Laura sighed after a few seconds of silence, returning to her food, not talking to him.
While they were getting ready for bed, Miles started to think about Laura. She hadn't talked to him since dinner, and he was now starting to get much more worried that he had done something extremely wrong. He really wanted to talk to her, but he didn't know what to say, and even if he went over to talk to her, he was fully convinced that she would either just completely ignore him, or she would get even more angry at him and, again, ignore him, or worse, yell at him. So he decided to just push it down like he had done for the rest of the day, but it didn't work. He kept on thinking about it, and he simply couldn't stop. His mind had once again gone into the evil spiral of nervous thoughts. Yet, for some reason, he just couldn't bring himself to ask her what he had done wrong. He thought he made it pretty clear that he was taking Collones' warning seriously, didn't he?
After thinking about it for a few seconds, he knew he needed to have shown it more. God, he hated it. Why was it so hard for him to show that he was listening? Or for them to understand that he was listening? Pretty much every time someone has told him something serious, they didn't think he was actually listening, even though they had his full attention. He just never showed enough for their satisfaction. It had been like that ever since he could remember.
Miles thought things would be different here because of how well everything had gone until now. Turns out, nothing ever changes.
Honestly, trying to sleep when your mind is racing with thoughts is hard. You try to sleep and ignore the thoughts, but you can't.
Miles didn't know how long he had been unable to sleep, but the others were sleeping, so it had at least been a while. It was dark and quiet, only quiet breathing and a few quiet snores here and there.
Miles had started out just wondering why Laura was so angry with him, which, of course, led him to think about many other things. Like, how did he even end up here? Why had he ended up here? How come he just accepted his new life just like that? With barely any questions? One day he just randomly appeared in a new world where people had powers, and the next day he started working as a maid. A maid. And unluckily enough, he didn't know any of the answers to any of his questions, which just left him even more confused and nervous. Not that being nervous was new for him at all.
He was nearly always nervous, except for when he was alone in his room, preferably listening to music, but it was hard to be alone when you had to work all day and shared a room with who knows how many people. Nor was it easy in his 'past life' because of his sister and mother. He still loved them though, even if they were bad at leaving him alone. They were very social people and 'recharged' by hanging out with a ton of people. Meanwhile Miles was the complete opposite. His social battery got drained quickly when he was with other people, and the only way to recharge it was by being alone in his room- his comfort zone. Luckily, as he got older, he learned to extend the period until his social battery died, and even if it was pretty much dead, to still act like it wasn't. But that was just his life, and he got used to it always being like that. It’s not like it would ever change, so he might as well have started getting used to it by an early age.
