Chapter 6: Corrupted memories

Chapter 6: Corrupted memories

Oct 09, 2023

Since the rooftop incident, I've begun to realize that there are moments when I do things that I can't even remember afterward.

For instance, the rooftop incident, which I've heard about from Ayumi repeatedly, is something I can't even imagine myself doing to Eito. These lapses in memory and behavior are becoming increasingly perplexing and unsettling.

It's not just the rooftop incident; as I recall, there have been many moments like these, where I've acted in ways I can't remember or even imagine. The frequency of these occurrences only deepens the sense of unease.

"Your're still awake? I thought you said you were going to sleep an hour ago," Ayumi asks from her desk chair, noticing that I haven't followed through on my earlier intention to sleep.

"I was just thinking about something," I reply, not revealing to Ayumi the unusual experiences and lapses in memory that have been occupying my thoughts.

"I've finished my homework too, Let's go to sleep together," Ayumi suggests as she gets into bed, cuddling with me.

"Sleep on the other side of the bed, Ayumi. It's literally empty," I insist, gently pushing Ayumi away to create some space between us.

"You're always like this," Ayumi mutters as she moves to the other side of the bed, apparently used to my occasional need for personal space.

"Good night," I mutter to Ayumi, feeling a sudden wave of exhaustion washing over me.

---

3 AM at the convenience store.

Chizuki enthusiastically adds a heap of lollipops into her shopping basket.

As Chizuki reaches out for a bar of chocolate, she suddenly senses the presence of someone behind her.

Chizuki swiftly grabs the chocolate bar and turns, her instincts kicking in as she slaps the chocolate bar across the face of the person behind her. The unexpected move causes the person to stumble and fall to the ground.

"What are you trying to do?" The girl on the floor asks, glaring at Chizuki with her violet eyes.

"You just tried to read my mind, didn't you? Who gave you the permission?" Chizuki demands, glaring down at the girl on the floor.

"I'm sorry, but you both can't do this inside the convenience store. Please leave," the convenience store employee intervenes, trying to defuse the situation.

The girl quickly gets up and rushes out of the convenience store, evidently deciding to avoid any further confrontation.

---

"Here she comes. She's the one I've been telling you about," the girl whispers to her friend, pointing out Chizuki as she enters their field of view.

"I think her name is Chizuki. I've seen her come to school with injuries before. She probably gets into a lot of fights," another student gossips, adding to the speculation.

"She's the one that fought with Eito and won? I didn't think he was so weak. The only thing going for him is his face and money," another student adds, laughing at the idea of Eito losing a fight to Chizuki.

The rumors and gossip about Chizuki's life and Eito's involvement continue to circulate among the students.

"Chizuki, you're probably the most famous person at school right now," Ayumi remarks as we walk into school, acknowledging the attention and notoriety Chizuki has gained due to recent events.

"At what cost? They're all making fun of Eito, and he definitely hates me now," I sigh.

"Weren't you done with him?" Ayumi questions me.

"I've been trying to forget about him, but it's not as easy as it sounds," I admit, my feelings for Eito are evidently becoming more complicated than I would like them to be.

"Also, where did you go in the middle of the night? I woke up, and the bed was empty, but I fell asleep again. Did you go to the toilet?" Ayumi asks curiously.

I did? I don't remember.

"Yeah, I just went to the toilet," I reply, providing a simple explanation for my nighttime absence.

I shouldn't stay at Ayumi's house anymore if I can't even remember using my body. It's dangerous for her and her parents.

"Ayumi, I'm moving back to my dorm room. I can't leave it empty for too long, and I feel okay now," I tell Ayumi, deciding it's best to return to my dormitory for the time being.

"Okay, you can come back anytime," Ayumi says, understanding rather easily this time.

---

The following weekend I moved back to my dorm room.

"I don't know what to do anymore. It's not something I can control at this point," I speak my thoughts out loud.

I receive a call from the reception, and the phone rings. I pick it up to find out why they're calling.

"Is this Chizuki?"

"Yes, this is Chizuki," I confirm to the receptionist on the other end of the line.

"There's a young man named Akiyama Eito waiting outside. I apologize, but we cannot permit entry at this late hour."

"I see, Akiyama Eito," What is doing here?

"Thank you for letting me know. I'll go outside to see him."

I end the call to go outside.

"Why are you here so late at night?"

"I came here with something important to tell you."

"Get to the point," Chizuki insists abruptly.

"When did your hair grow so long? Is that a wig you're wearing?" Eito suddenly notices.

"Oh, Shit! I thought I had my hood on," Chizuki exclaims as she hastily pulls it up to conceal her hair.

Eito gazes at Chizuki with a puzzled expression.

"It was just a wig, Akiyama. If we're finished here, I have somewhere to be," Chizuki explains and leaves to go somewhere.

"Where are you headed at this hour?" Eito asks following Chizuki.

"It's none of your business. Please, don't follow me," Chizuki responds firmly.

"This only piques my curiosity further. Are we going to confront someone?" Eito asks with intrigue.

"Who is 'we'? I'm the only one going," Chizuki clarifies.

"So you are going to confront someone? I'll tag along; I could use something to do," Eito says, joining Chizuki.

"No, this won't work. I need you to stay put; it's too dangerous," Chizuki insists, concerned for Eito's safety.

"Do you think I'm weaker than you?"

"If you get hurt, Chizuki won't be happy. So, please stay here," she says without hesitation.

"Why are you talking like that? It's giving me the creeps, I've got chills running down my spine," Eito exclaimed.

"This is the second reason I warned you not to follow me," Chizuki explained.

"I'm having too much fun, I'm definitely sticking with you."

"I don't care what happens to you, so do as you please."

---

Alarm beeps.

I rise and prepare for school.

"Sundays always seem to fly by; it feels like I barely even slept last night," I yawn.

I spot Eito waiting at the dormitory gate, also caught in a yawn.

Wait, Eito? Wasn't he here last night too? Did I meet him then? I can't recall.

"What are you doing here? I thought we had finished walking together," I inquire of Eito.

"I meant to ask you something last night, but I forgot."

"Did we happen to meet last night?"

"Yes, don't you remember? We were together until 4 in the morning," Eito asks, appearing confused.

No I obviously don't! And why were we together for that long at night?!

"I genuinely don't recall. Did something significant happen last night?"

"How could you forget something that happened just last night? Perhaps all this studying is taking a toll on your memory," Eito suggests.

"Could you please remind me of what we did last night?"

"You seem like a completely different person from last night. You mentioned something about getting into a fight, so I tagged along to see, but instead, we spent the night searching for that person everywhere," Eito explains.

"Who were we searching for all night?"

"You don't remember? You described her as a girl your age with rare violet eyes."

"Why on earth was I searching for her?" I ask Eito, my expression horrified as I reflect on my actions from last night.

"I don't know, and if you can't recall anything, isn't that a cause for concern?" Eito replies, sharing my worry.

"It definitely is. What should I do, Akiyama-kun?" I ask, despite my uncertainty about sharing this with him.

"Is there something going on with you? You keep waking up with injuries and now no memory of what happened," Eito expresses his concern.

"It's more severe than that; it's not limited to those incidents. Right now, I can't imagine going to school in this state; it's consuming all my thoughts," I break down in front of Eito.

"Would you like to come to my house instead? We could skip school for a day," Eito suggests.

"Yes," I agree, feeling more at ease with the idea of staying with Eito.

---

Eito's house was surprisingly close to my dormitory, and it was just as spacious as I had imagined.

"Come on in," Eito invites, holding the door open for me.

"Is there nobody home at the moment?" I inquire, looking around the empty house.

"No one's home since it's a Monday. Want to head up to my room?" Eito suggests, gesturing toward the maids who were cleaning and staring at us.

"Yes," I agree, ready to follow Eito to his room.

"Alright, follow me. And, Komi-san, please send some refreshments to my room for my friend," Eito instructs as he heads upstairs, with me following closely behind.

"Have a seat on the couch," Eito suggests, taking my school bag from me.

I sit down on the couch and suddenly realize that I was indeed in Eito's room.

"Do you want to give Ayumi a call? She could come over too," Eito suggests.

I hesitate, considering what to say to Ayumi about being at Eito's house.

Eito chimes in, "You can simply tell her you're at my place, and we're just hanging out for the day. No need to overcomplicate it."

"I don't think I'll be able to. Could you please tell her for me?"

"Sure, Call her and then hand me the phone," Eito agrees, taking the initiative to take the call for me.
