Adventures With Shae (Short Story Collection)

Forest

Forest

Sep 14, 2023

“Drip, Drip, Drip, Drip” goes the sound of the water as it hits the ground. Whispers crowding the room of the interior building. Sounds and sounds all around as if it means anything. Just then a ring sound appears as the students go back to their seats. I, on the other hand, just look outside at the rain pouring while listening to some music in my headphones. The teacher comes in and as usual is very moody. Today was the day she decided to tell my class about the trip we will be having tomorrow and who we will be paired with, or at least, who do you want to pair with. I am the lonely girl in my class. I am not much of a socializing person. I rather keep everything to myself and mind my own business. Sometimes it makes me the target of bullying but I actually don’t care. Why should I? It's only high school, nothing to worry about anyways. Just keep your head where it needs to be, in the books. Study as hard as you can and get top of your class. That was my goal and the mindset I was put towards as a kid. I am top of my class and of the school. You would think it’s a good thing, well it is, if you want to get into the best universities ever but you also have people pushing you around and telling you to do their homework for them. I come back into reality as I hear my name being called. “Rel, I must speak with you after class,” my teacher says as she looks at me. I nod to show her that I understand. 10 minutes go by and the class is finally empty with only my teacher and I inside. Not too much was said, only the fact that although it's a trip, I need to bring my camera to take pictures for the school. As the top student in your class and in the school, it can be hard. I have contributed to many things this school has to offer. I am the leader of the photography club, co-captain of the lab genetics club, one of the leaders of the nature protection club, one of the leaders in the student council, I am one of the captains for the dance and music club. It can be hard at times but I take these opportunities that come my way and make it into something I can work with even if it may be something small. That day, I prepared my belongings and my other necessities. The camera was all set in its case with the battery for it, in case it dies. The next day arrives as everyone is at school early. Today was also a rainy and cloudy day. Nothing out of the blue. I was waiting in the back of the line as I saw students have the person they will pair up with. Unfortunately, I don’t have anyone I can pair up with but it's fine, it's something you can get used to when you haven't had friends for a while. The line gets shorter and shorter until I get to the entrance of the bus. The teacher looks at me and proceeds to hand sign me to go in. She knows me well on how I never get a partner or even pair up with anyone. I go inside the bus, walk all the way to the back row. Luckily no one was there so I proceeded to take a seat with some of my belongings, take out my phone, put my headphones on, and play music while grabbing my hood and pulling it up on my head. Soon enough everyone is on the bus. I didn't pay too much attention but there was like a student who did not have a partner to pair up with and my teacher decided to tell the student to go sit next to me and that we would be paired up. I didn't see when he came to me as I was just looking outside the window. I was so deep in my thoughts that I didn't even feel his presence. Soon enough we get to the place we are staying at. I pull the headphone off one of my ears as I come to notice that there is someone's presence next to me. I look slightly as I see someone indeed sitting next to me. Did I not see him here, I ask myself as I can't even think straight. I decided to push it away as the teacher was speaking, after all the lectures, I grabbed my belongings and was the last one off the bus. I couldn't say anything because the landscape of the forest was just so beautiful. Some time passes by and the boy who was sitting next to me on the bus approaches me. He informed me that me and him were paired up by the teachers since we didn’t have partners at the beginning. After that he just walks away. Later on in the day, my teacher lets us go out and explore. I bet some of the students are going to get lost and end up crying like some little babies. Of course they let people either go with a partner or a group. You can’t really go all alone since that would be a danger. I still wanted to go out but had no one to go with. My so-called partner was nowhere to be found, he probably found some other people to go out in the forest. I was ready with everything I needed yet I could not go. I just walk around without noticing someone's presence around me. I was so emotional that I literally kicked the dumpster that is outside and screamed in frustration. Soon I get scared as I see someone at the corner of my eye. I look straight at them and see the boy who is partnered with me. All he does is stare at me and proceeds to tell me, “let me guess, have no friends or people to go with to the forest. Is that why you are so angry, shortie.” I look at him so intensely after he calls me shortie, like what. I decided to say, “First, I'm not short. Second, I don't have friends and I don't really care but why can't these teachers just let me go alone? I'm always alone, what is the difference.” All my anger is just coming out at one time, it's actually really refreshing. The boy just looks at me and proceeds to grab my hand and take me somewhere with no explanations whatsoever. We pass a teacher and greet them as they continue to walk away. He just brings me in the directions of the forest, like deep in the forest. We meet with some of his friends and start to walk around. The forest was silent and all you could hear was the animals around, our footsteps and some of his friends who are being loud. I just take my camera out and start to take pictures. The boy was so curious about what I was doing so me and him would talk a little. I'm not one to talk much but he became a little bit of a blabber mouth which I didn't mind. In the forest, you could see how tall the trees were, how the trail led us through it and hearing or seeing the animals around this nature. Some trees were green, some had flowers, others had yellow leaves on them and some trees didn't grow any leaves at all. It was such a beautiful place to be at. Soon enough we met with a lake and chilled there for a while since we have been walking for some time already. I decided to take some pictures of the lake while they are talking to each other. I took many pictures and they are amazing. I feel like some photos are missing, like if I need to take a specific picture. I think for a while and notice that the boys are still talking to each other without noticing that I left the group so I take my camera, zoom in and take some pictures of them. After that, I check them and they are amazing so I put my camera on record for the journey back to camp and it will give people who see the schools page an idea of what type of trips our school does and how beautiful it can be. Of course I didn't tell those troublemakers about it but I could care less. Yes I am with all these troublemakers, they are the troublemakers of the school. I've heard everyone say that they are afraid of them which makes me wonder why because they are actually really fun to be around. I came back and they got scared because I came out of nowhere but I gave them a sign, like saying, “Hey we need to go back. It's getting late.” They understood and we started to head back to camp. They are just having fun as we go through the trees of the forest once more. Before we went to the big main trail to go back to camp, we came across some animals or at least something following and seeing us carefully. I have no idea what it was but I decided to check it out and it was a wolf jumping out of a bush. I decided to walk up to it although the boys tried to pull me back. I sat down and signaled the wolf to come towards me. Luckily it listened to me because it had some type of rap from a bag or something stuck on its paws and leg. It let me help it. It was a black fur colored wolf with red eyes, the reddest eyes I have ever seen. After all that, I let the wolf leave and we headed back to the camp after all that. In the end, I took pictures of the little trouble makers later that night at the fireplace and at the other part of camp. It was actually fun hanging with them and of course seeing the forest. The forest has so much to offer yet humans like to pollute it and never give it a break. If only they could open their eyes and see how important nature can be for human society. That's what I learned a long time ago and that is what I want to share with others. That is the goal I will pursue as my future job and I will make sure I get there, even if I have to work ten times as hard to do it. The world needs change and I'm willing to try, no I'm willing to do it and make that change for the better.
