After all that fighting, Sam felt worn out yet happy. They gave her a basic training uniform and let her shower in the women's change room. Sam finished as quickly as she could and went to have lunch with Mr. Rodrigo and the other bodyguards in a conference room. She was dressed in a plain white cotton shirt and a pair of black shorts, like all the other bodyguards.
The room was big, with sleek glass walls. It was very high up, on the 15th story of the 20 story building, so you had an amazing view of the busy city. There was a big white rectangular table at the center of the room and black chairs surrounding it. The floor had a black and white checkerboard design, matching the table and chairs. Mr. Rodrigo and all the other bodyguards were already seated, and there was an empty chair next to him and Harry, which was presumably for her.
There were boxes of pizza piled at the center of the table, along with a few packs of paper plates, stacks of napkins, and 3 cases of soda. They were all untouched and unopened, just waiting there invitingly. The other bodyguards were all seated and talking quietly amongst themselves, while Mr. Rodrigo was on his phone. That was, until Sam walked in.
Mr. Rodrigo heard her come in, so he put his phone facedown on the table and smiled. "There you are, Sam! Have a seat, you must be starving," Everyone went silent. Sam walked in shyly and sat down on the chair next to him. "Thank you, Mr. Rodrigo." She was starving and looking forward to having some food in her stomach. Harry grinned at her from her left, and she smiled back. Mr. Rodrigo gestured for them to dig in, so they obliged.
Everything was orderly distributed, and everyone was satisfied. They ate in silence, everyone trying to scarf down their food as fast as possible without seeming as though they hadn't eaten in days. Sam quietly observed that only one third of the bodyguards were females. Mr. Rodrigo was on his phone, not taking notice of them or eating anything.
Within 10 minutes, they all finished their food. It was only then when Mr. Rodrigo put his phone down and announced that there would be a 30 minute break, so they were free to do anything they want. Lots of people left, but Sam decided to stay since she wasn't familiar with the layout of the building yet. Harry decided to stay too.
He made small conversation with her and they got to know each other better. Sam found out that Harry was 18, and had a longtime girlfriend. They also added each other's phone numbers. Harry was easygoing, and had a great sense of humor. Sam was glad that she had at least gotten to know one person.
30 minutes passed by pretty quickly. The other bodyguards had started pouring in when there were 5 minutes left. During the 30 minutes, Mr. Rodrigo didn't move at all and stayed glued to his phone. He could've been mistaken for a statue if not for his expression changes. He had on a neutral expression, and then smiled, and the next thing you knew, he's frowning.
Sam could only guess what was going on. Maybe he invested in the stock market, or maybe the company's revenue went down. Or maybe he was just watching Instagram. At one o'clock, which was when the half an hour of over, he slid his phone in his suit's pocket and stood up. He looked around the room, making sure that everyone was there and watching him.
He cleared his throat, then told everyone that the rest of the training was over due to current circumstances and for Sam to stay after everyone left to discuss things. Everyone was surprised, as this had never happened before, but did as they were told and left.
One by one, they exited the room and presumably went to the locker room to get their belongings. Harry said a quick goodbye to Sam before he left, which she returned. She felt very anxious, and wondered whether her testing would be rescheduled or if she didn't meet the standards. She could also be hired, she supposed.
She remained where she was as she watched everyone else leave. Harry was the last to leave and he silently shut the glass door behind him. Sam was alone with Mr. Rodrigo now. His brow were furrowed and his forehead was creased. He was clearly agitated and anxious. Sam wondered what happened.
After a few moments, he realized that everyone has left and put his phone down to address Sam. Sam could feel her palms sweating. Mr. Rodrigo grimaced, then revealed the shocking news. He took a deep breath, and said, "Sam, what I tell you now must be only between us, and you cannot even breathe a word of this to anyone else."
That was certainly not what Sam had expected. She felt confused and worried. She replied, "Sure Mr. Rodrigo, I can promise that." He took out a briefcase which had been supposedly on the other side of his chair, which Sam didn't see before, and took out a piece of paper.
He took a pen off of his breast pocket on his suit and slid the paper towards her. It was a bodyguard contract! She looked up at him, shocked. "I've decided to hire you, Sam," he told her solemnly, "Even though we didn't finish the testing. I've deemed your skills beyond standards and we need you to start working right away."
Sam's eyes widened considerably, and stared for a while before managing to stammer, "Y-you're sure, Mr. Rodrigo?" He nodded. "After you sign the contract, I'll tell you about the situation that has just arisen. Take your time to read it through though, I don't want you rushing to sign it just to be hired."
Sam nodded and picked up the contract. All the things on there were pretty basic, and she didn't have a problem with any of them. She skimmed over it a second time just to be sure. Her father had been paranoid enough to give her a magnifying glass to check if there were hidden texts.
Mr. Rodrigo's eyes kept flickering over to her, as she looked over the contract with a magnifying glass. One of his eyebrows were slightly raised, as though questioning why she would use a magnifying glass to look it over. Sam found nothing, so she put the magnifying glass back into her bag, which she had bought with her.
Seeing Mr. Rodrigo looking at her so expectantly, she told him politely that she needed to talk with her parents first before signing anything. He looked down somberly, then turned back to her. He seemed almost desperate. "Can you call them right now, and put them on speaker? I'd like to get this done as soon as possible, as we need you on duty now."
Something really serious must've happened, Sam mused. "Alright," she responded, "I'll call them." She took out her phone, opened it, and dialed her parents' number. It rang for a few moments, before it clicked, meaning that they picked up.
