Rebirth in the Darkness

Burning joss paper

Burning joss paper

Nov 06, 2023

The apocalypse is just six days away, and today is the day scheduled to make the final payment to the Phantom Glade villagers.

Surprisingly, R-coins has risen to five dollars each! I can withdraw 250 million! I know that there will be more significant increases in the following days, but that won't matter to me. When the terrifying apocalypse arrives, whether it's R-coins or cash, they will both become worthless. The only valuable currency will be joss paper.

10 a.m. in the morning, I sold all my R-coins and cashed out 250 million.

In the afternoon at 3 p.m., as arranged, I arrived at Phantom Glade with the 100 million final payment. The ten billion joss paper notes were ready, each one meticulously crafted. The villagers were genuinely kind and only accepted the agreed-upon 100 million, refunding the eight million down payment.

The ten delivery trucks I ordered also arrived, one by one, transporting the packaged joss paper to the crematory.

Inside the crematory, I poured all the handcrafted items bought from Mr. Milton's shop into the furnace. Then, I directed the truck drivers to pour box after box of joss paper into the incinerator.

The last truck left at midnight, and I returned alone to the crematory.

On a silent night, with a chilling breeze, the empty crematory felt eerie and terrifying. But I had experienced much more horrifying scenes in the past life, and I dared not let my guard down. Even though the ten billion joss paper notes had been manufactured, they were not truly mine until they were burned to ashes together with the paper containing my name and birthdate in the incinerator.

In the eerie stillness of the deep night, the crematory roared to life, billowing thick smoke. I dragged my weary body, throwing bundles of joss paper into the furnace. As the stacks of joss paper disappeared into the incinerator, I distinctly felt a mysterious essence flowing into my body.

This sensation is indescribable, but I knew that the joss paper balance in my underworld account was continuously increasing.

As I gazed at the blazing furnace, I couldn't help but reminisce about the struggles in the previous life, where I had encountered far too many malicious and greedy individuals. I had believed that my heart had been sealed off, protected by layers of concrete. Even all the preparations I am making now were primarily for my self-preservation.

But in this world, there are still good people. Perhaps they, like the old me in the last life, trying to endure and survive in this post-apocalyptic world, enduring torment, and eventually succumbing to despair…

My abilities are limited, and I couldn't save everyone. However, I should be able to protect the villagers of Phantom Glade. While buying the joss paper, Mr. Milton inadvertently revealed his birthdate, and I also knew his full name. As long as his birthdate was accurate, I could burn some joss paper for him.

Looks like Mr. Milton is a kind and trustworthy man who lived in the village for a life time. I believe he would use this joss paper to safeguard all the villagers.

These simple villagers worked diligently for twenty days to manufacture these joss paper notes, hoping that these notes could also protect them in times of need. On the other hand, in case the joss paper created after the apocalypse was still usable, preserving Phantom Glade was tantamount to preserving a joss paper production facility.

I burned ten million in Mr. Milton's name, which should be enough to keep everyone in the village safe. Just in case Mr. Milton's birthdate turned out to be fake, I wouldn't incur substantial losses.

In the midst of the blazing fire, I watched the last joss paper burn to ashes…
