Quentin
Have you ever heard the saying "when the cat's away the mice will play"?
Well, let's just say though I love my parents, I love it even more when they spend the weekend away. Especially considering the extended holiday weekend.
I'm having such a blast with the house all to myself. I mean, Jude is here too but it doesn't matter. His presence doesn't bother me or derail my plans whatsoever.
Not even the fact that he brought the fairy freak to our home bothers me. Not really. As long as they stay out of my way, I'm good to go.
In fact, all I care about is the fact that my friends and girlfriend can come here and we can have fun, enjoying the much welcomed time off. On Saturday, after a pleasant evening with them, Cassie was able to sleep over in my house. Of course, her parents thought she was spending the night at Jessica's house.
It is a rare occasion in which she gets to spend the whole night with me and it only happens when my parents are away. They don't allow her in my bedroom when they're present, safe if the door is opened and even so it's for a limited amount of time.
At this point, I'm used to circumvent their restrictions, it's not a limitation to me. But enjoying my hopeful future Luna in my bed is a fantastic treat. We stayed awake for hours into the night doing... Well, what teenagers who are in love do.
I felt a bit bad for Dragon to be sleeping alone on the sofa - he usually sleeps in my room - but he insisted it was fine by him. I wouldn't be offended if he chose to go home like the rest of the people who came over. I know at this point he's practically the third son and though our couch is comfortable, I wouldn't make anyone sleep on it.
But if he says it's fine, I'm not gonna expel him from my house. In fact, we are going to spend Sunday at his. His parents are also away for the Labor Day weekend. But their restrictions are much more effective than ours because unlike my house, his is staffed.
However, his parents don't mind if he brings a limited number of people over. So, my Sunday is gonna be spent by the pool. And I do love his house. The maid cooks a mean 'arroz con pollo' that it's simply to die for.
I woke up on Sunday late in the morning with Cassie by my side on the bed. I gently kissed her cheek before we got up and made our way to the bathroom. I wish my parents had built this house with three suites instead of just one - theirs, of course - but at least I share a bathroom with just one person.
As I walked towards the restroom, I noticed that Jude's bedroom door was open. He already left the house earlier. To wake up early on a Sunday takes commitment. Good for him.
After Cassie and I are freshened up, we walk downstairs to find Dragomir slouching on the sofa playing with his phone still shirtless. We greeted him as we passed by towards the kitchen. Cassie and I started making breakfast for us since we're hungry.
"At what time did you wake up? Did you see when Jude left?" - I inquired of him as my voice carried from the kitchen to the living room.
"No, I didn't see him leave. I woke up half an hour ago, at the most." - He replied, still playing with his phone. He was half covered by a sheet as he wore shorts to sleep.
"Right. By the way, where were you earlier at dawn? I came downstairs to grab some water around 2 a.m. and didn't see you sleeping. I thought maybe you decided to go home instead of sleeping here." - I questioned him, puzzled.
Jalensky was taken aback by the question. He sat up straight and put his phone away, looking frazzled. He thought about it for a minute before replying:
"Probably in the bathroom. I had a lot of beer last night." - He said, humorously.
"Nice try, my friend. I checked both bathrooms." - I rebuked, starting to get suspicious. There are three bathrooms in this house. One downstairs and another upstairs where my brother and I shower. The one inside my parents' room is off limits to anyone save from an emergency.
Werewolves are very particular about scents and my father hates other people's scents inside his bedroom - especially males. That means everyone who visits here knows that it's prohibited to go inside the Alpha's suite. Of course, if we need to, my parents wouldn't object to either me or Jude entering their room. But not when they're absent.
Jalensky's eyebrows shot up as he was backed into a wall. I could hear his heart starting to race and I could already tell he was about to feed me some bullshit. Werewolves are naturally great lie detectors.
"It was really hot inside the house, I was probably taking some air outside. I had trouble sleeping last night." - He replied, flustered.
"So instead of adjusting the air conditioner, you left the living room to go outside in the yard at 2 a.m.?" - Suspicion dripped from my tone as I was not buying what he's selling. At this point, even Cassie was suspicious of him as well.
"What do I know about adjusting the air conditioner?" - He refuted, playing dumb.
"There's a remote control. You push the button to go up or down. It's not exactly rocket science." - I rolled my eyes. I honestly was asking to kill time, but now I'm positively intrigued by his disappearance in the middle of the night.
"What do you care where I was? I promise you I wasn't in your parents' room, if that's what you're worried about!" - He shot back, annoyed at me. Judging by his defensive tone, I'm more curious now than ever.
"I'm not. The Alpha knows your scent. If you step foot in his room, it's your funeral." - I countered, jokingly. Of course my father is not gonna kill someone for going into his room, but Jalensky of all people knows it's forbidden to go there.
"Anyway, is the breakfast ready? I'm hungry!" - He sulked, dodging the issue.
"If you're hungry, then come help us cook it. We don't have maids here like in your house." - I rolled my eyes in annoyance. It's great to have privacy, but the downside is we have to cook our own food now that my parents aren't here.
Dragomir pouts like a spoiled brat, gets up from the couch and walks towards the bathroom. Later, he puts on a shirt and comes to the kitchen where we're finishing making breakfast.
The whole time we're eating breakfast, Cassie and I are looking at him suspiciously. This whole disappearing act of his suddenly became much more interesting than I anticipated. After all, where could he possibly be?
If he was a stranger, one could argue he was somewhere he's not supposed to or doing something he shouldn't. But there's nothing out of place. And it's not like he would take something that doesn't belong to him or mess around the place. So the question remains.
"Stop looking at me like that! I was just outside for a few minutes. Why do you care?" - He protested after a while of uncomfortable silence.
"I don't. I'm just curious about why you're lying to me." - I replied point blank. Honestly, this is so amusing. The mystery is intriguing to me.
"I'm not lying. I don't remember what I was doing at 2 in the morning." - He refuted, raising his voice.
"Yes, you do. And yes you are lying. I can hear your heart racing as we speak." - I retorted, frowning at his insistence.
"Whatever, man! I couldn't sleep, so I went outside to jerk off thinking about Rachel. Sorry about it, Cassie." - He admitted, blushing. Cassie gulped at the awkwardly strange confession.
"I hoped you cleaned after yourself." - I said, giggling. He's still lying but I'm not getting the truth out of him, so I might as well give up now. Plus, if he were to jerk off in this house, it'd be far easier and more private to do so in the bathroom. Not outside in the yard.
After breakfast, we washed the dishes and prepared to go to the Dragomir's residence.
Soon enough, we entered the lavish three floors house. We first passed the foyer with a winter garden carefully taken care of by the gardener. Then, a massive living room beautifully decorated with an adjacent dining room.
We continued walking towards the pool, heated during winter time, but now perfectly ready for the hot day ahead of us. Jalensky climbed upstairs to his room to change clothes as Cassie and I went ahead to the pool house. We changed into more appropriate attire for the occasion.
The maid came in with refreshments for us and we thanked her. She knew I was coming, so I could already smell her cooking all the way inside the kitchen. Mrs. Cortez has been with the Dragomirs for decades, so she's practically family.
I stretched myself by the pool next to Cassie, sipping some lemonade as we waited for Jalensky to come back. Some time after, Owen, Rachel and some other friends of ours arrived to enjoy a parents' free Sunday afternoon.
The conversations flowed through the afternoon but not before I feasted myself in some authentic latin home cooked meal.
I love my mother's cooking, but Mrs. Cortez has a way with spices that is unparalleled. After I stuffed myself, we adjourned to the living room for a moment before we returned to the pool.
Since most of the people who arrived had already eaten lunch, only the three of us were here.
"I'm not gonna lie, Dragon. If I lived in this house, I would never have settled for a simple couch. You're a trooper." - Cassie told Jalensky, admiring the ostentatious place.
"It's totally not a big deal, Cassie. The Atwood's sofa is actually pretty comfortable. I just didn't want to return to an empty house." - He explained in a humble tone.
He's not an only child, but his sister is much younger so she traveled with his parents. He was given the option to go too, but preferred to stay back and enjoy the unsupervised weekend.
I felt bad for him. I know he's a privileged white boy, but I get feeling lonely sometimes. This is a big house to stay alone. That's probably why he gravitates towards me so much. I'm the brother he never had.
And he's the brother I probably wish I had. Though I have it better than him because whether I want it or not, I'm never alone.
"I understand, brother. I wouldn't want to stay alone in this big house either. I'm glad we could all be here today." - I empathize with him.
After a while, we joined our friends who were playing inside the pool. Owen had a book on his hand, semi isolated as always. He was protected under a sunshade, entertaining himself while the others frolicked in the blue water.
Rachel demanded Jalensky's attention, which he was happy to comply with. I focused on Cassie for a while before I walked over where Owen was.
"You're allowed to have fun too, you know? It seems like a waste for you to not enjoy the wonderful pool." - I argued, taking a seat next to him.
Owen turned to look at me, head just above the book on his hand.
"I know, Alpha. I'm just finishing here, I'm going to the pool later." - He replied, looking at the people swimming and playing in the water.
"Okay, I just wanted to point out that Layla is not the only girl in the world. You are allowed to have other interests." - I commented, slightly fearful of his reaction.
He frowned at me reprehensibly.
"She's the only one for me." - He stated with a knitted eyebrow glaring at me.
"All right. Suit yourself. There's food if you're hungry." - I said, getting up from the chair.
"Thank you." - He spoke before returning to concentrate on his book.
I kind of feel bad for him in a way. If he likes her, then he should have pursued her sooner. Now that she's dating Blaine, I highly doubt he has any chance.
Especially for someone as shy as he is. And I do take some blame for the way I have always treated Layla. But if I had known he liked her, maybe things could've been a little different.
Though I highly doubt it, to be honest. I genuinely am not a fan of her, but it's not like she did anything to me personally. So who knows...
I return my attention to my other friend while Cassie is talking to hers. Dragon is slouching on a stretcher sunbathing while occasionally taking a drink.
"Wow. You look in your element. The only thing missing is a girl applying sunscreen on you." - I snickered, taking a seat beside him.
"Rachel already did that." - He replied, boastfully.
"I stand corrected then." - I conceded, as he spread his large figure on the stretcher.
"Yeah, it's great to be here. You should enjoy the pool with Cassie because the weather is gonna change soon." - He advised glancing over at me, wearing designer sunglasses.
"Oh I definitely will in just a moment. I'm just taking my time after that hefty lunch." - I said, rubbing my belly.
"Marisol is the best. I don't think my mom has ever needed to cook anything unless it's her day off." - He commented in a humorous tone.
"I wouldn't either if I had someone like her available." - I snickered.
A moment of silence passed as we took in the scorching sunlight. It was so hot, I'm going to dip into the pool very soon.
"So... are you going to tell me where you were last night at dawn?" - I inquired, still intrigued about the peculiar disappearance.
Jalensky glared at me.
"Let it go, Quentin! It's not a big deal!" - He deflected, seriously pissed off. If he's calling me by my name then he's really mad at me.
"Whatever." - I mumbled, dismissively.
I'm not getting a straight answer apparently. It'll remain a mystery for the ages. Where did Jalensky go in the middle of the night?
It's a big house, sure. But if he wasn't in the living room, bathroom or my bedroom, then where? I'm genuinely baffled by this.
I hope I can find out eventually. Maybe he's embarrassed about something, I just wish I had a clue about what it is...
A|N: Don't worry, you'll find out eventually.
Who doesn't like a little mystery?
Yes, I love, love, love this song. I also like the film [Call Me By Your Name].
Love,
Léo.
