Tenebrous Game

Witchcraft, part I

Witchcraft, part I

Oct 05, 2023

"Really? Witchcraft?" Brandi asks, with a condescending tone. The agent couldn't believe in such fictional rumor. She scratches an itch on her head, and then runs her hand through her long brown curly hair. A woman almost in her 30s who looked as young as Raven, with makeup on her face and very white teeth. Even though she was always wearing fashion shirts or sweaters and ripped jeans, that day was a little colder than usual, maybe because of the weather in that different city, so she decided to wear a Bon Jovi t-shirt with a leather jacket on top of it. Of course, with her customary All Star sneakers.

"I said that's what the people have been saying. It's obviously a well performed trick." Raven answers.

"And that's why we came to Danvers?" Brandi asks another question.

"Well, the president asked for our help. Would you rather call him and deny it?" Raven says, all cocky.

"Okay girls, relax." Andrew says, trying to put off the fire between the brave women. After all, Brandi was still mad at Raven for taking her out of the CIA. "So Venus, do you have any clue of who's killing all those people with 'black magic'?"

"Not yet..." Raven answers and then looks at a bar. "Do you guys want a drink? It's on me."

"While on the job?! Are you out of your mind?" Brandi asks, enraged.

"Relax, Brandi." Andrew says. "I may not know her that well, but I assume she has an agenda with going to that bar."

"I guess you're not that stupid, commander..." Raven says. "There might still be hope for you."

The trio enters that bar. It's crowded. A lot of people on their chairs and tables drinking a lot of beer just like in a day with a final match of football. The place was actually quite nice and cozy, with a southern touch in ther wooden decorations. They approach the balcony. The bartender was a chubby man in his 60s with a bit of grey hair on his head. While cleaning the beer glasses, he turns to his right and spots a familiar face. He opens a smile and goes toward the detective.

"Raven! So good to see you again!" The bartender says, with a strong southern accent.

"Hey, Victor! These are my friends Leonard and Brandi." Raven replies.

"So, what are you guys having today? I've got a brand new ale here, only for special costumers!"

"Thanks, man. But, we're not having anything today."

"I see... Let me guess: another case calls you 'in these here parts'?" Victor asks, with a touch of his southern dictionary. "I assume you came for the rumors about black magic."

"That's how you know him? You've worked on a case here before?" Andrew asks.

"Hell yeah, boy! This lady here, 'pretty as a peach', came 'round one day and arrested a lot of religious fanatics who wanted to burn some innocent folks, calling them witches and wizards. Raven faced them all alone, luring those christian hypocrit scumbags to a trap where they all got arrested." The bartender answers.

"Interesting..." Brandi says, admiring the guts on Raven

"Anyway..." Raven says, trying to go back to the main topic. "You are correct, Victor. But, this so called 'black magic' is nothing but a trick. The gun that exploded in the officer's hand was set up before his encounter with the caped guy." She explained one of the mysteries that was mentioned as 'Witches?' in the newspaper. "Obviously, they altered or covered the gunpowder trajectory. Not to mention the other cheap tricks, I'm not gonna waste my time here explaining them."

"Sharp as tack, right? As usual..." The bartender praises her agility and hurry to solve the case. "So, you think it's related to that case 2 years ago?"

"Yes. I'm pretty sure some religious cuckoo is trying to set up this innocent village that already has a huge reputation of having rumors about witches living around." Raven answers.

"Well, Father McKenzie is probably at the church right now. You could talk to him." Victor helps his old acquaintance.

"Wait, Father McKenzie? Like the Beatles song?" Brandi asks.

"Funny, right?" The bartender answers.

"Thanks, pal!" Raven says as she slaps the table, leaving a 100 dollar bill on it as a gesture of gartitude.

"You're always welcome, Raven!" Victor answers, grabbing the bill and winking his right eye to the detective.

The "three musketeers" get in their rented black sedan, with Andrew driving, and head to the only catholic church in that small village. Getting there, Raven gets a call from Rivers, who was helping them with more information about the case. While she updates him, Andrew and Brandi decide to go in by themselves.

Entering the holy place, they are kindly greeted by the priest of the church, Father McKenzie. The Father asks them to sit in one of the pews in the main corridor, so they can talk better. Andrew explains to him about what's happening and their suspicions. The priest refuses to believe in that story, but Brandi insists and tries to convince him to talk about some sort of red flag he might've seen in one of the faithful people that come to his church:

"Father, you need to understand-" Brandi tries to say.

"I'm sorry, dear. I just can't betray my children like that." The priest interrupts the agent.

"Come on! This is serious! Cut the crap!" Brandi starts to lose her temper.

"Or what?" Father McKenzie taunts her.

"Or I'll take you into custody for reasons that I don't even need to tell you..." She says, while getting closer to him. "And then you'll have all the reasons to assure me that hell is real..."

"Is that a threat...?" The priest asks, not even moving, only lifting his right eyebrow.

"Brandi... Calm down." Andrew advises Brandi, and then tells the priest: "We're sorry, Father. We'll be going. Thank you so much for your time." The commander hands the priest a card with his information and number. "If you see anything, please call..."

Brandi and Andrew leave the place right after that. Two different personalities: Brandi was always straight to the point, a forthright and sincere person, with a bit of impatience on her actions; but Andrew was always sympathetic, always trying to understand a person's point of view. He was way calmer than Brandi... at least when he wasn't under a crazy situation such as the ones that Raven made him go through. Brandi wasn't too happy about what happened. She was ready to have it out with him.

"What was that?" Brandi asks.

"Some members of the clergy can be very stubborn. You would only get that priest mad." Andrew answers. "You can trust me on this one, I've seen that attitude before."

"Right... I see." She understands the commander. At the same time, Raven shows up on the corner of the street, coming from behind the building.

"Where the hell were you?" Andrew asks.

"Actually, I was in quite the opposite of it. At least, it's supposed to be." Raven answers, ironizing Andrew's sentence.

"We didn't see you in the church..." Brandi says.

"Not coming from the front door..." Raven replies, getting three sheets of folded paper out of her gloves.

"You broke in? And what are these?" Andrew asks, as Raven gives them one sheet each.

"These are the names and the addresses of the most diligent people at the church. They come to every mass, financially contribute to the church... There's a high possibility that our lunatic is one of them." Raven answers.

"How did you get that?" Andrew asks, once again.

"The church's computer. Rivers taught me a few things." She replies.

"So, I suppose we should split up and go to each one of them. There aren't that many people, just around 5 in each list." Brandi says.

"It's a small village. I gave you two the nearest people around here. I'll take the car and visit the farthest ones." Raven replies. "Shall we?"

The three heroes split up to find the religious criminal. But, how could Raven be so sure that the guilty person would be in that village? Well, she knew everything related to the case. She convinced Andrew and Brandi that the president sent them to that city as a pretext to fulfill her agenda of finding the so called Helena Schooler. And that woman was in her sheet of paper, which means that Raven knew that the woman frequented those masses. As Collins and Rivers stayed in Seattle, in their central, Raven was willing to do whatever it takes to complete her own mission. Could that mean that Andrew and Brandi were just wasting their time searching for the criminal? Not exactly. Raven knew the details of the case and the possible supects, but she didn't know who was actually the one to blame. So, she decides to pay a visit to the other suspects in her sheet of paper before going to her final destination.
