The Tale of Mysteria

Issue #5-Chapter 6: The Missing Princess, Part 1

Issue #5-Chapter 6: The Missing Princess, Part 1

Oct 19, 2023

As Gideon and I arrived at a street vendor selling fish kebabs, the smell of the cooked meat entered into our nostrils. While the majority of people walked past us and the street vendor, some people in regular clothing stood near the street vendor and we watched a chestnut skinned man advertise his food to his customers.

People's chatter and laughter vibrated around us alongside children's screams and people's footsteps. A cool morning breeze hitted our skins and Gideon's breath and the fresh air was mixed in with the food's smell inside my nose.

I sniffed the air and sighed out of excitement, looking down at my porch and the street vendor back and forth.

Alright, Mike! Let's go get some food already!

Gideon turned to me. "Are you ready, Mike?"

I turned to Gideon. "Are you kiddin'?! Of course I am! Let's go!"

After seeing a couple people purchase the street vendor's fish kebabs, Gideon and I walked our way towards the him. He turned to us and smiled. "Why hello there, you two. You seemed to be interested in buying these." He moved the fish kebab towards us.

"Why, yes, we would," I answered. "Two, please?"

"Okay, coming right up," the street vendor exclaimed, grabbing another fish kebab with the same hand as he held his current kebab. "That'll be ten copper coins total."

So they're five copper coins each, huh? Sweet!

"Got it!" I exclaimed when I opened up my pouch. Then my face became puzzled when I looked inside. "Huh? What the-?!"

Gideon noticed. "Huh?! What's wrong, Mike?" He took a peek inside and widened his eyes. "Oh…"

There I saw nothing but coal inside of it instead, causing confusion inside my mind.

What the hell?! Weren't there a lot of copper coins in here a while ago?! What the hell happened?!

With memories of the man who gave me a pouch earlier, I squeezed it and breathed hard a couple times while I glared at it.

It was him! He tricked me into giving me a lot of copper coins! When I find him, I'm going to make him pay big time!

"Uh, sir? Are you okay?!" The street vendor asked when he cucked his eyebrow at me.

I dropped the pouch on the ground and a couple of coals came out of it. "You know, what? We're not buying anything here, so you can keep it."

The street vendor looked down at the pouch, then back at me. "Oh, okay. I see…well, better luck next time, sir."

After we walked away from that street vendor, I turned to Gideon. "It was that man! He tricked me into givin' me some copper coins! We're goin' to find him, and once we do, we're going to make him pay big time!"

Then my stomach growled at me and I ignored it and kept going. Gideon frowned at me when he dashed up near me.

"Look, I understand why you're upset, but let's go steal some food first, then we'll go looking for him," Gideon whispered.

Sighing, I stopped moving and turned to Gideon, shaking my head. "Got it," I whispered back at Gideon while my stomach growled again.

After Gideon and I stole some food from a different street vendor and ate it, we searched for the man who gave me some fake money. We failed to find him.

We looked everywhere all day without getting caught by the guards who knew our faces, and we still couldn't find him. With twilight appearing before us, we turned to one another.

"Look, it's about to get dark. Let's head home and rest up for the night," Gideon suggested. "We'll search for that scammer tomorrow."

"But-" I cried.

"I know you want to find him, Mike, but let's find him tomorrow and give it a rest for the night. We will find him. I promise."

I turned to another alleyway and Gideon back and forth, then sighed and frowned. Yeah, I guess Gideon has a point there. "Alright, let's go home…"

Gideon shook his head a bit. "Alright."

Gideon and I began to head back home. I turned back to the same alleyway and gazed at it for a few seconds before I turned back to my destination.

Then the same man watched us go home from afar and grinned viciously at us, leaning against the wall without us noticing him. "Ha! I knew these fools wouldn't find me," he whispered to himself as he moved away from the wall and walked through the crowd. He looked up at the white castle and grinned at it even more.

"Ah, the princess…" he continued in a lower voice. "She has the royal crystal. I must have it for my master tonight. He'll be very pleased with this once I get it for him."

He continued fighting through a chatty crowd and he headed for one of the street vendors for food.
