The once-melancholy atmosphere of the mansion transformed into a hive of excitement. The arrival of a new face was always rare, but the staff welcomed the new Governess with open arms. They offered her assistance in boisterous enthusiasm, eager to guide her through the intricacies of the mansion’s many corridors and wings. 

“Do ask us for help if you need it!” their voices echoed through the halls. 

“Do eat dinner early if you must!” 

“Do make use of our extensive libraries for your teachings!” 

But the warmth of their welcomes danced with hushed whispers: 

“Do not venture into the South Wing.” 

“Do not ever meet the Sovereign’s gaze.” 

“Dont remain awake past 10 pm.” 

These were the murmurs Ariel caught amidst the flurry of activity. Now that she was settled, he knew that things would change and it put a knot in his stomach. 

“Do I have to?” he questioned, his fingers fiddling nervously at his side.

Marriot’s blonde eyebrow raised, “Young Master, I am not asking you. I’m telling you- go downstairs and meet with the new Governess.” 

“Fine,” he exhaled, pushing past Marriot- nearly knocking him over. 

Marriot scoffed, muttering under his breath, “I’m definitely making sure you receive some manners this time.”

He quickly caught up to the boy and together, they descended down the grand staircase and traversed the corridors until they arrived. The breakfast nook was a serene alcove tucked away within the sprawling mansion, a hidden gem nestled amidst the grandeur.

Sunlight poured through the large windows, casting a warm glow upon the scene. A round table, its surface covered with a white cloth, stood as the centerpiece.

The table was adorned with delicate lace placemats and crystal goblets that glistened. Fine tableware adorned with intricate patterns awaited use, each piece whispering tales of lavish feasts and elegant gatherings. 

A delicately carved sideboard graced one wall, displaying an array of breakfast fares Ariel smelled this morning. Silver platters held an assortment of fresh bread, pastries, fruits, cheese, and cured meats. Crystal jars containing preserves and spreads caught the light, their contents a spectrum of colors. 

Overhead, a chandelier- its smaller crystals refracting the morning rays into a dazzling display- hung from the ceiling. Soft, white draperies frame the windows, allowing a gentle breeze to flow in, carrying with it the scents of the surrounding gardens. 

At the table, enjoying the luxury was the Governess whose head was in a book. She wore a tailored dress of muted shades with subtle accents of deep blue. A slender belt cinched her waist, adding a touch of definition to her figure. Her dark hair was neatly pulled back, held in place by an ornate clip. Around her neck, gleamed a pendant– a symbol of knowledge and wisdom. The pendant hung from a fine chain that caught the light and would reflect it on the wall.
