Layna inspected the contents of her bag. She wasn’t quite sure what was worth taking, but she figured she would need to travel as lightly as possible. She held the silicone breasts in her hands, debating them until Addie interrupted her thoughts.
“You don’t want to wear those through airport security,” her roommate said.
Layna tossed them onto her bed. “I don’t think I’ll bring them at all,” she said. “Trying to pack light.”
“But you love your boobies,” Addie said with a grin.
Layna sighed. “I do.”
“Embrace the itty bitty titty committee. It’s not bad here.” She jumped onto Layna’s bed as Layna continued to mull over her clothing options.
“I still can’t believe you’re just gonna up and leave,” Addie continued.
“I’ll be back.”
“You’re still going to a country you know nothing about and staying with long-lost family members that you never knew until two months ago.”
“It beats what I have here.”
Addie frowned. “I know. And I’m glad they’re accepting. But your Uncle Archie seems as American as they come.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Addie shrugged. “I dunno. Like he hunts his dinner and herds cattle and uses an outhouse.”
“He also fought in the Civil War over there.”
Addie snorted. “Come on, Lay, do you really think it’s a good idea?”
“I want to believe I can have some kind of family that actually gives a shit about me,” Layna said. She hesitated. “Uncle Archie may be as close to family as it gets for me.”
Addie frowned. “But you’re gonna come back here, right?”
Layna gave her friend a reassuring smile. “I plan on it.”
Addie sighed. “So, when are you leaving?”
“Soon.” She hesitated. “He’s, uh, you know, been taking care of things here and arranging our flight.”
“And then he’ll whisk you away in the night?”
At that moment, Layna’s phone rang. She did not recognize the number, but she answered it quickly.
“Do you know any Italian?” Sagittarius asked.
“Uh, no.”
“Great, I do.”
“So why did you ask me?”
“It’s a conversation starter,” he said. “To say we’re going to Italy.”
“Right.”
“We’re going to Italy.”
“Yeah, I got it.”
“Are you sure?”
“Sorry, I don’t speak in Dad jokes.”
“Hey, I’m funny.”
“Debatable.”
“I’m still the cool uncle though, right?”
“Definitely.”
“Great. I’ll pick you up.”
“You drive?”
“Driving is for mortals. I’ll poof myself over there. And then we can take those cabs to the airport like normal humans do.”
“Sounds like you’ve got it all figured out,” Layna said.
“I’m killing it at this human thing.”
Layna smiled. “I guess I’ll see you in a few, then.” She ended the call and Addie groaned.
“And there you go,” she said. “Being whisked away.”
Layna offered her an apologetic smile. “Can’t pass up the tickets he found.”
“All right,” she said with a sigh. “Just let me know how it goes, yeah? Make sure you’re still alive and all.”
“I will.”
Addie got up from the bed and hugged her tightly. When Layna pulled away, she hugged her tighter, finally letting her go when they heard three quick knocks at the door. Layna grabbed her bag quickly and left Addie alone in the apartment. Sagittarius stood in the parking lot and smiled when she appeared.
“Adventure’s callin’,” he said. “We’ve got some Gigantes to hunt.”
