The necklace of salvation

Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Sep 22, 2023

Despite his exhaustion, Jack managed to keep up with the tasks at hand. He and Sancho worked efficiently, measuring and cutting the wood with precision. As they worked, Sancho kept a watchful eye on Jack, making sure he didn't push himself too hard.

"You sure you're not pushing yourself too hard, Jack?" Sancho asked as they finished up the last order.

Jack smiled wearily, feeling the rough texture of the wood in his hands. "I'm good. Just need some coffee."

As they began sorting through the piles of lumber, Sancho noticed something different about Jack's behavior. He seemed distant and lacked his usual level of concentration, something Sancho had never seen before.

Concerned for his friend, Sancho suspected that Jack was hiding something from him, but he remained silent, remembering the promise he had made to never bring up the nightmare that Jack had experienced. As the day wore on, Jack's tiredness became more apparent. Even during their breaks, Jack didn't sleep as usual, and Sancho knew why.

After a while, Jack's exhaustion began to show, and he started making mistakes while working.

"Hey man, you're not looking so good. Are you sure you're okay?" Sancho asked, noticing Jack's tired demeanor.

"I'm fine, just a little tired," Jack replied, feeling the roughness of the wood against his skin.

"No, you're not. You're making mistakes, and that's not like you," Sancho said, concerned.

"I can push through it," Jack insisted, trying to hide his exhaustion.

Sancho shook his head. "No, you can't. You need to go home and rest."

Jack was reluctant at first. "I have to finish this order by tonight."

"I'll finish it. You go home and rest," Sancho said firmly, knowing that Jack needed to take care of himself.

"But the wood feels so good in my hands," Jack joked weakly, trying to hide his fatigue.

Sancho laughed. "It'll still be here when you get back. But if you don't leave now, I'll tell Christina how hard you've been pushing yourself."

Jack sighed. "Alright, fine. I'll go home and rest."

Sancho clapped him on the back. "That's the spirit. Take care of yourself, man."

As Jack left the dusty workshop, Sancho was left alone with his turbulent thoughts. The stale air mixed with sawdust had not done his senses any good, but the sweet fragrance of the nearby blooming flowers managed to soothe his mind. He couldn't help but wonder what was really going on with his friend Jack. Was it his recent nightmares that had him troubled? Or was it something more personal that Jack was keeping to himself?

With a deep breath, Sancho closed the heavy wooden door, and the sound echoed in the silence of the deserted workshop. He could feel the warmth of the late afternoon sun on his skin, and beads of sweat formed on his forehead, which he wiped off with the back of his hand. As he stepped out into the bustling village, he squinted from the brightness of the sunlight, and the distant hum of voices filled his ears.

Sancho made his way north of the village, following the winding path that led to Christina's bustling workplace. He passed by vendors selling fresh bread, pastries, and other delicacies, the aroma of which filled the air, making his stomach grumble with hunger.

Finally, he arrived at the front of Cristina's shop, and she looked up from her work, surprised by Sancho's presence. The sunshine made her hair glow like gold, and Sancho noticed the green specks in her eyes. "Hi Christina, how are you?" Sancho asked.

"Sancho! But what are you doing here, aren't you supposed to be with Jack at work?" Christina asked, her brow furrowed in confusion.

Sancho chuckled, "Yes, I am. But Jack complained of a throbbing tooth, and I asked him to go home to rest. I thought I would stop by here and see if you knew anything about his recent behavior."

Christina nodded, and Sancho could see the concern in her eyes, "Jack complained of pain in his tooth, but it wasn't yesterday. We were together, and he didn't tell me he was having any trouble with his tooth. I'll have to go later to check on him."

Sancho's heart sank at her words, knowing that Jack's nightmare must have been weighing heavily on his mind. A sense of worry crept over him, but he kept his expression neutral and said nothing, not wanting to reveal the truth to Christina.

During their conversation, a young man who looked like he was in his late twenties walked past the shop. He exuded an aura of affluence and sophistication, with his tailored suit that hugged his athletic frame perfectly. His skin was as dark as the night sky, and his thick, black hair was combed immaculately.

The man stopped in front of Christina's shop, and Sancho could tell that Christina noticed him too. The man's confident demeanor and charisma were hard to ignore. He flashed a smile at Christina, who smiled back politely, and Sancho could see her eyes glinting in the sunlight. "May I help you?" Christina asked, gesturing to the baskets of fruit on display.

The young man's voice was as deep as the nearby river, and it flowed smoothly like honey pouring from a jar. "Yes, please. I'll take a kilogram of apples and a kilogram of oranges, if you don't mind," he said, his words wrapping Christina's senses like a warm blanket.

Christina quickly weighed out the fruit, the scent of the juicy apples and oranges filling her nostrils as she handed them over. She tried to be polite, but not overly friendly, as the young man's eyes lingered on her for a little too long. She couldn't help but feel the intensity of his gaze, causing her to wonder if he had an ulterior motive.

As the young man left, Christina watched him go, her eyes following his every movement. She noticed the way his broad shoulders swayed with each step, and how his dark hair danced in the gentle breeze. However, something about his demeanor made her feel uneasy, like an invisible weight pressing down on her chest.

Turning back to Sancho, Christina hoped to distract herself from the strange encounter. She noticed the way the sunlight danced across Sancho's face, casting a warm glow on his features. As they chatted, Christina kept a watchful eye on the young man, who lingered nearby, watching their every move.

Christina couldn't help but feel a little nervous as Sancho left and the young man approached him. "Excuse me, I am Lauri, I am new in the village and I need help to navigate through it," Lauri said, his voice as smooth as the river they stood beside.

"Can I help you with something?" Sancho asked, his eyes darting warily to Lauri.

Lauri smiled, his pearly whites glinting in the sunlight. "I'm looking to rent a house in the area. Do you know of any available?"

Sancho nodded, his face relaxing slightly. "There are a few people who rent out their homes. I can take you to see one if you like."

Lauri thanked him, and the two of them set off down the street together. Christina watched them go, feeling a little relieved that the strange encounter was over. She couldn't shake off the uneasiness that had settled deep within her, like a rock that wouldn't budge.

Lauri and Sancho strolled down the dusty village road, the hot sun beating down on them like a relentless hammer. The heat was oppressive, and beads of sweat trickled down Lauri's forehead, causing him to wipe it off with the back of his hand. Lauri looked around, taking in the sights and sounds of the village. The market was bustling with people, and the smell of fresh produce wafted through the air, mingling with the sharp tang of sweat and dust.

As they walked, Lauri could feel his curiosity building up inside him, and he turned to Sancho. "Do you know that girl who works in the shop that sells grains and vegetables?" he asked, his voice filled with awe.

Sancho smiled and nodded. "Yes, I know her. Her name is Christina," he said, his voice tinged with a hint of admiration.

Lauri's eyes widened, and he rubbed his hair nervously. "She's so beautiful, I couldn't take my eyes off her. I don't know what happened to me when I first saw her," he said, his words tumbling out like a gushing river.

Sancho chuckled and patted Lauri's shoulder. "Be careful, my friend. She's been in love with someone else since she was a child. Don't let your dreams take you away," he warned, his voice filled with concern.

Lauri nodded and laughed it off. "I understand, but a man can still appreciate beauty, can't he?" he said, his voice filled with playful banter.

As they continued down the road, the sun beat down on them relentlessly, casting long shadows across the dusty streets. Sancho stopped in front of a house and knocked on the door. A man appeared, and Sancho explained that Lauri was looking for a place to rent. The man agreed, and Lauri thanked Sancho for his help, his gratitude flowing out like a soothing river.

"Thank you, Sancho, I really appreciate it," he said, his voice filled with genuine warmth.

Sancho waved it off. "It's no trouble at all. If you ever need anything, just ask around for Jack and Sancho's workshop. We'll be happy to help," he said, his voice filled with a sense of camaraderie.

After their brief conversation, Sancho left for the workshop to complete his work. The sun was high in the sky, casting long shadows across the empty streets. The workshop was alive with the sound of saws and hammers, as Sancho worked diligently to finish his tasks. The sound of wood being cut and the smell of fresh sawdust filled the air, creating a symphony of sounds and scents.
