"Fine. I will let you see her.", the lady quietly and annoyedly said as she led John behind the counter and up some stairs. They passed by some rooms with questionable noises coming from them, until eventually, they got to a tall gothic door at the end of the hallway. "This is her room?", he asked. The girl simply nodded, stepping back like she was scared. He then took a deep breath before heading into the room. He looked around the room before staring straight ahead at a made-up woman at the end of the room, lounging on a couch with a cigarette. She had blood-soaked hands and a girl's mangled body on the floor. The woman on the couch motioned the body to leave, so she got up and did, making John jerk back with disgust.
"Chto vam nuzhno?", the woman purred. "English, woman. I'm rusty.". The woman sneered before saying "Why you come to me?". John walked closer to her, trying to avoid the slippery blood. "Why is there blood on the floor, Sokolova?". Her eye twitched, though her eyelids stayed open, making him realize she wore a lifelike mask. He took time to look at her. The skin on her body was a normal color, but her face was white as snow, with blue eyeshadow, red lipstick, and a beauty mark under her right eye. Her hair was bobbed with bangs that barely reached her thin, drag queen-esque eyebrows. Her outfit consisted of a sapphire-blue bubble hem dress and matching pumps. Based on the nature of her domain, this seemed to be her casual attire. She licked some blood from her hand, seeming to thoroughly enjoy the metallic flavor.
"You are one sick puppy, you know that?", John said. "So you are judging me?", she asked. "Intensely, yes.", he responded. "Shhh... Your face is speaking.", she purred. "That makes no fuckin' sense.", he said, doing a sarcastic purr back to her. "It doesn't have to make sense.", she said back, raising her voice slightly. She sat him down before asking "I presume you already know my name, but I will introduce myself. I am Mimi Sokolova. Why have you come to see me?".
"Well, Miss Dominatrix, I have a book that Edward Cullen told me to bring to you.", he said. "Edward? I know not of any Edward Cullens.", she responded. "Jesus, lady. Why do you take nicknames so seriously? It's Dorien.". Mimi's mask crumpled near her mouth, giving John the impression she was smiling. "Ah. The boy with the crow, eh?". John raised his eyebrow, saying "The little crow you speak of's reaction to your name doesn't give me a great first impression of you.". Mimi moved closer to him, saying "Come now... I'm not all bad anymore. I've changed my ways.". John chuckled, responding "If you changed your ways, would you be drinking someone's blood when I walked in?". Her mask crinkled again, eyes widening as she said, "I have to quench my thirst. By the way... You never told me your name.". "We'll save that for another time, Miss Dominatrix.".
"John Doe is a laid-off detective in the year 3006, who finds the only book left in existence. The creator of this book cursed whoever would read it, with great responsibility. The reason is unknown, but it is widely believed that the writer was a being millions of years old that was angry at the world for moving past books, so they cursed the book, calling it the Crying Story. The curse is that whoever reads the book is then given the responsibility of protecting it from the demons inside. There are seven entities in it, and in the wrong hands, they could wreak havoc on the entire world. The most dangerous entity in the book is called The Joyous Day. Those who go to it for guidance have never returned. John Doe is given this responsibility and understands the weight of it. The fate of the world is in his hands." All these details and more are in Julian Ferguson's latest fifth novel, "John Doe: Detective Extraordinaire".
