Kaleb stumbles his way towards the kitchen again and finds a cleaver knife on the floor next to the counter, only the adrenaline is helping him now. He scurries towards it on his knees and hands hoping not to be seen by Asa. He gets a hold of the knife. Just when he was about to sprint toward Ada, he noticed the silence. He sits still behind the counter holding the knife with both hands.
"Why is it so quiet" He whispers to himself confused about what was going on.
There is a deadly silence. The stillness ate the whole room up. It was as if someone had already won and someone had died. The silence was worrying and frightening.
All the action and fighting was gone in an instant. This made him pay more attention to his surroundings. His breathing was rapid from all the action that just happened, Exhausted he slumped down and leaned next to the counter. He couldn’t clasp the knife right, because of his sweaty hands so he dropped it on his lap and closed his eyes tightly wincing in pain.
As if the wendigo heard his complaint the death chilling roar filled up the whole room and it sounded like it was miles away. Betsy was no longer fighting. It was now a game of hide and seek with a wendigo. The whole place was filled with smoke and large debris left and right. The dark wooden floor was now filled with water because of the broken bathroom. All the chaos ensued by Betsy and Asa were gone and left nothing but destruction.
The heavy smoke was clearing and Kaleb could see Ada's long and lanky index finger twitch. Slowly waking up from her 5-minute sleep. If Kaleb could see Ada through the thin smoke, Asa could see him even better if he moved from behind the counter.
Kaleb decided he couldn't stay behind the counter forever so he came up with the most overused distraction ever. He picked up a small piece of rubble and chucked it far across the room thinking the wendigo would go and investigate the slight sound.
No splash
No thud
No sound
Just silence filled the room and it was suffocating. The noise of clicking only disturbed Kaleb’s mind even more
Asa already knew where Kaleb was hidden, but she didn't know where Betsy was. The smoke was clearing up quickly and Betsy was nowhere to be seen. If Asa attacked Kaleb she knew Betsy would come out of nowhere and protect him. Asa was astonished by Betsy's abilities, all they did was underestimate her skills and power and she held her own against someone twice her size. The family saw Betsy as a burden because she took up so much of their time by teaching her how to hunt and hide. The family hid her in the shadows so she wouldn’t tarnish the family’s name.
Kaleb started to wonder where the small piece of rubble had landed because he didn't hear one speck of a sound. Only the clicks that followed every second in the silence.
His distraction failed so he tried five more times but nothing, not a single thing could be heard. 'Why can't I hear anything?' He thought to himself. He then decided to go even bigger and throw a rock about the same size as his whole arm. He swings it from the back of his head and… Nothing. The deafening silence still controlled the entire room and the obnoxious clicks along with it. Asa sees small pebbles being thrown up in the air from the kitchen counter. She almost laughs at how idiotic Kaleb's plan was. Asa also considers the small remains of the wooden floor and walls being thrown but then disappear when they reach somewhere near the roof.
Asa locks eyes with the small debris but then sees it disappear. She does it again when Kaleb chucks a huge piece of debris and locks her eyes on it. This time she makes sure not to blink.
CRACK
The silence was interrupted when the huge rock somehow hit Asa on the left eye. Kaleb finally makes a run for it while Ada is finally sitting up, dumbfounded. Kaleb plunges the cleaver knife into Ada's chest and slices it horizontally. Ada gives out the most excruciating scream enough to make anyone's ears bleed. The wound lets out a cold breeze instead of blood and a glowing blue heart can be seen beating loudly inside the hollow chest. Kaleb grabs the heart and rips it out of Ada's chest and it starts to beat even faster. Ada falls onto the wet floor in agonizing pain. Kaleb couldn't use the debris from the wooden floor to make a fire because it was wet, so he ran back to the room he was hiding in a while ago.
Asa in utter confusion didn't know how that rock hit her. It was going to fall in the other direction. She then takes a look up, on the roof and feels completely and utterly stupid.
Betsy was hiding on the kitchen ceiling the whole time. She was catching the small pieces of rocks the whole time. She can know someone's whereabouts through scent and sound. When Kaleb touches a rock she can smell the stench on it. She was in a completely different skill set when she was in her Wendigo form. Her two senses smell and sound surpass any wild animal or creature that walks on the earth.
She was a beast that could walk silently in anyone's shadow.
Asa had chills run down her back.
'How long has she been hanging up there? When did she get up there?' Asa questions herself and her abilities as well. Betsy didn't realize that Asa was looking directly at her, What she does know is that Kaleb had ripped out Ada's heart and is now running away with it. Believing she hasn't been caught yet she starts to crawl on the ceiling like a spider trying to follow Kaleb silently.
Asa of course doesn't let that happen. She grabs Betsy by the horns and slams her down onto the wet floor causing her whole body to go through the floorboard.
Ada was now up on her feet ready to take what belonged to her with Asa they both sprinted towards Kaleb, who had already locked himself in the room he was previously in.
Kaleb rushes to get the sticks, rocks, twigs, and dry leaves from under the bed to start the fire. He scratched the rocks together once and it sparks a small fire but not enough to burn the heart.
As soon as the small spark produced a hint of fire, the door went flying.
Ada was the first one to launch herself towards Kaleb. Kaleb whips out Ada's heart blue-pumping heart and squeezes it. Ada falters right next to him and falls onto the floor. Asa was next she hurled herself over the small fire putting it out. Asa turns and sees the small gun pointed right between her eyes. Kaleb pulls the trigger and fires directly onto Asa's head.
By the time Asa had woken up, she was lying next to her twin sister's dead frozen body. Asa's heart was already ripped out of her chest and ready to be burnt by Kaleb's hands. The whole family came downstairs to see the chaos that had ensued. This was all planned but the outcome was not.
Betsy was supposed to be dead.
Kaleb was just an unexpected variable but they didn't think it would change Betsy's fate.
They stopped Kaleb before he threw Asa's heart into the pit of fire he had created in a few minutes. Betsy was knocked out unconscious under the floorboard. Ada was dead. Finally, the place was turned into a war zone.
This wasn't part of the plan at all.
Kaleb, still confused about the whole thing, tells the family what happened."There was a monster attacking me! I have proof I sw-" Kaleb cried out until he was rudely interrupted by Joshua, the eldest sibling.
"Hah, nice one Jaques ya basically killed Asa, genius, or is it, Ada? Asa is the smart one and Ada is the dumb one…right… I dunno I could neva tell the difference between em?" Joshua says, shrugging his elbows.
Jaques sighed in frustration. Rubbing his right eye with the palm of his hands, he yawns and walks away. He takes his hands out of his pockets and throws a necklace with a key onto the floor. He leaves the scene like it was trash waiting for somebody else to pick it up.
"It's Ada she's dead"Finch commented.
Kaleb mumbles with a blank expression."What?"
"You killed Ada."
"Who?"
"The wendigo."
"Th-The Wendigo?" Kaleb asks dumbfounded.
Betsy grabs Kaleb by his arm and snatches the key that Jaques threw on the floor. She leads Kaleb back to her room and tries to explain everything that just happened outside. She sits down on the floor and takes a deep breath in and then exhales.
"I do not know how 'The Bunny Storm' started, but I can stop it. I think,’" Betsy says fiddling with her fingers.
"What are you talking about? Tell me what just happened outside!" Kaleb yelled demanding answers
Betsy pauses and tries to find the best way to explain. "My family has been cursed with the Wendigo spirits. I believe we can turn into Wendigos whenever we want."
"Wait, why?" Kaleb asks confused about the circumstances
"I do not know" Betsy answers shrugging her shoulders.
"So…what did you mean, you can stop the Bunny Storm?” Kaleb asks trying to find a way to understand.
"My family would kill me before I do, Well they're trying to kill me right now."
"Why?"
"This whole village is being covered by a barrier that doesn't allow normal people to leave. The Wendigos can spread the barrier and spread the storm across the world." Betsy explains while using her arms and hands as a model.
"So the Wendigos are trying to take over the world?" Kaleb asked doubting every word she said.
"Not just the wendigos, there are more barriers spread around the world and creatures trying to take over. I can break the barriers which stop them from spreading different types of 'The Bunny Storms'" Betsy answered with a triumphant smile.
"How do you know about the outside world"
"This thing told me" Betsy pulls out the same bunny Kaleb saw outside in the corridor. She just pulled it out of nowhere and held it outwards holding it with both of her hands. Kaleb took one step back and asked in disgust.
"A rabbit?"
"It's a genie, I also think it was the one who started all this," Betsy says while petting its fluffy head
"A genie?"
"You don't believe me?"
"No"
"It's the reason why I'm able to talk right now"
"Alright then, you're blind, right? Ask for sight"
"This'll be my last wish…I was thinking about it anyway."
"What were the other two?" Kaleb asks in disbelief.
"To be able to speak and for the food. I should've been more specific though. The provision will only provide two to three people during the storm."
"So why didn't you just wish for your family to lose their powers so they wouldn't stop you from breaking the barrier? Or wish for the barrier to break itself?f" Kaleb asks in confusion
"... oh I didn’t think about that," Betsy mumbles while scratching her head
"Are you brainless this storm would have been over by now!" Kaleb screams at the top of his lungs. So many people had died and it could’ve been stopped if Betsy could’ve just wished it away. "Well, do it now!"
"No," Betsy retorts flatly without looking at Kaleb focusing on petting the rabbit.
"No?!" Kaleb repeats in disbelief
"I want sight"
"What are you talking about!?"
"I want to see"
"Can’t you see how much the village is suffering because of this storm?" Kaleb asks trying to reason with a despicable person.”We’re out there trying to survive!”
"I only brought you here, so my family could kill you"
"What?"
"I knew one of them would try to get rid of me during the storm. It would be the perfect time to get rid of the food supply and try to eat me, so I brought you along so they would kill you, instead of me." Betsy explains in a nonchalant tone.
"H-How could you-"
"Wouldn't you"
"What?-"
"Wouldn't you do the same thing?" Betsy asks
Betsy tried to justify her action which made Kaleb speechless. His eyebrow furrowed and his breathing became rapid. He clenched his fist tightly and let out a big huff. Fear and anger filled his body. Fear of everything that was going on, plus Betsy's ignorance and self-centered choices. Kaleb picked her up by the shirt until her feet were no longer touching the ground then punched her across the face letting her slide across the floor.
"Why would I do that to you boneheaded beast? I don't even know you."
"Well then, I know you, 'REGGY' or is it Kaleb? You lied about your name because all you do is, take and, take and, take and, take what's not yours. If that's what you live for, wouldn't you do the same as me?" Betsy said trying to show Kaleb’s true colors. Betsy was doing the village a favor by getting rid of their notorious thief. “The storm isn’t the only thing destroying lives and families, but you did too!”
"ARE you saying that I should die because I steal?"
"From the people that feed you and shelter you."
"They took it from me in the first place!"
"I'm doing exactly what you're doing… Taking what's supposed to be mine"
"My mother was just an AVERAGE hunter and yet they stole all of her supplies during the storm knowing well we wouldn't survive without it. You were born without the ability to talk or see. It never belonged to you in the first place."Kaleb disputed Betsy's claims with a roar. The family had heard part of the dilemma but more importantly, they heard Betsy talk. Betsy finally grew tired of arguing with Kaleb and grabbed the small rabbit by its soft and fluffy ears.
"I wish I could see with my eyes."
"No!" Kaleb screams at the top of his lungs at Betsy's god-awful and inconsiderate choice. She could have chosen to free everyone from the abominable storm instead she chose herself above everyone else. Just as fast as Betsy's words left her mouth the small bunny disappeared into blue smoke leaving her, with her last wish.
