Time went by fast while Sam was in there. Before she knew it, it was already 9:25. She did a cool down, then wiped off her sweat with a towel. As she was drinking water, the other men stopped what they were doing too. They also went and wiped themselves off and got a drink of water. They were all young looking, tall, lean, and muscular.
Sam was grateful that they all kept their shirts on. She'd been to way too many gyms where the men were all naked, showing off their abs. She had abs too, but she wasn't running around flaunting hers.
One of men was brave enough to ask, "Are you here for bodyguard tryout thing?"
She replied nonchalantly, "Yes, are you?"
"I actually work here as a bodyguard for Mr. Rodrigo already. I'm Harry, what's your name?" Harry introduced himself.
"Samantha, but I go by Sam."
He grinned good naturedly, "Nice to meet you, Sam."
She nodded, "Nice to meet you too, Harry."
Harry had chestnut brown hair, warm black eyes, and was wearing just a t-shirt and shorts, like Sam and the other men.
Just as they finished their little conversation, Mr. Rodrigo walked in, flanked by two intimidating looking men.
The one on his left was probably the head of security, as he had a security baton and a gun hanging from his belt. He had thick short black hair, and a bit of a beard. Maybe in his early thrities. The other man was bald, and had a few scars on his face. He looked around the same age.
His nose was slightly crooked, probably from a fight when he was younger. Despite his misleading demeanor, he had a friendly grin on his face. He looked so muscular that he could burst out from his tight suit any time, like King Kong.
Behind them was a sea of men in suits and fighting attire, presumably the other candidates and bodyguards.
Mr. Rodrigo saw Sam and announced, "There's the person I was looking for. Everyone, this is Samantha, who prefers to go by Sam. She is a potential candidate as a bodyguard for my daughter."
A few men behind him looked at her with pity and Sam was confused why. No one took notice of them though, and Mr. Rodrigo continued, "She'll be fighting every single one of you today, so you all better train hard! Victor," he referred to the head of the bodyguards, "You'll explain the rules of sparring to her while the others warm up."
Victor nodded, then walked towards Sam as the other young men went into the fitness room and some into the sparring room. He introduced himself, before telling her the basics.
Sam grinned maniacally. This was exactly what she was the best at. It was like the fight with Marc, yet with actual respectable people with rules. She was very excited, and could feel adrenaline pumping in her veins already.
As Sam put her boxing gloves on, she wondered if she actually needed them. People use them for a reason, she supposed. She turned her attention to her opponent. Her first opponent was a rookie who'd only joined a few months ago. His name was William, and he seemed unsure of himself. So he's the timid type, Sam thought. Should be a piece of cake.
They both stepped into the arena, and Victor signalled the start of the match.
Sam briefly considered whether she should attack first or wait for him to make the first move. During that few seconds, he started charging towards her.
Guess he made the choice for me, Sam thought as she raised her fists.
She kept her guard up as he exhausted himself trying to break through, and lashed out with a kick, swiping him right off his feet. He lost his balance, and tumbled to the ground. Sam didn't waste this opportunity, and jumped on top of him. He surrendered real easy after taking a few punches.
This was way too easy, Sam thought to herself.
Mr. Rodrigo nodded approvingly while stroking his small beard as William was lead off the arena, looking embarrassed. Next up was a muscular dude called Barry, who had been working here for a year.
Sam decided to attack first this time. She lunged at him, feinted a punch, and as he put his hands up to block the punch, she kicked him on the shins instead. His eyes widened in realization right before he doubled over. He regained his composure quickly though, and tried the same trick on her.
Ready, Sam grunted and grabbed his leg, flipped him over, then leapt on him like she'd done with William. He flailed under her, attempting to get up. He failed though, which meant that she won.
As he lumbered off the arena looking embarrassed, Harry was up against her. He nodded in acknowledgment as he put on his gear, and she nodded back at him.
He got into a defensive stance, leaving her to make the first move. So this was his technique, Sam thought to herself. Let's see how things go.
She ran over, quick as lightning, attacking with a flurry of punches. He somehow managed to block every single one, and lashed out with a roundhouse kick. That move was from Muai Thay, which was a form of martial arts.
She swiftly ducked, dodging it, and counter attacked with a punch to the gut.
The force of it threw him a couple feet back. She'd hit him full on. He scrambled to his feet, wheezing, struggling to catch his breath. He surrendered right there.
On his way out, he said, "Seems that I underestimated you, Sam."
Sam smiled, "They all do. You do fight well though."
He tipped his head, then walked off.
After that, different men and a few women came up against her, only to fail.
