The ride to the market took about an hour, though it didn’t feel like such a long time for Miles, since he had quite some interesting conversations with Collones and the other servants.
As Miles stepped out of the carriage, he glanced around him, stunned by the tons upon tons of booths next to a big road that seemed to be going on forever, with hundreds of smaller roads, all leading to different places.
As he stood there kind of dumbfounded, Collones briefly explained the rules again, and they wandered into the sea of people.
They had been there for about two hours. At the moment, they were looking at candles, when Miles noticed that the sound of people talking quickly turned very hushed as they all stepped to the side. He looked to where the others were looking.
There was a tall-looking guy, riding a completely black horse. He clearly stood out with his dark clothes and tall laced up boots with red details, and the slight armour around his chest and shoulders. Not to mention the sword and daggers by his hip. The hood helped hide the parts of the head that the mask wasn’t big enough to cover.
As the man came closer to where Miles and the others were standing, he started to look more around, as if he was confused.
He came to a stop when he was standing right next to Miles. Their eyes immediately locked, and Miles felt as if the man’s dark blue eyes were piercing right through his soul. The man's eyes felt cold and distant. It sent a chill down Miles’ spine.
After what felt like forever, the man hesitantly broke the eye contact, and slowly continued down the road, looking back a few times.
When Miles finally snapped out of the trance he had found himself in, he could hear people whispering and murmuring around him, looking at him with a bit of fear and confusion in their eyes, though he didn’t pay the stares much attention.
He looked back at the man, who was now a couple metres away. They locked eyes again, but it didn’t last even nearly as long this time, as Collones grabbed Miles’ arm and pulled him behind the booth, to seemingly interrogate him. But, weirdly enough, Miles, for some reason, couldn’t take his eyes off of the man, and even when Collones finally made him look at her, he couldn’t hear a word she said. Well, he could hear that she was talking, but he could make out a single word, as his mind was still laser-focused on the masked man.
