They were on a date. This was a date right? Bee’s first date with Maddi. Wait, no. That probably isn’t right. The two of them must have gone on dates prior to the memory loss. This type of day was likely a normal occurrence in their lives, but that didn’t mean Bee knew how to act or what to do.
Not only was Bee still unable to speak, she didn’t even know how long they had been together, so how was she supposed to know what to do on this supposed date?!
Luckily for her, it seemed that Maddi had the day fully planned out for them and all Bee had to do was follow along through the city.
Having left their shared apartment on the 13th floor Bee had watched Maddi use her fingerprint to open the interior side of the door as they exited their home, and then lock the exterior as they left. It seemed to her that their building was very updated and had top notch security for its residents.
Are my prints already loaded into the system too? Inwardly she asked herself this question, but thought they must not yet be since she had just moved in. It seemed like this was just another thing she didn’t have. First her memory, then a phone, and now a key.
Maybe these things were all linked though? Bee wondered if her memory problems were something Maddi knew about, and maybe that was why she didn’t have certain things? That could be probable, right?
Without realizing it, Bee had been standing alone in the hallway as she sorted through her jumbled thoughts, unaware that Maddi was no longer next to her.
“Are you coming?” A sweet voice rang out, breaking up her train of thought. Bee took one last glance to the lock on the door before turning to follow Maddi towards the elevators.
After the pair stepped into the mirrored elevator, Maddi selected the lobby button and the doors quietly closed as they began to descend. As they slowly continued downward Bee sensed eyes on her. Fearful of another pop-up she glanced to her side and in the mirrored reflection caught Maddi’s swift movements. While not 100% sure, it seemed as though the other girl had once again hidden her phone in her pocket.
Just like earlier this morning.
It’s fine. I’m just on edge. There’s no Selection.
Bee continued to calm herself down, pushing the phone to the back of her mind as they arrived at the lobby and exited the elevator together.
Maddi had casually grabbed her arm in a familiar manner, the two of them walking side by side out the main doors of the building. They headed out into the city, Bee was still fully unaware of their destination, letting Maddi lead her on their way.
A shopping district soon came into view. The arm linked around her own gently tugged her towards each store along their path.
Clear silver eyes watched with glee as golden eyes were covered by different pairs of glasses. Maddi had collected a tray of options for Bee to try on, and Bee seeing her happy face could do nothing but entertain her. It was sudden, but once again she saw the phone flicker behind her in the mirror as she swapped to a new pair of glasses.
Bee again chose to ignore it.
Their next stop was a neat and tidy clothing store full of pastels, bows, and lace. Clearly this was where most of Bee’s current wardrobe was from, and showed that Maddi paid attention to her supposed taste in attire.
She was led to try on multiple outfits that were brought to the fitting room by her golden retriever girlfriend. With the peppy way Maddi was running back and forth through the store you could almost see a tail wagging gleefully behind her.
While clasping the hook and eye on the side of the ivory dress that had been thrown over the door, she saw it again. At the top of the door, there was the same phone, the same hand.
The phone was gone in a flash.
Why would she focus on me in secret? We’re already dating… does she want candid photos? Is it something the past me knew about? Agreed to even?
Her silver ponytail gently swayed in the wind as she walked with Maddi towards their next destination. Walking down the street she continued to catch the reflection of that same phone in all the reflective surfaces along their path. At this point she could no longer ignore it, or push the thoughts aside. However, with no way to speak up all she could do was watch and wait for a SELECTION to give her a chance to bring it up.
The pair soon arrived at the train platform. Bee happily sat herself down at one of the many empty seats, her feet grateful for the break after standing most of the day.
“I’ll go get us some drinks from the vending machine, be right back!”
Maddi smiled brightly as she made her way across the platform towards the lowly humming machines. While crouched down, partially out of Bee’s sight she took this chance to go through her saved photos and videos from their date. “These moments are all mine.” She giggled softly to herself as she updated her wallpaper photo. Task completed, the drinks were purchased and she headed back to her person.
Sitting quietly at the otherwise deserted benches Bee tried to keep herself from dozing off. The fatigue of the day had finally come crashing down, and as her eyes continued to slowly blink in their last attempts to stay awake she caught sight of a blip of fuchsia to her side.
Adrenaline surged within her, and her eyes shot open, the earlier fatigue forgotten. Cold sweat was beginning to run down her forehead as she tried to find where it went.
No! Not another pop-up! She whipped her body fiercely to the side to look towards … nothing.
No pink, no red, no one. All she could see were the train tracks and concrete walls. Everything was gray and devoid of any color.
I must just be too tired… There’s nothing there. Bee couldn’t handle any other alternative at this moment. Having died once already, her mental state was still in shambles and she knew that any small push could send her over the edge.
Still staring at the tracks, a cool touch grazed her cheek bringing her out of her trance. The chilled can of milk coffee was pressed to her face and the tips of Maddi’s fingers gently brushed along the edge of her lips. “It’s your lucky day, they had your favorite.”
Bee looked up towards Maddi, the warmth of the setting sun behind her golden hair. An angel. I can’t lose her.
This thought was something deeply flowing inside her veins. Maybe it was part of her past finally coming to light, trying to remind her of her overflowing affection for this sunny girl before her.
The sweet coffee tasted bitter on her tongue as Bee’s guilt towards Maddi surged. She knew this dependence was wrong, she knew that she was using Maddi’s love in order to keep her by her side.
But if Maddi knew about the memory loss, and that Bee had no idea who she was…
What if she doesn’t want to stay with me?
She forced the coffee down in a large ‘gulp’ that pained her throat. Small sips followed as Bee tried to not only push aside the burning sensation, but also her worries.
The wind picked up and the rumble from the tracks grew louder as the train approached. “This one’s us, let’s go!” Maddi pulled Bee up and led her to the open doors, and as Bee looked up after crossing the gap she once again saw the flicker of fuchsia.
No.
It can’t be that. Please don’t let it be that.
The loud warning signal of the doors closing behind her caused her to flinch, and just like that, the colorful hue was gone.
Once they arrived at their station Maddi continued to lead Bee along the same as she had done all day. Accustomed to this behavior, Bee obediently followed. No thoughts, head empty. This was the best cure she could come up with from her stress on the train.
Looking at their surroundings Bee saw the buildings were no longer reaching the clouds and it was a sweet row of string-lit trees amongst the cozy shops. It was like coming home, and the calming atmosphere instantly reminded Bee of Maddi. This was the perfect ending location for their date.
Everything was beautiful.
As the sun continued to set the streetlamps lit up, leading the two down the romantically lit path until they reached the door of a jeweler. A quaint two-story home stood before them. The lower section seamlessly renovated into a sparkling showcase of various gems and designs.
Maddi wrapped around Bee’s arm like a koala, and while tugging her along to the entrance she felt the silver-haired girl stiffen.
Pink.
In the reflection of the shop window Bee had seen it yet again. A chill ran down her spine as she swiftly turned around to see behind them.
This time she caught it.
The flash of fuchsia blipped into a small alleyway across the street. Could it be another pop-up? Where was it leading her then?
[DING!]
[SELECTION]
[JEWELER] // [ALLEYWAY]
Maddi’s silver eyes were widely staring towards Bee, wondering why she had become immovable like a statue. She was unaware of the brightly glowing blue light between them, and could only be curious as to what was wrong as they stared at one another.
Well, they were staring at each other according to Maddi’s point of view at least.
Bee knew she should choose to follow Maddi and continue their date. Leaving at an important moment would be inappropriate… right?
But what if the pink flashes she had seen all day were a clue? What if it was a SELECTION?
What if they had been a warning?
If she were to ignore it would she be safe? Or would she die yet again?
Either option was unsafe, but one would at least let her explore. One option would let her follow her own impulses.
She didn’t want to continue being in the dark.
Soft blue lights flickered into the twinkling lights among the trees. “I’ll be right back. I think I saw a stray cat across the street that needs help.” Bee patted Maddi’s hands away, “You stay here since you’re allergic, okay?” Bee didn’t read into the nonsense spewing from her lips, who even knew if Maddi was allergic to cats!
Her body had been once again overtaken, and all she could do was allow it to lead her towards the alleyway. Ignoring the fact that Maddi didn’t dispute the allergy, and the SELECTION seemed to know more than she would like to admit.
Chunky black suede heels clicked on the concrete, slowly making their way to the corner of the building across the road.
There it was again. A small bit of pink tucked behind the wall, it was as though it was teasing her, leading her along.
But… There was no glow! It wasn’t a SELECTION?!
