As Felix passed tree after tree, he watched as the sun slowly disappeared behind the horizon, while the treetops made the forest an even more perilous place. Bernard blinked his eyes while perched on his back but constantly raised his head, just like Felix, attempting to mimic him. Each time in his peripheral vision, Felix noticed Bernard's efforts and felt the small head resting on his back; these moments made him smile. He himself didn't understand how someone else's child could bring a smile to his face, but he accepted it as a fact.
Taking him in his arms, Felix stepped out onto a beautiful green meadow where dozens of flowers shimmered amidst thick grassy stems. He observed, holding the sleepy toddler in his arms. But as soon as the child saw the meadow, he immediately filled with energy, as if nature itself, the Mother herself, had instructed him to rejoice. Without much thought, Felix released him onto the ground, and the child crawled on the earth, attempting to stand and walk like Felix, but his attempts were unsuccessful, and he fell back onto the ground. Watching Bernard, Felix began to smile. He enjoyed it, but something deep inside him tightened as he remembered his father and the Whisper of the Castle.
"Perhaps raising a child isn't so bad after all," Felix thought, recalling Ida's words about the life he was seeking. Felix began to smile even wider. Watching Bernard's carefree behavior, he forgot about the world's hardships, the pain of losing other people, and himself. He simply enjoyed watching this young boy grow.
