The Forest of Lost Souls

Chapter Seven: Stranger to the rescue

Chapter Seven: Stranger to the rescue

Nov 16, 2023

Running endlessly, knowing all too well that if I break the glass, then I'll have to fly. There's no one to catch me if I take a dive. I'm scared of changing, the days stay the same. The world is spinning but only in gray. I finally stopped running, I looked at what appeared to be an abandoned chapel. It looked like it was a straight out of a fairy tale, gleaming white pillars, everest green moss, decorated with flowers, of all different colors and breeds, from red roses to orange carnations. I felt safer here, the chaos seemed to disappear into the distance, though my guard was held high. In my head, a cord was struck on the old organ in the back left corner of the church stage, a lute was softly being played by a gentle breeze. Up above a chorus, chanted a hymn to their god. I felt at peace, even though I support all religions I fell at my knees. I began to sing a prayer,

“Oh, misty eye of the mountain below, keep careful watch of my brothers' souls, and should the sky be filled with fire and smoke, keep watching over Durin's sons..”  The organ begane it’s chord, the lute plucked it’s strings, as I continued, “If this is to end in fire. Then we should all burn together. Watch the flames climb high into the night. Calling out father oh, stand by and we will, watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side and if we should die tonight then we should all die together. Raise a glass of wine for the last time, calling out father oh, prepare as we will, watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side. Desolation comes upon the sky, now I see fire, inside the mountain. I see fire, burning the trees. And I see fire, hollowing souls. I see fire, blood in the breeze. And I hope that you remember me..” a violin picked up a key, and harmonized with the other instruments, as I began once more, “Oh, should my people fall, then surely I'll do the same. Confined in mountain halls, we got too close to the flame. Calling out father oh, hold fast and we will watch the flames burn auburn on the mountain side. Desolation comes upon the sky..” as I moved to the second chorus, a choir of angels harmonized behind me, up in the risers, and we sang on, “Now I see fire, inside the mountain. I see fire, burning the trees. I see fire, hollowing souls. I see fire, blood in the breeze. And I hope that you remember me. And if the night is burning, I will cover my eyes, for if the dark returns then my brothers will die. And as the sky is falling down It crashed into this lonely town. And with that shadow upon the ground I hear my people screaming out. Now I see fire, inside the mountains. I see fire, burning the trees. I see fire, hollowing souls. I see fire, blood in the breeze. I see fire. And I see fire. And I see fire..” the choir and instruments died out as I sang the final chord, “And I see fire burn auburn on the mountain side.” out of the silence a clang of metal hit the marble flooring, I jumped turning only to be faced by a male, he seemed to be one of those old timey plague doctors, I silently cursed under my breath wondering why I was going through this. I could easily tell, he had been hunting me like every other damn creature in this hell of a forest. He ran at me, his words muffled and empty. It was like a teen show where the one character would run at the other that stood their ground, motionless as the runner stopped abruptly, rising dust and blowing the motionless characters hair back at the force of speed so quickly decreasing. I did nothing, staring at him blankly. He brought up his arm in the air, a medical knife in hand. But just like that, it fell from his hand as a silver sword pierced his coat and drew quickly spreading blood, to think. I can't tell whether this forest wants me dead, or whether it wants me alive. He fell to the ground, and I finally saw his attacker, she looked to be about my age, she had eyes like shining orbs of a black abyss, pale skin, and a beautiful white outfit.

“¿Está bien señorita, ese pecador, no le hizo daño, verdad?(Are you alright miss, that sinner, he didn't hurt you did he?)” she seemed to be genuine, but I wasn't be sure

“si gracias por salvarme.(yes, thank you for saving me.)” I replied. She began to explain who she was Dina Angela Clark but that others called her judge angels, and how her friend was the shadow I had named Dusk, and how he had sensed I was in danger and had asked Dina to find me and help me get out of the forest, and that she had heard my prayer, how the angels excepted my prayer which helped lead her to me.

“Wow..” was all I could say after she finished, she was genuine, for sure. But now, we have a forest to escape. Together.
