just sat with the paper still in hand, a little crumpled up since he had been gripping it, and listened to the ticking of the clock.

After sitting like that for about another hour, he heard footsteps coming from the stairs. He immediately recognized them to be Miyuki’s. Satoru figured that Miyuki would be coming down in order to check up on him since Satoru promised that he’d go to bed after an hour, but here it’s been three hours since then.

Miyuki walked into the room and sat down beside Satoru. At first he didn’t say anything and just sat beside him, but after a little while he spoke.

“Are you still having trouble writing the lyrics?” Miyuki asked, looking at Satoru.

Satoru still didn’t want to admit it, but he knew that there was nothing he could hide from Miyuki, for Miyuki knew him better than Satoru knew himself.

Satoru surrendered and just nodded his head slowly. “I don’t know what’s wrong with me. Usually I can write stuff without much thought, but now it’s all so hard and I don’t understand why,” he said and scratched at his head with his free hand

Miyuki sighed and shook his head, “I know you don’t like leaving things to be finished later, but why don’t we go to bed?” he suggested and began to stand up, “you won’t be making progress the longer you sit here and stare at that page. So why not get some sleep and refresh your brain?”

Satoru knew that if he put up a fight it’d be useless because Miyuki would just drag him up to bed anyways.

Satoru just stood up with a sigh and set the piece of paper down on the desk before heading upstairs to his and Miyuki’s shared room.

Miyuki followed him and laid down on their bed then looked to Satoru, “wanna talk?”

Satoru shook his head and went to sit down on the chair located by the window. He cracked it open a little and took out his pack of cigarettes and lit one up. Miyuki didn’t like it when he smoked, so he usually reprimanded him. But this time Miyuki let it go since Satoru seemed to be having a tough time.

Satoru was fully aware that smoking was not a good coping mechanism, so he tried to stop with Miyuki’s help. But when he felt really overwhelmed or depressed he’d smoke.

He sat and looked out the window, letting himself relax with the fresh air. As he sat there, his racing mind was starting to slow down and he felt himself getting tired.

Satoru let out a sigh and put out his cigarette before crawling into bed beside Miyuki.

“Goodnight…” Satoru whispered as he drifted off to sleep.
