It was a little after midnight when Moon gave up on trying to sleep. The silence of the hospital was calming to her ears, after the last days where she heard nothing but the sickening voice of Archie, then Caelan. She started paying attention to her own breathing as she stared at the ceiling. Looking at either a blank wall or a blank ceiling became her way of meditating, of putting her mind in order before coming back to the real world, as it was getting messier each day.
She felt a light pressure on her chest as a dark smoke got out of her and, as usual, Noira was out. Strangely, this time, the demon did nothing but lean on the window frame, staring at the outside.
Moon felt so confused.
So lost of what to do next.
A tug on her finger made her raise her hand as she looked at the vibrant red color of the thread that was connecting the two of them.
“What do you think?”, she asked so softly that Noira was confused for a moment.
“About what?”
“This.”, she pointed to her right hand.
“You can’t break it.”
“Earlier, when I was being operated… Were you talking to someone or was just the anesthesia in my mind?
“I was talking to the Sophus.”, Noira sighed, leaving behind the street view and focusing on Moon, while she crossed her arms.
“Sophus? So they do exist?”
“Yes. They always come with messages from the Goddess. They just told me that you couldn’t die, as you haven't completed your purpose yet, which, I suspect, it’ll be achieved together with… him.”
“Ugh, fuck…”, Moon whined, resting her arm over her eyes. “I shouldn’t have messed with Archie that night…”
“It wouldn’t matter… All paths lead to him…”
Moon chuckled as she shook her head.
Soon, the silence was back again, with nothing but their low breaths on the room. So quiet that they could hear the cars out on the street.
Then footsteps echoed on the corridor just outside.
“Well, now it’s the time to follow the advice of that old man… As I do not want to witness any make out session between you two.”, with that, Noira slowly disappeared back into Moon’s body and the girl felt how the demon's energy was radiating through her body.
A few seconds later, while she was sitting up straight in the bed, the door opened. Immediately she turned her head towards it.
“Hey… Can I…?”, Gray half asks, hesitating at the door.
“Be my guest.”, Moon nonchalantly says, covering herself with the blanket, as she suddenly feels cold.
Gray gets in, closes the door, but stays still at the foot of the bed. It’s clear to Moon how he's battling with himself. The man is thinking hard of what to say, as a mix of emotions runs through his mind, leaving him on the edge of losing it.
“About earlier… When I hesitated…”
“You were losing control. You were giving in to the thirst, right?”
“I… I wouldn’t hurt you, I can promise you that.”, Gray tried hard to explain but was losing his words.
“I know. But there’s no guarantee that you will never try… We both know how strong the thirst can get. Besides, let’s be honest here… We don’t love each other. Love cannot be forced. And love, in its pure essence, it’s something hard to find. Most couples are together based solely on the fact that they are attracted to each other because of this… thread.”
“If the Goddess connects two souls with the red thread, she knows what she’s doing. These couples do love each other… Maybe it’s just you that can’t see it.”, Gray retorts.
“Ok. Forget everything that has happened so far… Forget that you’re a vampire and that I’m a vanik. Focus on who we are, personality-wise. Do you really think you’d be able to love me?”, Moon seriously asks.
Gray keeps quiet.
He doesn’t have an answer to that. He asked himself many times if he would ever find his mate. To his surprise, it was a witch, a vanik. Someone from a race with a bloody history with his own kind. Someone that defied his authority, who couldn’t care less about his status.
“See? There goes your answer.”, Moon sighed deeply. “Let’s be honest, Gray, it won’t work no matter what.”
“We can still try…”
“Sorry, but my answer is still no. Right now, my priority is to make sure that my brother is safe. And I do own a lot to alpha Brock, so, if he needs my help with what's coming, I’ll help. But after that…”
“No, no, no…”, Gray shook his head, getting up and then pacing back and forth. “I won’t… can’t let you leave. I won’t accept your rejection. Don’t even try.”
Moon looked at him, emotionlessly, as she uttered some words.
“Hypnos, pacem aliquam et tranquillitatem huc adfer.…”
“Don’t you dare use your magic with me!”, Gray growled, loudly.
“...noli oblivisci eum in Lethaum amnem ducere et in illis aquis ingerere...…”
“I said stop!”, Gray growled once more, eyes red, as he unconsciously put his fingers on her throat, pressing it gently.
She didn’t stop, not feeling one bit scared.
“...evanescat imago mea ab eius memoria.”
As she uttered the last word, a thin and shiny white light surrounded Gray’s body, making him struggle with all his strength, unsuccessfully. In just a few seconds, a sweet lullaby could be heard and, soon, his body dropped to the ground, unconscious.
“Noira, take him back to his room, please.”
