The sound of the waves across the shore comforted me, as I felt tears falling down my face. They dripped down onto the light sand, making powerful dark marks. What an effect tears can have, on something so vulnerable and defenseless. But then again, the sand, as defenseless looking as it is, has bits of glass and quartz in it. Bits that can make your feet bleed all the way home. I tried wiping my tears, but they resisted. My arm was damp and cold, from so many hours of wiping. Better just to not at all. I paced back and forth trying to calm down. My head was pounding, my heart was pounding, my eyes were dry as dust, my mouth tasted like metal, and my hands were shaking. I focused on my hands, bruised and calloused, like I spent hours playing on a children's playground, although this wasn't from that. I wish it was. I coughed and a mix of spit and blood flew out. My whole body hurt. Then I felt the warmth of the sun glaring down at me. This wonderful blazing light, no one could change it, no one could hurt it, no one could make it cry. I want to be like the sun, potent forever, forever forcible, forever powerful. Powerful. What a word. When you think of power, you think of someone important. Someone who can lift the earth. Someone who can kill someone in the blink of an eye. But when someone is powerful, they often lose sight of who they are. Maybe I'm losing sight before I even lift off the ground. The sun blanketed the beach with a beautiful orange light and I felt I could wrap myself in it and fall asleep like I was an infant again. Safe. Oh, I wish to be safe again. I sniffled and planted my footing steady and I watched the waves one more time. Suddenly, I heard rustling behind me, and next, I felt a sharp blow into my back. Blood filled my throat. Everything stopped. And then everything was silent.
