The rest of Segar’s day is just like usual. Showering, dinner with his dad, and then going to bed. The only change since summer break is that his studying period has become time for his leisure. The clear file that Lieutenant Montana gave him was mostly about documents for background checking. The bureaucracies in this country are on another level that Segar wishes the government would care for Colville as much as they cared about their papers. Not only must Segar fill in detailed information about himself, but also his parents and grandparents. The amount of work that needs to be done is not the biggest problem though. It is how it needs to be done which causes the trouble. The documents must be completed in strict format; However, the instruction that is given is not much of a help, and texting Lieutenant Montana right away is not a great choice either. Having taken a glimpse at the given documents, Segar hops on bed and starts gaming again. Maybe it is a better idea to seek help from the other nine soon-to-be cadets after Lieutenant Montana’s briefing with them tomorrow.
The next morning, he wakes up late for the first time since high school. Having been released from academic pressure has spoiled Segar. His morning routine remains the same today with a cut down in recreation time as he needs to finish the paperwork. He has no obstacle in filling his personal information; However, the documents related to his parents need to wait until dinner is finished. Some of them are so explicit that no matter how filial pious Segar is, he would still have no idea what to fill in. Not to mention, those of his grandparents. He will have to make a trip to the suburbs because of his grandparents’ unexplainable grudge toward technology. The work for this morning can be concluded for now. It was a productive morning you can say. In Segar’s estimation, just by the start of next week, he can happily submit the documents back to Lieutenant Montana. He hopes that there will not be many mistakes. That would create a lot of work for Lieutenant Montana, which he wants to avoid at all costs.
5:00 P.M, Segar was woken up by a message notification. It was from Lieutenant Montana. He wonders why would Miss Montana send him a message first.
“Please not more paperwork…” - Segar sighs while talking to himself, then opens the messaging app.
“You have (2) new messages from: Lieutenant Montana, Coville Mobile service.”
“Hey, kiddo! Join the group chat that I put at the end of this text. Also, there will be only 2 future cadets left. The rest chickened out as the name “Gravefield Academy” showed up! So, hooray! Less things to do for you and me.” - Lieutenant Montana’s text goes.
Indeed, Segar has less to take care of now. The bigger the group is, the harder the job for the leader. But is that worth cheering? Most of the successful applicants are similar to Segar: They studied like crazy without any care of how much it would impact their health in the long run. They wanted to escape their somber reality at Colville too, but they withdrew. Is Gravefield Ground Forces Academy that frightful for a nerd? Well, Segar may also be a nerd, but an ambitious nerd who wants to make it through the sombreness of Colville. Right now, Gravefield Ground Forces Academy is his only shining beacon.
With no more thoughts, Segar clicks on the link sent by Lieutenant Montana. The group chat only has her reminder about the submission of documents at the moment. It is the other two members of the chat that draw his attention.
First, there is Addison. Addison is one of Segar’s few acquaintances in high school. The term “friend” is too much considering their relationship. He was Segar’s classmate for three years. They rarely talked, but Segar liked him. Although he was always the runner-up, both in class rank and in the Colville Gifted Students contest, Addison was happy with that. He showed no jealousy or hatred toward Segar like most would. He made great efforts to establish a friendship with Segar. But, at the time, Segar’s only focus was getting into college, so Addison’s kindness did not affect him. Now, having Addison by his side would be nice as the new hell called “Gravefield Academy” is waiting for them. Segar would love it if Addison could be his best friend at the Academy. From his perspective, Addison is like a clingy puppy. Sometimes, they are just too annoying to be around, but all in all, it’s great to have them by your side.
The other is Sullivan. He got the third prize in the Coville Gifted Students contest last year and was Segar’s classmate for three years too. If anyone ever asks you “Who is the genius of Coville?”, the answer will be Segar; However, if the question is “Who is Mr. Perfect of Coville?”, the right response should be Sullivan. Despite the fact that he also had a long marriage with extra classes and mock exams, Sullivan's physique and strength did not suffer as much as Segar's. He had a well-built body and always aced P.E in high school. He could be Segar’s personal trainer at Gravefield Academy Academy, his savior for any future physical evaluation.
Just as Segar is about to turn off the messages and open his favorite game again, a new notification pops up:
“Sullivan has invited you to join “Gravefield Academy-er of Colville (without the Lieutenant)”
Like when he was in high school, whenever the homeroom teachers brought up the idea of creating a group chat, his classmates would make another one without the teachers in it. Well, this might also be a good idea, you do not want to disturb Lieutenant Montana too much, and it will be a place for them to gossip about her too. Segar accepts the invitation. There was already a message from Sullivan in there.
