Jason Rim.
His famous webnovels turned books "Blessings From Above", and "The Star That Grew Thorns" are centered in the perspective of the main leads. The Star That Grew Thorns is from the female lead's perspective, while Blessings From Above is in the male lead's; both describing their upbringing and how their lives were like.
This is how the famous novel "Blessings From Above" is described.
The Kingdom of Therovia became the Vekmios Empire after losing in a thirty-five year long war. The Emperor wanted control over the Nobles who were not yet loyal, and had made a decree stating that the oldest child from every faction shall enter the Imperial Army.
"One child from each household, between the ages of eighteen and twenty-three, must be enlisted and pledge their loyalty to the Imperial Family. Regardless of gender! All who oppose, evade, and or desert their duty shall be stripped of their title, and will be sentenced to death alongside their families!" The land ruled by the Imperial Family who controlled it with an iron grasp, was often called...the Kingdom of Tyrants.
The irony in this though, was the Emperor having been murdered by the Crown Prince a year after the war, just to take the throne for himself as he wanted to control the people with a tighter leash.
When he became Emperor, his Empress had birthed the Crown Prince, with the Crown Princess being born five years later. The only thing the Emperor and Empress didn't foresee was for his bastard son –the son of a consort who the Emperor couldn't bother to remember– to have been born, and within two years of the Crown Prince’s birth no less.
The Emperor was furious that a mere consort had given him a child he did not want, and would plan a way to execute him when the Nobles of the Empire intervened.
"Having as many children as he wants should not matter, since his first born son would become Emperor one day regardless."
"I agree! Since he was born from Her Majesty the Empress, it is impossible to think there would be a different Crown Prince." The Nobles ultimately saved the boy with the silent agreement to use him, in order to overthrow the current Tyrant Emperor when he grew up.
To save face in the commotion, the Emperor withdrew his initial idea and instead decided to shun the child and threw him to the Imperial Knights, but the mother did not meet the same fate. She was killed a week after the child's birth, for insulting the members of the Royal Family. The Commanding Officer took pity on the child, raising him as his own until the day the Commander had been killed by monsters on the battlefield, just before the Half-Prince turned eighteen.
Because the Half-Prince was not acknowledged by the Royal Family as a Royal, the Emperor devised a plan to make the Half-Prince swear his loyalty so he couldn't aim for the throne that was meant for his son.
On the day the Half-Prince turned eighteen, the Emperor gave him the title of Commander.
This wasn't to show goodwill contrary to what the Emperor had said, it was to restrict the Half-Prince more than he already was. When the Half-Prince knelt and bowed, the Emperor's eyes glimmered with contempt as the Half-Prince pledged his loyalty to the Crown.
After he had pledged his loyalty, the Half-Prince was ordered to go on a four-year long Campaign away from the Empire, to deal with the sudden uprising of monsters from a small territory within the Empire.
Unaware just how terrible of an idea that was.
A year into the Campaign and an all-out war between the Devildom –who had sent assassins to the Emperor– and the Empire began. Countless lives were lost on both sides for three agonizing years, both their armies dwindling until there were only a handful left.
During the last year, the war was finally over.
The Empire was under siege by the enemy Commander and a few of his remaining soldiers of the Devildom, as a last desperate attempt. Only they witnessed the Imperial Army protecting the Empire were not as skilled as those they had faced on the battlefield they fled from. The Half-Prince was approaching fast behind the enemy Commander, but had lost a bit of time due to an unexpected ambush.
Once the matter was dealt with, the Half-Prince and a little more than a quarter of his squadron, decimated the remaining forces that infiltrated the streets of the Empire. The Half-Prince alone headed towards the Imperial Palace after ordering his men to take care of the civilians. Before he had even stepped foot inside, he saw fresh corpses on the ground as the stench of blood stained the air.
He stopped a frightened maid who told him where the Imperial Family were and ran away shortly afterwards. He made haste towards the Imperial Garden, but when he approached his steps ceased mid-step; watching the Imperial Princess covered with skin-stained blood, running towards the Half-Prince after having made eye-contact with him.
Before he could even get near the Princess who ran with another person close behind, the enemy Commander had sliced the Princess' head clean off.
The person who was running with the Princess stopped and screamed from shock as blood began to splatter on them. The Half-Prince couldn’t stand by and watch the stranger meet the same fate as the Princess, so he intervened without much thought, cutting the creature's hand off and using the surprised encounter to give the enemy Commander a swift end.
But he stopped. As soon as the person behind him screamed for him to, the sword's sharpened blade –despite the countless battles he had fought in– just barely stopped and hovered at the enemy’s neck; drawing a bit of blood onto the metal as it glided down his hand.
The stranger begged him desperately on their knees to let the Commander live. The Half-Prince turned his head towards the stranger, his weapon still hovering over the enemy's neck as he was ready to shout a retort when his eyes widened in shock.
This wasn't a person, but a Devilian.
Her dull marigold colored eyes were swollen what one could only assume were from tears, a desperate yet exhausted look enveloping her entire face, crawling closer towards the Half-Prince until her hands grasped the ends of his pants.
"Please...please I am begging you, let him live. Kill me instead if you must–just let him live!" The Half-Prince stared back at the Commander, watching his expression softening while looking at the Devilian.
Knowing he was going to regret his decision, he released the enemy and watched as he lunged towards her, hugging her tightly while the Half-Prince watched the Commander's hand slowly regenerate. After spending so many years on the battlefield, the Half-Prince's hand twitched and itched to attack his enemy, but had asked him a question instead to calm himself.
"Where are the rest of the Imperial Family?"
The enemy Commander flinched, his grasp tightening around the Devilian. "I killed them all."
Gripping his sword as he clenched his jaw, the Half-Prince wasn't furious.
He had tried to hold back his excitement by displaying an emotionless expression, when the corners of his lips began to lift.
"Why." He tried his best to sound indifferent.
The Devilian gently pushed herself off her Commander's grasp, holding onto his arm as the Half-Prince only now noticed her wrist was chained to the dead Princess. "Because the Devildom has met every demand the Empire of Vekmios asked for, and yet they refused to let me go."
"They wanted to further control the Devildom, by keeping the Princess as a war hostage indefinitely."
The Half-Prince had finally realized what this war was really about. "I didn't...I had no idea. That was not what I was told."
The Commander sneered at the Half-Prince, his tight grip hurting the Princess momentarily. "Of course you weren't told! You are nothing but a mere puppet to those people! Why should you have known the truth?!" The Commander grinned madly at his thoughts, standing as the Half-Prince held his sword at the ready, and the Devildoms Princess stood to pull her Commander back. "But we will relish in the fact that your sorry excuse of an Empire will fall, since there is no leader to rule."
The Half-Prince lowered his weapon, unable to sense his murderous intent under all his arrogance. "That would be true, if not for another fact."
"And what, pray tell, is that fact?"
The Half-Prince's subordinates came rushing through the garden as the Commander finished speaking, swords all aimed at their enemy who stood before the Half-Prince. "Commander Levine," his female Lieutenant; Stella Argento, spoke warily, "are the Royal Family safe?"
Looking away from his comrades, the Half-Prince shook his head. "They are all dead." Gasping at this, the remaining knights stared at the Half-Prince. "None had survived the attack." The following knights lowered their weapons from shock, unable to do anything with the information they received.
The Lieutenant quickly thought of a solution before her subordinates descended into chaos. She was the first to approach the Half-Prince and kneeled before him, her hand over her chest as she bowed her head. "Hail to the last member of the Imperial Family! All hail His Majesty, the Emperor!"
Her voice echoed across the hedges of the garden, the knights and remaining servants –who were in hiding– followed suit after she stood and re-aimed her sword at her current enemies.
The enemy Commander and Princess were paralyzed as the now new Emperor approached the two. "Ah...so this was the fact." The Emperor couldn't help but to crack a smile at those words.
"I will apologize for what the previous Emperor had done.” The new Emperor bowed his body halfway with his hand over his heart. "I am terribly sorry for all this turmoil. We have lost so many in a pointless war, that should not have been a war to begin with.'' As he straightened himself, the Emperor continued to hold his hand over his chest. "I will assure you that I am not like the last Emperor. Lady..." He looked over to the Princess, who had quickly said her name with her head held high. "Lady Marbis Liltari Shankar, I hereby free you from the Empire of Vekmios, and will return you back to your Devildom unharmed."
Now...what happens next, most would think it'd be a fairytale, rather than something to be recorded in history.
Time seemed to have frozen everyone but the Commander, the Devildom Princess, the Emperor and his Lieutenant as the sky became shrouded in clouds of grey swirling above them. They, who were all unaffected by the event, were engulfed by a heavenly white light that blinded them momentarily, mere moments after the new Emperor had cut the chains that bound the Princess to a headless corpse.
When their visions were no longer blurred, their eyes widened in shock and awe of who stood before them.
"Greetings our Chosen One’s. I am the embodiment of both the God of Fate, and God of The Source. You may call me, Asiu."
All four instinctually went on their knees with the back of their hands over their foreheads, bowing deeply to the God who took an androgynous form as they told them to rise.
"I have come to congratulate you for preventing a catastrophe, and also to give a warning."
The Commander gulped as he spoke. "A-a warning?"
"Yes. Though peace will now befall on your lands for some time, I must warn you all of the impending danger that lurks." The God then gave a mournful look to the four. "Once every sixty years, your lineage may end in demise, and disorder shall reign upon the world." Stella's hitched breath felt suffocating, taking a single step forward when the Emperor held her bicep, stopping her from going any further.
"What do you mean our lineage may end!? Why must it only be us!!" She became furious, speaking what was on her mind rather than rationalizing the situation.
The God lowered their gaze slightly, but instead of showing their contempt, pity was clearly displayed on their face. "You are not the only ones. As I speak, there are more of us God's speaking to others who share the same fate as you four...but it is as I said, many will want to corrupt you and your descendants, but that mustn’t happen. For if just one gives into the darkness, then all will be lost."
None dared to speak their thoughts as the air had stiffened from the tension.
"Beware once again of the chaos that may follow, for this will be the unwelcoming outcome." The God spoke and showed the four glimpses of the future of what may occur, should they all fail. "Protect yourselves and keep the peace as much as you can. For this will be my first, and last warning to you all."
Stella's blood ran cold as ice, she felt she had been cursed rather than ecstatic of witnessing a God. The hair on her arms and back of the neck stood from the immense sense of danger radiating from the vision.
"As my gift, I shall give the both of you protection that will help aid in your future."
The God bestowed the new Emperor more than a portion of their divine power, stating that he and his lineage will be their descendants as the new Emperor's appearance had changed; his hair that seemed to have been made by the night sky, became rich as gold. And his eyes that were once a dark forest green, resembled the brightest of rubies.
Stella was gifted with the powers of raw magic as well as fast regeneration and aura analysis on top of many more. Her features had changed as well; her long white hair that was tied in a high ponytail turned to a magenta pink, while her eyes changed to bejeweled garnet hues. After the two were blessed by the God, Asiu stared at the Devildom Princess and her Commander. "You both will be blessed by the Devil God in due time, since my abilities have no effect against your species."
"We understand your Holiness, please do not be so concerned for us." Lady Shankar spoke with her head deeply bowed, never meeting the God's gaze.
The God gave a few parting words, causing internal stress between the four. "I wish you all luck, for the future of the world." When the God disappeared, time flowed once again.
What was left of the Imperial Knights blinked in confusion at the two, the Emperor and his Lieutenant explaining the situation of what had happened.
The Emperor had made a decision at that moment to calm the rising storm he felt was about to surface; creating a peace treaty with the Devildom once their Princess had returned, restored the kingdom as well as created a new system, and had changed several laws to appease the public of the new changes.
