As expected, the moment Segar woke up, he delivered some brutal smacking to the one clinging to him. Segar was grumpier than usual today. They had to wake up soon to catch the first bus so it would not be so crowded. It’s the weekend so many people would take a trip to Anville town.
Anville town was the cradle of what is now Colville city. It was established by a group of people in search of promising land. They wanted their life to turn the page. Although nothing much really turned out for them, at least putting the bread on the table became less of a burden. Soon, others, whose lives were also in misery, flocked to the place. This caused the government’s attention. Just a few years later, after their first proposal to Congress, Colville City was born. Having set their hand on this piece of land, they introduced the Colville industrial zone to expand the national treasury. Sure, the country’s rank on economic growth rate increased drastically, but not the life of Colville citizens. They have been fighting non-stop for something as simple as the establishment of another public school or the renovation of the local hospitals.
Anville town nowadays, given its backstory, is the most popular destination on the Weekend in Colville. It is the birthplace of the majority of the population, including Segar’s mom and dad. They were each other’s childhood sweethearts back then. If Monty is already astonished by the beauty of Colville from their bus trip, he will faint when he arrives at Anville. This town is the reason why Segar has not burnt down this city yet. Segar’s family goes there only on special occasions like New Year's Eve. He used to beg his mother to let him stay there for summer break during his years at elementary school. Despite the government’s intention of making this place their gold mine by draining every last drop of resources here, Anville town remains untamed. They still have rows of lively trees running across the roads. Their ponds, which are far away from the factories, are still as pure as the blue sky on a summer day. Their people, freed from the endless cycle of work, home, work, and so on, will welcome you with their generous hearts the moment you step on their soil. A utopia lies next to the dystopia born by it, you can say.
“Kids! Don’t forget to pack your toothbrushes and some extra clothes. We might stay there for the night!”
Just as she is about to go upstairs to check on them. Segar and Monty quickly put on their backpacks and run down.
“Don’t forget your phone! You don’t wanna miss anything from Lieutenant Montana!” - Segar’s mother reminds them.
“We have it in our pockets!” - Monty replies with a bright smile, despite his throbbing shoulder from all the smacking earlier.
“Great! Let’s go!”
Even though they caught the first bus of the day, it was still packed with people. Fortunately, there are three seats left, enough for all of them. Segar’s mother recognized one of her co-workers and took the seat next to her so that they could have a chat. The remaining empty pair of seats were for her son and his new friend so they could have fun. However, the boys are still sleepy. Back when they were in school, waking up at 5:00 A.M for revision before class was no big deal. But now, achieving their goal has spoiled them a lot. Segar and Monty gently lean back in their seats with their eyes slowly shut. The loud and chaotic chatter around them can not prevent them from dozing off.
After a long bus ride that took two hours, Segar and his mother could not wait for the grand feast that grandpa and grandma had prepared. They are always like that whenever someone from the family is coming. As for Monty, well, just being himself. As soon as he got off the bus, he pulled out his phone and took a whole album of the surroundings. The fresh air, the trees on the side of the road, and even a stray cat made him excited. Segar could not do anything about it besides mocking him. At this rate, he will find a bag and try to bring the air of Colville back to Xalos.
7:15 A.M, after another fifteen minutes of walking on the dirt route, they arrived at Segar’s grandparents’ house. From the outside, the building looks like a countryside cottage that rich people would buy and bring their family here for vacation. It has no front gate as grandma and grandpa think it will just be a nuisance. A lock on the front door is enough. Even if a thief tries to break in, he will come out with a sad face as he misjudges the house by its outlook. Their front yard is another spotlight. It is the definition of simple but effective, in triggering Monty’s excitement at least. Grandpa and grandma took great care of it. Along the path to the front door are six planters, with three on each side facing each other. Grandpa is into anything green, while grandma's favorite theme is colorful, so, the pathway is their boundaries. Again, Monty took out his phone and created the album “Segar’s Cottage”.
Segar’s mother shouts out “We’re here!” as they pass through the front gate. Segar could already hear his grandfather’s speedy footsteps. He must be smoking in his so-called relaxing corner in the backyard.
The front door is opened. Grandfather quickly steps out and gives each one of them, even Monty, a hug. It must feel like forever for him to see Segar again since last New Year's Eve.
“Ohoho! I thought that it would be my funeral for you to come again, child!” - Segar’s terrible sense of humor may run in the family.
“And you must be Monty, Segar’s boy-friend!”
“Gramp!” - Yes, it does run in the family!
