Quentin
I almost felt sorry for him.
Like being the boy who fled his home out of fear of his father wasn’t bad enough, the fairy is a freak who can’t even shift. Poor boy!
I had every intention of making him feel sorry for throwing me off a wall, but Goddess protects me from being near him. No, thanks. Life is already punishment enough for him, I don’t need to add bodily injuries to the mix.
I have made plenty of people crawl at my feet before, but I’ve never seen anyone crumble quite like he did in front of the entire class. It was almost making me feel bad for him, that’s how bad it got.
Sometimes people take the fun out of revenge and I was genuinely just curious about not being able to mind link him. I could never have imagined the reason was so nefarious. So salacious, he practically handed himself to me on a silver platter.
Anyway, that’s over now. I’m betting he’s done messing with me. He knows what I’m capable of and should have learned his lesson. Don’t fuck with me, it’s not gonna end well for you.
Ironically, I was the least bit surprised to see my brother feeling empathy for him. I know he relates to the freak on some level, I get that. So that hug wasn’t surprising at all. What surprised me was seeing Dragomir bothered by it. I know he doesn’t like to see men doing stuff in front of him - neither do I - but it was just a hug. Even I understood it was out of pity.
In the days that followed, the boy was more diminished than Layla when she loses to me in wrestling practice. Though she puts up much more of a fight than he did. That was child's play compared to beating her.
Like I said before, don't let her gender fool you. She's a fierce warrior who is better than most of the boys in the team.
My week was divided between school and training in the center with Mr. Booker. Speaking of fierce warriors, that man is a beast.
He doesn't let us have any easy time inside the center. He always challenges Jude and I to new combat moves and keeps us on our toes constantly.
I'm sure my father wouldn't have it any other way. It's tough business being Alpha of a pack, especially the largest in the country.
It's an exhausting routine, but I'm used to it by now. At least I don't have training every day of the week. I mean, I can rest on weekends and the occasional Fridays.
I take every opportunity I get to be with Cassie in between breaks. Fortunately, we have most of our classes together so it's easy.
Though I told Dragon to get a girlfriend before, I understand why he refuses to. It's a recipe for heartbreak. But my birthday is still months away and I'm horny now.
Sorry, not sorry. I want what I want and make no excuses for it. Though I'm sure that should the worst happen, I'm gonna be devastated. But it's the price of admission for dating while unmated.
I don't particularly look forward to having my heart broken or breaking Cassie's. But I can't give her up. I won't, I refuse to do it.
By Friday, I was desperately looking forward to another weekend. It's going to be an extended holiday weekend with Labor day falling on Monday, so I had an extra day off from school and training.
There's so many activities I'm looking forward to doing. My parents are going away for the long weekend, so we'll have the house all to ourselves.
Because of my dad's position, he travels a lot for work representing our pack but this time they're visiting my mother's parents who live in El Paso.
In fact, a large portion of her family lives over there. She was raised here but they decided to move away after they retired to stay closer to my mom's sister's family.
Of course, my parents have strict rules about who can come into the house while they're away. But that just means I'm not throwing a party, just inviting a few of my friends over. No big deal.
"I know y'all are looking forward to enjoying your long weekend, but it's time we discuss this term history project. It's gonna be worth a third of your grade this semester." - The teacher announced minutes before the end of the third period.
All of us are already bored at the prospect.
"You can pick a historical figure to present a paper about. It's a duo project, so you have to select a theme in conjunction with your partner." - She continued and I already looked at Owen to partner up. I love doing school projects with him. It's an easy A.
"The paper is due before Thanksgiving, so that gives you plenty of time to get the presentation ready. I wanna see more than just a PowerPoint. I wanna be impressed!" - She lectured while looking at the classroom.
"Oh and one more thing…" - She said as students started to partner up.
"I'm not gonna let Owen do this project with Quentin this year. I'm into you, Mr. Atwood! You're gonna have to pick another partner!" - She declared and I gasped in shock.
"What? Oh come on, ma'am!" - I protested loudly.
"Sorry, Mr. Atwood. No free passes this semester. Owen is gonna pick another partner outside of his friend group." - She stated, trashing my plans.
"Sweet! Owen is mine!" - Jalensky declared, too happy for my taste. I glared at him, though there's nothing I can do about it.
"Oh you can't pick him either, Mr. Dragomir. Owen has to pick a partner outside of his friends. Sorry." - She declared, much to my best friend's chagrin. Owen was lost as literally the rest of the wrestling team called him to partner up.
"Wait. So that means I can pick anyone I want to do the project with?" - Owen inquired, raising an eyebrow in curiosity.
The teacher looked at him thinking about her answer, which basically was…
"Yes, choose wisely because I don't wanna see you doing all the work alone." - She cautioned him.
Here's the thing, everyone knows he's a brainiac. He has a 4.0 G.P.A. and his reputation is well known. So he could take the pick of the litter.
"In that case, I choose Layla." - He announced, surprising literally everybody.
"What?!" - I gasped in shock and I wasn't alone.
"I'm already doing it with Jude!" - She shot it down, looking baffled at him.
"Oh, right. That's alright then." - He blushed under the collective stares. Then he picked a random boy from the team.
"What's happening? Did you do some sort of spell, freak? What's with the guys from the team wanting to get with you?" - I questioned her, perplexed by this turn of events.
Both she and Jude glared at me, naturally.
"Stop calling me a freak, jerk!" - She protested vehemently.
Blaine was glaring at Owen in the middle of this whole exchange and now he's glaring at me.
"Honestly, Quentin. This whole business of treating Layla like she is any different than the rest of us is getting old already! She is not or has never been a freak. At this point, you're just embarrassing yourself!" - Blaine interjected in an annoyed tone, looking at me in a disapproving way.
We're all perplexed by this. What the hell!
"Quentin? Whatever happened to Alpha?" - I cried out, revolted by this.
"You need to earn being called Alpha! And you better get to it fast before your whole future is taken away from you!" - He reprehended me, visibly mad. In fact, I don't remember him being this pissed off at me before.
The bell rang and everyone was quite impressed by him, especially Layla.
"Are you alright?" - Blaine approached her inside the classroom, sounding worried.
"I'm fine. Thanks for that." - She grinned widely at him, swooning.
"It's nothing. I should have spoken up sooner." - He said, humbly.
Meanwhile, I turned to Owen to ask what I'm sure everyone wants to know at this point.
"You could have picked anybody inside the classroom, why did you pick her?" - I grilled him, who looked uncomfortable. At this, all eyes turned to him.
Owen blushed under the collective attention and got flustered.
"She's not a freak, Quentin!" - He replied, looking at me reprehensibly.
What the hell is happening today?
"The next person who calls me Quentin is gonna get it! What the hell is happening with my teammates?" - I'm raging inside the classroom.
Layla and Blaine left together side by side. Jude was right behind them. The rest of us collected our belongings as I scrambled to understand what just happened.
Needless to say, wrestling practice was a little awkward today. Blaine kept glaring at Owen. Layla was mostly not bothered by it, though she was curious about why he chose her.
But when the two boys faced off against each other on the mat it got ugly fast. Coach had to intervene before it got out of hand between them.
When we got to the locker room afterwards, the tension was palpable.
"Are you okay, dude? Are you taking any medication?" - I inquired of Owen in a worried tone.
"I'm fine, Alpha. You think I must be crazy because I'm interested in a girl?" - He glared daggers at me.
"There's a hundred girls you could be interested in. Why her? Why now?" - I questioned him, puzzled by this.
"It's kind of hard to demonstrate any interest in the girl your friend calls a freak as if she was a monster." - He snarled at me, irritated.
"Oh my Goddess!" - I gasped in complete shock.
"You better leave her the hell alone, Owen! I'm warning you! Back off!" - Blaine threatened him, standing in front of his locker with a menacing expression.
The two of them stared down for a minute before they carried on their business. The tension followed us all the way to the showers and while we got dressed.
I glanced at Jalensky at some point mouthing to him 'what the hell is going on in the team?'.
By lunch break, the senior class was buzzing about the events that took place earlier. And now with what happened at practice, it'll only add fuel to the fire.
When we returned for the first period after lunch, things were still awkward between Owen and Blaine. Layla was mostly not paying attention to the feud, but she was feeling some type of way for Blaine.
I guess who doesn't like a romantic gesture after all. The buzz wasn't dying down as the period ended.
"I'm not gonna lie. Blaine got major points with me today. But what the hell was that with Owen?" - Jude whispered to her, but not low enough that I couldn't hear it.
"I have no idea!" - She replied, puzzled by it.
"It's like suddenly the boys all realized that you're one of the prettiest girls of the entire school." - Beck interjected in an amused tone.
Layla smiled at his statement, but quickly grimaced.
"Thanks, Beck. But they can go back to ignoring me now. Last thing I need is to be pulled from the team because I'm distracting my teammates." - She said, worriedly.
"That's not gonna happen, Lay. Not to mention it'd be kinda sexist to punish you for other people's behavior." - Jude spoke, reassuring her.
She looked anxious and for once I can totally see her point. I did not see that coming.
"So, do you have a secret crush on her too?" - I asked Jalensky, who laughed at my question while Owen scowled.
"No, Alpha. She's not the one I have a secret crush on. But thanks for that. I needed to laugh." - He replied, laughing at the question.
"Aha! So you do have a secret crush too?" - I accused him in an amused tone.
"Who doesn't? We're in high school. If you haven't secretly dream cast your own mate, you're lying." - He argued in a convincing tone.
Yeah, can't argue there. Though in my case, it's pretty obvious.
"I'm sure even your brother has his dream mate." - He continued, glancing at Jude who blushed at being mentioned in the conversation.
"He's gonna be mated to 'peasant'. It doesn't take a genius to figure it out." - I spoke without missing a beat. Kingsley got flustered.
"You do know he's not the only omega in school, right?" - Jude interjected from his seat, not pleased by this.
"Yeah, but he's practically begging for it." - I snickered, glancing at the small shy boy.
We gathered our stuff to move on to the next class. Kingsley practically ran away blushing.
"My parents will be out this weekend. Do you want to stop by? I mean, if you're not on a date." - Jude asked his best friend as we took a seat.
"Of course. I'll text you." - She smiled at him contently.
"Beck, do you want to come to my house?" - He surprised the boy who was startled by the surprise invitation.
"Me?" - He stuttered nervously.
"Yeah. My parents will be away, so I'd like to invite you too. Is that okay?" - He elaborated, staring at him with a charming smile.
"I'd love to go, thanks." - Beck replied, sounding excited at the prospect.
"Perfect. Give me your number so I can text you." - He handed him his phone.
"I see your house is gonna be infested with fairies this weekend." - Jalensky chimed in a sour tone.
"It's MY house. It's YOU who shouldn't be there! Stay the fuck out of my business, Jalensky, before I show you who's the real Alpha!" - My brother threatened him, eyes glowing in rage.
He must be really angry because he never brought this word up before in relation to himself. Not that Jalensky is intimidated by him.
Beck returned the phone to my brother tentatively.
"Don't mind him, Beck. Some people are so bitter that it's not enough that they have sadness in their lives, they need to bring you down too. I'll personally pick you up this weekend." - Jude spoke, sideways glaring daggers at Jalensky.
I know Dragon takes after me in this bickering with my brother. I don't set the best example for him, but sometimes I think he takes it a bit too far for my taste.
Though if I reprimand him for it now, I'm probably gonna sound like a hypocrite.
"Speaking of dates, we're on for this weekend. Right?" - Blaine asked Layla from across the room. They sit on opposite sides, but all voices carry inside the classroom [when you’re a werewolf].
"Yes, we are. But it's gonna be difficult for you to top the last one." - She snickered, seemingly enchanted by him.
"That's because you haven't been in their pool yet! Bring a bathing suit because the forecast is sunny this Saturday." - He spoke confidently.
Hot damn! That boy is not playing around!
Layla was smiling radiantly at his proposal.
"Sorry, my friend. You snooze, you lose." - I told Owen, who was grimacing at this exchange.
"Neither of them are mated yet. It ain't over til it's over!" - He shot back in a sour tone, grabbing the happy couple's attention.
Oh my Goddess! Who would have thought?
The force is strong in Layla, I hate to admit it.
A|N: This is only the fourth character I chose the name because of a song, but I loved it. The other ones were Bruno from “The Rogue’s Mate” and Rhiannon from “Topping the Enemy”.
I also chose Jude because of a song, but it didn’t come up as of yet.
This love triangle is gonna be off the charts. You, my dear reader, can hardly wait.
Love,
Léo.
