It was turning into the Eve of the next day, they sky turning mainly red washed together with pink, violet and yellow. As Gareicht and Ellava sat down to eat, a conversation between them began.
"Do you have any more worries you'd like to share?"
"I would like to go out and see the world. I'd love to see the sea close-up, to see the environment of people and animals, but until that barrier is removed...or I can bypass it...I'm afraid of being here for forever."
"Did me being in the navy give you an interest in the sea?" Gareicht asked.
"Not exactly, but it did rekindle it." She corrected, "I've let you know some of my worries--as my confidant, let me here some of yours."
He smiled, "Where to begin...?" He began to mess with the food on his plate, "Other than my curse...I'm worried about my sister."
"You have a sister?" She inquired.
"Yeah, she's a few years younger, she was fun--a bit stubborn, smart, athletic, and a bit sassy--actually who am I kidding, she's very sassy."
"Was?"
"...When I first received this curse, my sister was injured, there's a very low chance of her waking up but I hope she does. I'm her brother...I should've been there to protect her...but I wasn't."
"You shouldn't blame yourself, no one could be at two places at once."
"There's more though," He took a deep breath, "The one who gave me this curse and the one that injured my sister was none other than my father," He paused briefly and then continued, "I came home from passing my naval exam, only to have a sea of corpses waiting for me in my hometown, once I got home... My mother was in a pool of her own blood, my sister was barely hanging on--when I saw my father's blood-stained face telling me I'd embody the curse next, I lost it and in that grief and anger he was slain by me."
I stepped on a landmine, She thought.
She reached out her hand to him, "I'm sorry that that happened, and I hope that your sister recovers."
"Thanks," He smiled weakly, "I hope she does too."
"May I ask what her name is?"
"It's Ashelia."
"What a pretty name.”
"In my language, it means dusk sky." He was quite fortunate that other than his territory's language, there was also a universal language to learn, if he didn't have that then he wouldn't be able to communicate with Ellava at all.
"It's a lot like the sky right now, I guess that means she's watching over you." She chose her words carefully, trying to put him at ease and he half-heartedly smiled.
"I wouldn't be surprised if you were right, after the whole, erm, incident went down. I was just angry at everything...but I feel like she visited me in a dream and told me to snap out of it and calm down." He snorted, he couldn't remember if the dream was real or not, but even if it wasn't it was a very in-character thing for his sister to do.
"I see, she sounds like a good sister," Ellava paused, "Gareicht, it's not a worry or anything but would you tell me about the sea?"
"The sea? Oh right--you were talking about it earlier." He paused to think of an experience to share, "Have you heard of a Krakegorma before?"
"Krakegorma?" She blinked.
"They're ginormous octopi (krake) and squid (gorma) that attack and capsize ships. The naval ship I'm apart of was once attacked by one."
"How did you guys escape?" Her eyes invested in his story, her upper body jolting up and she moved closer to him, already invested.
"Our ship is designated to search for suspicious ships, and rescue shipwrecked victims. So while our ship has a few weapons, it's not a weapon factory like some might believe, it's not necessary since we're currently not at war--and hopefully that doesn't happen during my lifetime. Anyway, so it started this one night, it was the calm before the storm. You could just smell the brewing storm in the air. While we were prepping for the storm one of the workers in the control panel room noticed something on our sonar/radar equipment--"
"Sonar? Radar?"
"You've never heard of them before?"
She shook her head.
"It's equipment that picks up distinct sounds, whether it being a submarine or a large marine animal, and measures its distance from us."
Once he saw her gleaming eyes again, "Save all the questions for after the story."
"So we picked up something on our sonar/radar, and it was coming closer and closer to us. When we saw one of its tentacles shoot out of the raging sea and start to wrap around us. We tried our ship canons, but nothing seemed to get the Krakegorma off of us. Then we got this sudden idea. Marine life dislike fire especially, so we took some of our ships fuel and set the tentacle aflame. It released its grip and went deep underwater. We sped as fast as we could to get away from it. Fortunately we were able to send out an SOS and have another naval fleet share its fuel with us."
"You've never encountered another one after that?"
He scratched his cheek, "Not that I'm aware of, unless the ship crossed paths with it while I'm on leave."
"So...what's a submarine?"
"It's basically a ship that can dive deep underwater. It's shape is like a big capsule."
"Have you run into any other sea monsters?"
"No, but there's more than Krakegorma out there, there're Sirens--who's songs capture the hearts of men to throw themselves overboard to copulate with the sirens and then they get devoured. Long sea-serpents called water hydra, enormous sharks called Migalovan, who normally live in the deep sea so seeing them at the surface is extremely rare, to the point where they are thought to be extinct. But their teeth are so sharp and wide they can pierce through the toughest of metals. Just to name a few."
"Wow the Migalovan sounds especially terrifying."
"It's true if we become its target there'll be nothing left of us, but there have been cases of it incidentally saving naval fleets from Krakegorma. We theorize that ships are used as bait to let its prey--the Krakegorma's guard down. It's showed that Migalovan's are pretty smart, why would it kill its bait, it'd be harder to catch its prey."
"Woah, that's still kind of terrifying though."
"Does it...make you scared of the sea?" Gareicht frowned.
"No...just a bit more cautious of it?"
"It's good to be cautious, you could be like that a little more here. If you're interested I'll try to get a book about the sea monsters."
"I, I don't want to lose my faith in people, so being suspicious of people is something I can't do, even if it ends up hurting me in the end, and if you can find one, I do think it'd be an interesting read but you need not go out of your way to find one."
She's too pure-hearted and naive. Gareicht thought.
"In the event that you can leave this place, would you like to visit a human museum then? They actually have teeth from Migalovan's that have shed. They have other artifacts there too, that you might be interested in?"
"I've never been to one before, that sounds interesting."
It'd be fun to see her face once she sees how big one of the teeth are, and seeing her reactions to things she's never known about before would be fun too. Gareicht thought.
Soon the dusk sky turned dark, only a pale illumination from a few stars and a cloud-casted moon lit through it.
He was tired, he didn't do anything physically exerting by much, but it was still exhausting for some reason today. They both said good night and returned to their rooms. Gareicht stared at his ceiling as his eyes turned hazy and they finally shut.
